Many of us made Hobby Resolutions or Goals for 2019. It is now July. The year is half over, so how are you doing on your goals?

Me?

I was very ambitious this year after being very conservative the last couple years due to life circumstances. This year, I expected to have more hobby time, and I have had it. However, my goals were also much more aggressive. This years goals are probably more like a 3-5 year plan!

Despite that, I have painted over 100+ models for the year, and was pretty close to have a lead pile of 0! I only survived as I found one model undercoated and not fully painted before Operation: Unpainted Stuff unloaded at my door. A close call.

Dystopian Wars for Aeronautica Imperialis

Sons of Spartacus for Broken Legions

I have even managed to play about 8+ games this year from a variety of different systems. That is always a plus! I hope the second half of my year will be just as productive!

Blucher

Men of Bronze

If you want the details, you can choose to read up on it at the blog: https://bloodandspectacles.blogspot.com/2019/07/random-july-half-way-mark-for-2019-is.html

But enough about me, I want to see what you have done this year!

My resolution was simple

"Own less boxes of unbuilt models in 1 year than I began the year with"

and I was off to a fantastic start until Skaven got published.......Then Slaanesh hit as well.......

I've built a fair bit but also still got a growing backlog, though things are easing off a bit. The real backlog at present is that I need to push forward with some painting esp since all my core armies have several "paint before final assembly" models which means that they sit there half- built until I can sort out the painting.

I've painted a full blackstone fortress set, and played it!

I started painting epic elder, since some locals were talking about getting into it, and got maybe 1500pts ready.

Did a few small projects, like two guild ball teams for a buddy.

Really did some good work on my IG, with 17 vehicles and 9 bullgryn done so far.

I made the mistake(?) of going all in on Crucible Guard that sidetracked a bunch of my resolutions but has been a blast. I've still managed to get a number of my primary factions for a bunch of game systems complete (Batman, Malifaux, Infinity), but it mostly delayed getting into Monsterpocalypse.

I had hoped to have my Sylvaneth done by the end of June, but that was also assuming I'd have the book and stuff by now. Decided I'd just go for it and paint what I had though and contrasts have me through a good chunk of it so far.

I didn’t set any goals, but i’ve been keeping up with my painting this year. I think I was painting more than I was buying almost every month, and slowly whittling down the pile of shame. But i’ve just ordered 3 of the bloody Apocalypse army boxes, so that’scput a spanner in the works.

I didn't make any resolutions but this seems like a good idea. I got the necromunda game back in 2017 and got burnt out trying to get it all painted may drop back and get it finished. all though i have started an imperial guard army though recently to get me back into gear with painting I'm enjoying all the drab right now lol.

My resolutions:

1) Do not buy any new models, but if I do, I want to paint more than I buy. This has not happened at all
2) The eBay pile I want to reduce, if not eliminate by the end of the year. This is slowly reducing
3) I want to try more historical scale modelling, meaning aircraft and tanks mainly, with the potential for making some dioramas. This also hasn't happened!
4) I want to finish off my Craftworld army. No army is ever truly finished, but I want to try my hand at something non-Eldar. Considering I've started buying models for an Exodite army, does that count as finishing my Craftworlds?
5) Learn airbrushing! Actually happening, albeit slowly
Misc: More gaming, more fluff writing! Moving along nicely, plenty of gaming and some fluff writing

The major ones have gone straight out the window as you can see.
I have managed to complete 32 models this year so far. Not a massive number, but at least it's some progress.

As of right now, I’ve painted 96 miniatures this year - up a little on 2018.

The Year to Date shelf:

I try to keep a 1-a-week goal. So 52 models a year. I can normally do better than that, hitting 60-70. At 21 right now, so a bit behind. I do have a pair of intercessors on the bench that are close to done, so that helps.

My full list:

Here are my New Year’s resolutions:
1 Finish painting the odds and ends from my friend's SOB army that I worked on. Just a handfull of arcoflagelents, spare immolater weapons, some IG HQs.
2 Paint more than I buy. 21/8
3 Paint At least 12 spare bits. I've magetized a number of things, painted the primary set up, but never get around to doing the other options. 2/12
4 Try to get more games in. Optimally 24, with at least some being AoS.
5 Update my blog at least once a week, and maintain a consistent pace of work (1 mini a week).
6 Get my Deathwatch army to a larger level, 2 more full squads minimum, aiming to field an allied battalion (2HQ, 3Troops) and 1,000 points. 2 units, 239 points added, technically can field a battalion
7 Enter and finish an entry every month for the painting challenge. If the monthly challenge stops, enter at least one comp in the year. In addition, paint something odd from the back of the bench a/o try out a new technique.
8 Buy, build, and/or paint at least one piece of terrain.

While volume is down, I am hitting a number of my other points. Actual progress on point 1, which has been a solid “nope” for years now. Kept the purchases down, so the pile of shame is shrinking. Not as many games as I’d like, need to work on that more.

