Had a look at this web page and I like the idea of small scale quick battles , reminds me of when i played back in 3rd edition at school, we used to run 500pts to make the games run quick. I preferred those game in the end cause the games would flow quickly.

Thing is, Grim Dark Future can run larger games pretty quickly, too. I know the points don't equate from GDF to 40k but playing similar sized forces to what we play in 40k, we've gotten done in a little over half the time.

Just an observation...and we tend to prefer smaller games any way.

Grimdark really does a good job of running games of less than a dozen models with Skirmish, and full armyscale games where each side has the equivalent of 2-3k points (if using GW rules).

The Fantasy system is subtly different, but works great, too.

I'm from the future. The future of space

There are some battle reports on youtube and the game doesn't seem to given any worse of a gaming experience than the expensive warhammer rules from GW. I know I've enjoyed playing them too.

Balance in pick up games? Two people, each with their own goals for the game, design half a board game on their own without knowing the layout of the board and hope it all works out. Good luck with that. The faster you can find like minded individuals who want the same things from the game as you, the better.

I have been looking into this system myself, from what I read in the free rules, it looks to be a pretty solid system that keeps both players meaningfully involved in the game.

One Page Rules are very good. Simple, elegant, while retaining a lot of tactical depth. Alternative activation means that no player has to wait that long before they are able to get stuck into the action.

I haven't had chance yet to play their fantasy version (Age of Fantasy I think it is called), however it reads very well and follows the same design philosophy of Grimdark Future.

The objective of the game is to win. The point of the game is to have fun. The two should never be confused.

One Page Rules are my go-to nowadays for getting people to game who don't want to go down the rabbit hole of 40k or AoS.

The skirmish versions of Grimdark future and Age of Fantasy also have some really nice fast and easy campaign rules, too. I think the random occurrences are dumb, but I like the rules for gaining skills, injuries, and experience.

It's also worth doing a Patreon pledge, even for a single month, to get the full rules (more art, optional advanced rules and missions) and the Unit construction rules.

I also recommend the following games if you are looking for quick and dirty 40K themed skirmish games.

Rampant Stars/Rampant Sun/Rampant Galaxies
Star Breach
Heralds of Ruin Killteam (?)
Rogue Planet
Starport Scum
Fistful of Lead
Blasters and Bulkheads
