Caught this the other day.

There is a trailer for it here. You might not want to watch the trailer since I think it shows maybe a little too much, but here it is anyway.

Like all Netflix originals, this was pretty not great, but pretty watchable. The acting was OK. The effects were serviceable. The story was... interesting. If you like stories about the intersection of post-apocalyptic and robot overlords, you could do worse than to give it a watch.

My personal rankings of how good it was in terms of a sampling of Netflix Originals:

Polar <--- pretty good
The Highwaymen
What Happened To Monday
Hold The Dark
The Bird Box
Siege of Jadotville
Outlaw King
Bright <----- I Am Mother is right around here somewhere
The Cloverfield Paradox
Triple Frontier
War Machine
Extinction
The Silence <--- pure garbage

Rose Byrne was the voice of the robot, which was a nice touch for me since I love Rose Byrne.

In all, a enjoyable, totally forgettable flick.

It’s out? Sweet. Saw the trailer a week ago or so and thought it looked pretty good

I just finished it.

Thought it was a decent flick, if a little predictable. I think I’m so jaded by dystopian and AI movie tropes that nothing really surprises me in these types of movies anymore.

Ouze, have you seen that new Netflix movie about the kids at the Top of the World camp (or something like that) during an alien invasion? It looked to fit in tone with Goonies or Monster Squad. I'd love to hear what you (or anyone) thought of it before I watch it.

I just watched I am Mother.

I thought it was pretty good. Not great. I liked that the robot/s were doing what they were doing with the motivations they had.

I saw Top of the World Camp one too.

It's less great. It's VERY much a kids movie. Sort of a Netflix Spy Kids kind of thing. It like an episode of Are You Afraid of the Dark turned into a movie (except in my nostalgia AYAotD is still awesome though it probably actually isn't). Some of the kids characters are just terrible with gak dialog (the kids act well with what they are given). There is a scene with an atrocious amount of Adidas product placement. The Alien monsters are cool but the CGI budget aint great. It all centers around a macguffin that they need to get to a place.

These are my opinions. This is how I feel. Others may feel differently. This needs to be stated for some reason.

Top of the World feels like a kids movie, except it’s fairly graphic with the character deaths. Like at best it’s a teens movie I think. We found it entertaining for its cliche-ness. Not like bad, just kind of dumb, but in that it felt like it was being dumb on purpose.

Wait, you rank Polar that high? I could not stand Mads Mikelson in that movie.

The plot behind Mother and watching the opening scenes here makes me want to play Horizon Zero Dawn again.

And done. Quite liked it. To me it wasn’t entirely predictable, and I usually see where movies are going. I could have seen it going several ways. Kind of the I know that you know that I know direction of plot twists so you’re not sure which to believe. And then some bonus cute revelations there at the end that were like Ah, nice.

Yeah, super biased, but my wife and I love Mads Mikkelson and that is probably the only thing that pushed it above The Highwaymen - which on the merits is, I think, the best Netflix original.

Not yet but it's on my list. I have heard it's very good but can't provide firsthand experience.

I know exactly what you mean. When you compare this movie with Extinction, for example, it feels a bit like cinema Taco Bell - "what new way can we combine our 5 ingredients?". Unfortunately I like Taco Bell, both literally and metaphorically, so even though I know some of these movies are sort of mailing it in, I watch them anyway. Bob, I hope you are still reading, because I am probably a terrible person to take movie advice from - I like a lot of mediocre movies.

Ouze, my taste in movies is all over the place. Whether or not it matches yours on each movie, your reviews usually give an insight into why you did or did not like a movie that helps give me a sense of what to expect.

I usually get something worthwhile out of the reviews that have more to them than just "well, that was garbage" or "paid critics hate brilliance".

Saw it, ok overall... I really dug the subject matter and the overall look of it was nice, effects were good but didn't push the envelope. Feels a lot like Moon in its style but unfortunately closer in substance to Nightflyers or the new Lost in Space.

Reminded me of watching Canadian TV Sci-Fi films on Space on a lazy Saturday afternoon when I was a kid.

Ending spoilers:
Spoiler:
That twist at the end though worked like a charm on me. The moment she turns and sees the robot holding the shipping crate door open I was like "OH!"

Yea it was an ok watch.
CGI/production values were decent enough and the acting was alright - Mothers voice was very cool.
Definitely too drawn out however, they could easily have shaved 30 mins off it and it needed to build more tension into some of the scenes.
An ok lazy Sunday before work watch imo.

That's was a great movie !
At the end I thought it was a classic dumb one but in fact, another plot twist and this is when it takes all its sense.
Especially after a bit of research as I do with every movie, because I don't know everything and can't understand everything, and it's even better. The small casting, the questions, the analysis, the moral values and everything...
Wow what a great surprise !

Watched it last night. Underwhelming and extremely predictable.

There was a time in the movie when k thought it was classic and underwhelming, when she comes back to the vault with the axe and we learn Mother is a bad AI who killed mankind. But in fact there are two plot twists and everything became instantly fresh and interesting again, IMO

Watched the trailer before I saw this thread. Giving the story away like that is definitely very annoying and now I don't really want to spend my time watching it.

Aye was a bonkers piece of marketing tbh.