I didn't set any specific resolutions this year, but I figure it'd be fun to chime in with a "year on" update from this time last year

I intended to learn and play Bolt Action, my army sits in its case unpainted (but built at least, so as a goal I can still easily reach it). I did go back and play a few games, but this is still a stillborn goal. Nothing has been painted and I've rarely played.
I also intended to start playing The Other Side by Wyrd. Kickstarter has shipped, so my models are on the way, and I know the game rules well enough to get started (I'll take that as complete so far). This arrived. Immediately got put on bases, I read the rulebook cover to cover, played a few games and then it died. Haven't played since December last year with no games on the horizon, and nothing is painted.
Batman Miniatures, I fully painted everything I own, so that's another achievement ticked off. Well this one isn't half bad. I'm still not far from fully painted, but I need to get into gear and finish a lot
Terrain I intended to paint my Batman board, it's not even fully built (but I have another board 100% done at least). This still hasn't happened, but my group has enough tables anyway so not a huge deal. Would be nice to get it done, but not a high priority.
Malifaux I've gotten games in, painted a bit, every master I own now is painted so it's down to random other picks (about halfway through the backlog, so I'll take it as done) Well, 3rd edition happened, and with it 2 new Masters. Both of those aren't painted, but I have gotten more done in the year since. A lot of half done abandoned projects though
This Is Not A Test and Blood Bowl both blindsided me a bit, but I have a fully painted warband for TNT (not that I've ever played) and am currently painting my Blood Bowl team for my league Both of these games are now not played, and This Is Not A Test never got off the ground for a variety of reasons. They are both almost all painted though (Blood Bowl just needs a couple models finished)

So to set some resolutions for the closing end of the year, we'll see how I go
First off, finish the Bat-Log. Not far to go (about 20 odd models), just need to get it done.
Start working through Malifaux to get it done, working by keyword. Finish my favourite thematic crews and the generic options first, then move into the more unpainted stuff.
Crack into Kill Team. Should be quick projects, but I have a couple teams planned.

DC:90S++G+++MB+IPvsf17#++D++A+++/mWD409R+++T(Ot)DM+

I mainly play 30k, but am still fairly active with 40k. I play Warcry, Arena Rex, Middle-Earth, Blood Bowl, Batman, Star Wars Legion as well

A Protoss colony world

Okay, I'll go ahead and post my halfway progress too (no pics though):
First, here were my goals that I outlined in my P&M blog:
1) Get better at playing Warhammer 40k. I want to win a tournament this year if possible. I won't be totally destroyed if it doesn't happen as our local meta is very tough, but I'm hoping to improve my play.
2) Reduce the pile of shame, as in paint more than I buy. Due to RL stuff happening, this should be easy, as I won't be buying as much plastic crack (my money is needed elsewhere).
3) Get the bits boxes done. I'm already benefitting from what I've done so far, so now I just need to finish them so I don't have to fish through so many boxes and sprues to find bits I need.
4) Paint everything from Blackstone Fortress. I probably won't play it until I do so.
5) Improve my freehand painting. It's coming along nicely already, but I want to get even better.
6) Paint some non-GW models. I've got a few around, including Infinity, Star Saga, Guildball, and others, and they need some love. Plus it'll be nice to paint stuff that isn't Warhammer related too.
7) Finish up a bunch of partially painted models. I've got a bunch of Death Guard stuff, some Dark Angels, and even some Tau in this category. I really need to go ahead and finish them.
8) Play some non-Warhammer 40k games. I've got stuff from some other systems as mentioned in goal 6 above, so I want to use it. It'll make a nice refreshing change from battles in the grimdark future.

Here's how I've done so far:
1) Not much to show here. Thanks to RL problems I haven't gotten in nearly enough games, tournament or otherwise, so I feel like I haven't improved my play at all. If anything, I'm not sure I haven't regressed, as I've caught myself making some pretty noobish mistakes.
2) Unfortunately, I've still found enough money to inflate the pile of shame even bigger. Mainly because I bought enough Guard stuff to run the Loyal 32, among other things. 24 models painted for the year, but I've bought at least 50 I think (Shadowspear didn't help either).
3) Haven't touched my bits boxes yet this year.
4) I've painted 11/44 models from the set. Not doing so hot.
5) Hard to quantify this goal, but I'm actually fairly happy with how my Blood Ravens Space Marine Heroes turned out, as far as the freehanding, so I guess I'm making progress.
6) Haven't touched anything non-GW yet this year.
7) Haven't had time to get around to finishing the partly painted things either.
8) This one may end up being a bust. If I get the rest of Blackstone Fortress painted, I know some people who would probably play it with me, so that would technically count.

I need to step up my game and stop hiding behind RL problems. I also need to throttle my electronic crack way down, as games like Warframe, SMITE, RuneScape and others have been devouring a lot of my free time.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000
Check out my P&M Blogs: ZergSmasher's P&M Blog | Imperial Knights blog | Board Games blog | Total models painted in 2023: 40 | Total models painted in 2024: 7 | Current main painting project: Dark Angels

My resolution was quite simple - and I have held to it.

Do not let young Brigid Danger O'Grump eat any of the miniatures.

The Auld Grump - we have minis (homemade Weebles) ready for her third birthday.

Kilkrazy wrote:When I was a young boy all my wargames were narratively based because I played with my toy soldiers and vehicles without the use of any rules.

The reason I bought rules and became a real wargamer was because I wanted a properly thought out structure to govern the action instead of just making things up as I went along.

Ok so I figured I'd break my failing back-long into section and see how it looks:

Tyranids - not bought any this year and I've finished 3 zoanthropes and have a mawlock and trygon part way to being finished. Overall achieving!
Skaven - failing utterly as lots was bought and nothing really finished at all
Daughters of Khaine - actually succeeding mostly. I've got cauldrons and a bloodwrack to build, but those are part waiting on painting so don't yet count. That said they are at the point where I'm basically there with building and am onto the needing a lick of paint
Slaanesh - succeeding! Despite much being bought I've kept up with the backlog of them, in fact I've even done better as I found 3 chariots from years back that I bought and never built and got them built up.
Warcry - failing but only on account that GW hasn't actually shipped them to me yet!

So overall, and esp if I ignore the rats, I'm doing pretty well with keeping up in general. Though that said this is only a building list; painting is still the big objective of the year that is getting painfully slower at advancing.
