Hi Dakkians

With like one exception, I don't really regret buying anything for my army as everything is going to be utilised and make battlefield sooner or later.
But I do regret not getting hold of some things when I could.

So the questions for the thread are:

What model purchases you regret or are angry about not making enough research about?

What purchases you regret not going for ?

For me the only real regret is buying the Eldar ranger Amalyin Shadowguide from blackstone fortress on ebay... I did not realise she is out of scale of 40k Eldar and because she has a 40k data sheet I assumed she'd make a great ranger/Illic Nightspear proxy. But no cigar... Only like £8-9 down purely to not taking time to research, but still.. Regret is there!

For me the current biggest regret is not getting the Corsair kit when it was available from FW. I see them come up briefly on e-bay every now and then. Sadly many are likely incomplete and are priced like gold dust.

I regret buying a lot of Perry and Warlord historical kits I had planned to convert into sci fi troops.

I regret not buying the Tomb Kings necroknights (? the giant snakes, not the guys riding giant snakes).

At one time, I regretted not buying more drop pods... now I have one that sees no play at all.

In some ways, I regret having (re)started Blood Angels / Red Marines at all. And in others, I know everyone that has multiple armies winds up with Power Armour at some point. So the "regret" is tempered with knowing I would have had some kind of power armour in my arsenal.

I mildly regret having given up on Dark Eldar when the new wave of models came out. I do miss playing them sometimes.

I also have always wanted to play Tau, but have never taken the plunge. I do like me some Mechas. Maybe a Crisis suit focused Kill Team is in my future.

Regrets that I bought:
Pretty much everything for my stillborn Dark Angels Battle Company. Drop pods, Razorbacks, Tacticals, Assault Marines, and more, and I never even ended up getting to play the list. None of that stuff is any good in 8th edition, so it was ultimately all wasted and is now just gathering dust.
CSM Possessed. Never were any good really, and are definitely on the chopping block for what I'm planning to sell in the near future.
WarmaHordes starters: I acquired 2 different Circle Orboros starter sets, and have never really started playing the game at all. What was I even thinking?

Regrets that I didn't buy:
I let a bunch of old metal Praetorian Imperial Guard slip through my fingers on eBay. If I hadn't already bought a bunch of Cadian stuff, I would have pounced on those for sure, as I love the look of the Praetorians.
I also wish I'd picked up some of the Made to Order stuff, especially some of the Diaz Daemonettes when they did those.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000

I have a drop pod and a land raider sitting on a shelf, still on the sprues. They were impulse buys picked up really cheaply on Ebay, but wasted money is still wasted money.

I also have a bunch of non-GW models I bought to convert into marauders for my AoS Slaanesh mortals army, since the standard GW marauders are fugly and, more importantly, exclusively male. Now that GW are actually making cool-looking Chaos mortal models, some of which are female, I've no real need for the non-GW ones. The non-GW models I've already converted (examples - potentially NSFW) will continue to be used, but the Godsworn Hunt and Warcry warbands will make a better base for conversions going forward.

I could've got him. I had the opportunity to go into the store and buy him, and by the time I decided I wanted to, the window was closed.

"But what about eBay?"

There are more Centurius minis on eBay than were ever made in real life. It might be the most recast 40K mini in history. I wanted a real one.

I regret starting my Black Templar force. In retrospect, it was a half-assed job and I could have tried a lot harder to make it a good army. It also doesn't help the Black Templar codex was gotten rid of shortly after.

I regret not buying a lot more of the metal cast Eldar aspect warriors that got replaced by finecast. I also wish I'd picked up some of the Autarchs before they got discontinued too, those were gorgeous models and I didn't get them because they didn't have a place in my army at the time.

Regretted buying: That never to be sufficiently damned abortion of a resin Valkyrie from FW. Not only was EVERY PART warped (most on at least 2 axes) - so not just bent, twisted, too, several parts were shattered in transit. NO void fill in the box, just the baggies rattling around in a box from the UK to Oz. Eventually got enough of it fixed to assemble it and then onsell it a few weeks later just to be rid of it. For less than half of what it cost me. I just wanted it gone.

