I plan to load the termi's with lucius in the land raider. But since I am capable of killing death guard what other stuff are considered ok against opponents like this. Also are dreadnoughts still allowed with sonic blastmasters for emperors children 8th edition?

Somewhere in the bloody warp

Greetings Dantehilator17 - a fellow convert from the red to the purple!

I made the change back in early 6th edition, and I've had a fair bit of experience running Emperor's Children in 8th edition, so I'll do my best to give you a few pointers and helpful steers as to what works.

First the winged daemon prince is 183 points with that loadout - don't forget you pay for the extra malefic talon and the warpbolter. You'll probably want two of these just for the sheer awesomeness they can bring. Give one the Intoxicating Elixir relic and Diabolic Strength psychic power for shenanigans.

As to general army build, and what units you might want to focus on, noise marines can be pretty good, but I find only if they're equipped with the ranged weapons. I've never had much success with them tooled up for CC, but YMMV.
One way to run them is min-sized squads with one blastmaster in each, to give you objective-camping units that can chuck out a decent amount of firepower. Still undecided about sonic blasters. They can be good, but equally so can chosen with combi-bolters - and they get more shots with a cheaper price tag. Then again, sonic blasters ignore cover and you get to shoot if you die, so it's probably much of a muchness.
If you do want to run noise marines, I'd recommend one large squad all tooled up with sonic blasters - to take full advantage of Endless Cacophony to clear out screens, and then maybe a number of smaller min-sized squads with blastmasters. Back up the big blob with a chaos lord and sorcerer with prescience, so they'll still be scarily accurate even if the blob advances (which it might have to considering the guns are only 24").

Helbrutes can indeed take blastmasters - there's an FAQ in Imperial Armour: Chaos that allows the helbrute to replace its main gun with TWO blastmasters. If you then swap out the other arm for a missile launcher these sonic helbrutes can put out a lot of anti-vehicle fire, and they make great targets for Fire Frenzy to shoot twice - so long as the closest enemy unit is what you actually want to be shooting! The only downside is that they're not so hot against AM, because Leman Russ battle tanks laugh at your S8 weaponry. I find if you're regularly going up against Guard, it never hurts to have a squad of lascannon havocs lurking around your backlines.

Terminators with combi-plasma can also be pretty tasty if you drop them down with a termi-lord for them re-rolls on overcharged plasma. I wouldn't bother with the land raider - just deep strike them in. The LR is far too much of a points-sink. Equally, I'm still not sold on Lucius. I've never found him all that useful in my games, and my regular opponent is a tyranids player so Lucius is usually dogmeat if he gets caught up in CC with an enemy character.

For close combat I'd always look to bring in some daemonic allies - daemonettes and seekers preferably along with heralds. If you can fit them into their own detachment then you'll get more CP and access to Daemon stratagems - most importantly Denizens of the Warp, which allows you to deepstrike in your daemonettes.

Hope this rambling post was helpful in some way!

I've been for the most part playing pure Emperor's Children for the duration of 8th Edition. Well, when I actually get around to play that is. I have a couple of thoughts.

Emperor's Children are a solid army that have a good foundation. They have a decent mixture of shooting and melee and can pivot between roles effectively. Your strongest ability is the Endless Cacophony Strategem, which can do shocking amounts of damage when stacked with prescience or veterans of the long war on a large squad of Noise Marines or Obliterators coming in from Reserve.

If you play with Forgeworld/ Imperial armor that opens some options for you as well. The Sonic Weapon variant for the Helbrute is on an Imperial Armor FAQ. The FAQ rules in the best way possible, since it merely adds options to the Helbrute chasis... which means that unlike other Chaos Dread variants, you can use Fire Frenzy with a Sonic Brute. I also like the Dread Claw, as it is a decent tarpit especially after it got its price reduced to something manageable.

Sonic Weapon armed Helbrutes are pretty solid, you can run them cheaply as pure shooters, or you can give them a mixed load out. I've had good luck with expensive Helbrutes. The important thing to remember is that they are fragile. Only 8 wounds and no invulnerable save means they crumble fast. Delightful Agonies for a 5+ FnP can help and target saturation can help a lot as well. I have had a lot of luck taking heat off Helbrutes with a Defiler. They Defiler has a good pile of wounds, hits really hard in close combat, and can be very durable with Delightful Agonies cast on it. The Defiler has also enjoyed recent price reductions making it very cheap to throw at the enemy (with Warptime) and draw attention away from the more fragile Blast Master armed brutes.

The biggest problem you will have is that any army trying to play a pure legion is going to have. You will not be able to keep up with Soup, and your army will fall further and further behind the power curve. Its been a sad journey for me. I used to take pride in my pure Emperor's Children Warband, but I have noticed the competitive community leaving me further and further behind. Soup is king, and will always be king until GW does something drastic like rubberband everybody into single faction or change how allied detachments work. As it stands, mix matched chaos armies are getting rapidly better at a rate any pure legion list cannot keep up with. Thousand Sons Supreme Command for super princes, Red Corsairs for command point generation, etc.

That said, at the end of the day, you can build a pretty strong EC list for casual games, and there are a lot of armies that have it worse than you, even within the Chaos Umbrella. If your community allows you to build interesting and unique armies and you aren't sucked into a soup arms race death spiral, there is a lot of potential in the EC.

Ooh la la.

Sort of echoing the previous, I'd look into some Daemons. A Battalion of two Heralds and 30 Daemonettes will only run you 300pts.

You know, if there's one thing I've learnt from being in the Army, it's never ignore a pooh-pooh. I knew a Major who got pooh-poohed, made the mistake of ignoring the pooh-pooh. He pooh-poohed it! Fatal error! 'Cause it turned out all along that the soldier who pooh-poohed him had been pooh-poohing a lot of other officers who pooh-poohed their pooh-poohs. In the end, we had to disband the regiment.

Allying in some fiends can also play dividends as you can use them to tie down (heh) your opponent's pesky ordnance (so long as they don't fly). I haven't yet looked into the new slaanesh daemons stuff but I gather the Contorted Epitome is quite good - so if you are flirting with the idea of some daemonic allies I'd say go for it!
