Hey all so I am thinking about getting into flames of war as I want to try to get my dad into the whole table top gaming thing and I am a little confused on where to start. What is with like team yankee or late war or early war? Thanks for any help.

Team Yankee is a different game that uses very similar rules.

Flames of War itself is divided into four segments - Early War, Mid War, Late War, and Pacific. The periods use different points scales. So a T-34/76 in Early War costs a very large amount of points. A T-34/76 in Late War costs very few points. The reason for this is that infantry doesn't change much. It's just as hard to kill infantry in Early War as it is in Late War. But tanks and anti-tank equipment change quite a bit. The different eras allow the game to keep the infantry stuff and the tank stuff more or less at appropriate ratios across different time periods.

The two Pacific books (one for the IJA, and the other for the US Marines) have point costs that roughly correspond with both Early War and Late War.

A brand new Late War starter box was apparently just released with the roll-out of the new Fortress Europe book. It features a small US tank company backed up by US paratroopers against German panzergrenadiers supported by Panzer IV tanks. It includes a mini-rulebook, and a V1 terrain piece (that's exclusive to the box). You might want to check it out if you're interested in getting into the game.

The new box set looks like fantastic value for about 30 odd quid here in the uk. Am going to pick it up myself to get back in to fow.
The Sherman’s will boost my American armoured group immensely.

Plus there’s more plastic coming on the horizon.

Myrtle Creek, OR

Is there one starter box with two forces or are there just the four individual army starters (German, USSR, USA, British)?

Never mind. Looks like It's called Hit the Beach (US v. Germans) and it's sold out at Miniature Market.

FoW is a pretty large game system.
it covers ww1(great war), ww2(early,mid,late) vietnam conflict, arab-israeli conflict(6 day war and october war) and the fictional team yankee(cold war gone hot).
ww1 and ww2 stand on their own, the others are cross system games using the latest rules. (aka nam can play against nam for historical gaming, or against team yankee for fictional gaming should one want to)

there is allso a skirmish version called Tanks by Gale Force 9. it is tank on tank only and is played with 1-4 tanks per player.
it comes in 2 versions, ww2 and modern age(based on team yankee)

so with sutch a large selection, im shure you and your dad can find something that intrests you both.

Erm...

"Team Yankee" is the name of the 1985 World War 3 setting. It's also the blanket name for the post-World War 2 rules system. There are essentially two nearly identical rules systems - Flames of War, and Team Yankee. Fate of a Nation (Arab-Israeli Wars) and 'Nam (Vietnam War) both fall under the "Team Yankee" rules system, and are essentially the equivalent of "Early War" for Team Yankee. The points lists for 'Nam and Fate of a Nation are equivalent, and the lists for both books are usable against each other (though whether they're balanced against each other is another matter entirely; 'Nam's lists are based around an insurgency campaign, while Fate of a Nation is about a conventional war). The lists for the 1985 World War 3 setting are the equivalent of "Mid-War".

Yes, this does mean that there's a good chance that some time in the future, we'll get "Late War" lists for Team Yankee that are set in the '90s or even later.

But if you're familiar with the Flames of War rules, then you know over 90 percent of the Team Yankee rules, and vice versa.

Easiest place to start is just get "Hit the Beach" it has a rulebook 2 forces from WWII Late war, cards, dice, etc. Basically it's a game in a box.

If you want to branch out and go to events, and such I would say either mid-war, or Late-war flames of war or Team Yankee.

I'm a WWII fan so I prefer mid war and late war. I play Team Yankee as do some of my friends. I have 1 force and that is probably all I have. The period doesn't personally interest me, but it is very popular with numerous events popping up here and there.
