After Top Gun, Tom Cruise became a big aviation nut, pilot, etc. So it's cool to see them using a two-seat F-18 to mimic him being there. Heck they could even have him actually flying an old F-18. The music hit me in the feels (this was "the" movie I grew up with as the son of a Naval Aviator - and subsequent Top Gun candidate ---- spoiler alert, there isn't an actual trophy...)

Ed Harris is always a plus.

I'm glad they opted for normal aircraft and not F-35s or some CGI mega-garbage fake planes (excluding the little "atmospheric suit" kind of thing he's wearing...so possibly drones? or near-space work?). The last parting shot of the F-14 is a bit of a mystery.

Even today f-18s are the most common carrier aircraft. Makes sense.

I am really excited. Top gun is one of my favorite movies. Not concerned about SJW nonsense. Top cruise is in it. It will be about him and only him. That is basically in his contract.

I have enough of a soft spot for the original to give this one a shot.

Is this still supposed to be a "Maverick teaches the noobs" movie? That's what I remember being pitched as so-so years ago. This trailer and subtitle make it really unclear what this movie is supposed to be about.

I'm not really interested in another vanity project from the aging action star who desperately wishes everyone would remember how great he used to be. Sylvester Stallone had the decency to appeal to my nostalgia Tom. He didn't just blindly ask everyone the question while giving nothing in return

The original was basically a US Navy advert and only got made on the approval of the US Navy. Not to mention it was a cheese filled sausage fest. The only good thing about it was the F-14s. Given the plot of the new one (Maverick teaches Goose's son how to be an aviator like his father - according to wikipedia), I don't hold much hope for this one either.

Ooh, sorry, I forgot to press my over-enthusiastic sheep button...

Yeaaah!! Woooo! Top Gun 2!!! Wooo! Wooo! Wooo! Wanna see that!! Gonna go see it a million times!!!

I like Tom Cruise lately in the smaller-name movies he does. Oblivion and Edge of Tomorrow were great scifi movies.

Trailer left me kinda cold/ kinda meh. I'm not so sure there is a story here worth telling.

What? It's a perfect metaphor for the sputtering of Tom Cruise's once promising acting career and how we were all wrong to ignore him all those years he was flying rodent gak crazy and snub him at all the award shows, relegating such a talented individual to the grunt work of vanilla action flicks and wow this makes way to much sense in the context of this trailer it's kind of disturbing actually I'ma stop now.

Judging by some of the other flying cast seen, and his pseudo-space suit, my SWAG would be that there's a bit of a "training newbs" bit as well as a "training to be an Aster-knot" thing going on.

Did have a bit of a laugh at them saying he's been in for 20 years, and only made Captain. . . I mean, granted my IRL experience was in the (much better) army, but that experience tells me that it takes about that much time to make Captain/Colonel for most people.

Definitely got a few nostalgic feels from that trailer

My hope however is that
A. its not a CGI fest (a couple of those flying scenes looked very suspicious to me)
B. they keep the feel of the first / pay homage to it
C. theres a credible enemy/plot. I read early rumours that its about fighting AI drones or something albeit that trailer shows none of that.

still think lovely wifey 3 is partly to blame, early 2000's he's settling into a more acting less running groove then up rocks Katie and he's gotta prove he's still got it and back we go to excessive splodes and wotnot

still fsr more excited than I should be about this film mind

He said 30+ years (original Top Gun came out in 1986 and Maverick was Lieutenant there). Advancing 3 ranks in 30+ years, especially with so many merits, is really slow progress. In fact in real life he probably would have been forced to retire. And why is that 85 year old Admiral still in active service?!

Any way, flying looks quite good there. Much better than usual Hollywood TIE fighter CGI crapfests.

WRT "A," TC apparently said that they did everything you see for real when introducing the trailer, so there might be some post processing or clever camera tech happening, but the footage is genuine.

After watching it again, I'm thinking the biggest downfall will be no real enemies. I do think it could end up being "go shoot down a rogue satellite with this high tech spacey ship" or "go fight this out of control drone", or simply "go prove human pilots are still as good as drones". Now perhaps they'll add a little twist that it's a rogue Chinese or Russian drone and they've asked for our help...but I don't think we'll be seeing an actual enemy nation which'll take some of the fun out of it.

PS: I think Iron Eagle will be next...come on Chappy...

Terrorists.

The original "enemies" were Slider, Ice Man and authority though, the russians were largely just a plot device. Just drop in some sub plot about how the terrorists have some sort of Maguffin that means that blasting them out of the sky from the comfort of the Whitehouse's cellar isn't viable, perhaps even with the added aspect that it also means that it requires some sort of "old fashioned" technique that only Maverick is uniquely placed to teach/execute because he's the only one still flying that can remember before the internet, and bob is your uncle, finale.

It's likely all real footage of actual f18's. That would keep it in line with the original. No CGI in that one.

We see Mav in some sort of space suit....I assume the plot will be something like Mav is selected to fly some sort of new aircraft to pull of some kind of incredible mission. Honestly...Sounds incredible.

It's a teaser which means majority of the movie is completely unfinished, I'm not going to draw too many conclusions about the plot or whatnot. I am big fan of cool fighter jet action so I remain ever hopeful.

I was never in, but my understanding was that if you got passed over for promotion twice you were "kindly" asked to retire.

Can anyone confirm that? Realistically, I don't think it's possible to be a combat fighter pilot for 30 years but I was never in the airforce/navy so I could be totally wrong. And it's an action movie so who cares about realism anyway XD

Sadly, I know too much about military promotion boards to suspend disbelief. Someone that far behind the curve is beached and heavily encouraged to get out and make room for someone up-and-coming.

ESPECIALLY if he violates flight safety rules like flying WAY below specified minimum altitude limits.

Again, my time was army, so grains of salt and all that. . . In regards to being passed over, I do know things are different for officer side from enlisted side, and as for whether you're "forced" (suggested, politely asked. . .however you want to word it) out or not would greatly depend on the era of service, the nature of your professional evaluations and that sort of thing. . . . I've heard some stories (though cannot personally confirm) of some officers who were pilots that, when being notified of a promotion that would take them out of the pilot's chair, they opted to "step down" to the Warrant Officer ranks in order to keep flying. . . I've not heard of someone wearing a bird rank who has maintained flight status since, I dunno, maybe Vietnam? In the more modern military birds and stars "ought" to be commanding large groups of people and things, not flying about like school boys.

Anyhow. . . yeah, I'd rather just kick the tires and light the fires for a couple hours and have fun

My knowledge is a little out of date, but in my father's (Army) career ended in mandatory retirement because he didn't hit the milestones to keep going. He held out for a specific posting after his battalion command (and his war college stint), so never held a brigade command as a Colonel, which made promotion to General effectively impossible. So after a few desk jobs, at 28 years, retirement was mandatory. Part of it was simply that he was bad at politics (which is fairly necessary at the Colonel/General divide) but mostly he passed over postings he should have taken, because he was waiting on a position a former commander 'promised' him, which ended up not happening.

'Passed over' for promotion is, AFAIK, a big red flag, even once. Your career is basically done and you're filling shoes that need your current rank, but would be wasted on anyone who still has prospects.
Here's an Air Force related link if you're curious:

If we're being picky...at least since 9/11 the US military has been desperately short of combat pilots almost consistently. (Same has occurred in the past ten years with almost every special forces branch). So even if they don't like you, you'd probably be sticking around to fill a seat.