Regretted not getting? Nothing so far. I have to really want something in order to get it to start with (limited funds, my liking of it has to exceed my dislike of spending money on it).

My only not-bought regrets are from times of my break away from hobby and those include metal Aspect Warriors, metal Harlequin troupe (but I did manage to find Troupe Master and Shadowseer from this period on the second hand market in acceptable price range) but most notably Falcon Type II and Wave Serpent Type II upgrade kits from Forge World. Those are near impossible to find nowadays in good shape and price and they do change my personal view of Eldar tanks drastically - from „meh, I don’t want to include tanks” to „must have many of those sleek and beautiful skimmers”. The only way to obtain tail fin nowadays is to buy Warp Hunters and recast (and then modify for Wave Serpents) but it still leaves out the Falcon Type II turret to scratchbuild...

Regretting not getting - Diaz Deamonettes when they went on sale last because darn it the ebay prices are still insane on them and I don't think GW will do them again (though why not baffles me considering how well they sell even at the inflated ebay prices).

Otherwise there's one of two "Miniecrate" models form PP that I regret not getting.

I regret selling my Vampire army. I needed the cash for a move cross-country and had no realistic way of getting the army home safely. The army is in good hands (in a glass display case in a hobby shop owned by a good friend, but I do wish I had my legion of death to pull on for AoS.

I regret selling my Lamenters. I didn't need the cash and the army could have been packed away in storage. I wasn't playing the army at the time and wanted to clear up space, but now that I rarely play anyways, having a beautiful army on display could have been awesome. Nowadays my display is full of lovely singles and one-offs, but I don't have the same will/drive to paint armies to that kind of standard anymore.

I kind of regret not building and keeping a metal aspect Eldar army back in the day? I may still eventually do Eldar for funsies, but the new finecast models are pure garbage and it's the only thing stopping me from doing it.

There have been a few projects where I've bought with the intention of getting into the army/game, but never did. But there's only a handful of them over the past 20 years; everything else has been built with a purpose and either sold (for equal or greater value, back when I could sell a painted army for above MSRP) or still owned, so there's not many regrets there.

Sons of Horus that got halfway; was supposed to be a casual 40k army, but I built it back when I was still a pretty competitive player. Hated it, sold the army (I'd painted a sizeable portion of it too!). Now that I'm full casual 40k, I kind of regret not finishing it.

I built an Eldar serpent spam mech army and played with it for 6 months before ditching it.

I tried getting into Infinity back in 2nd edition and had a 300 ish pt force of Haqqislam. Didn't like it, although I still have the majority of the models lying around somewhere.

I went deep into Nighthaunt when they were first released. Thankfully Legion of Grief is saving my butt, and I'm slowly painting my collection up for use, but there's a few kits (2x Black Coachs, 10 Hexwraiths, 6 Spirit Hosts, 2 Morghasts) that I have zero intention of using because they're garbage. The Black Coaches will make great center pieces but they're unlikely to see play unless i just bring a funsies army to an event I don't care about winning.

I had a horde Ork army for 40k, some 200 models. Played it for a month, absolutely hated it and didn't want to paint it, so I just gave it to a friend who still owns and plays the army (and it's still not fully painted, 10 years later lol).

I would say I have more regret for the things I sold rather than what I haven't bought. I got rid of all my 40K stuff several years ago, really cheap too.

I also don't understand the issue with people's regrets with old marines. They're not that bad on the table, not to the point of trash, unless all you play is competitive. Sure, it might need a narrative approach with your opponent, but I still love playing my Tac, Assault and Dev sqds. In fact, I only have one drop pod right now and I'd like 2 more, and maybe a second rhino. Have a partially built Land Raider I need to finish for my Deathwing, need to get that on the table too.
I don't care what GW does with the Primaris, I'll still bring out the old marines once in a while.

The first kit I ever bought as a young lad was a Dark Eldar jetbike. I played Eldar and thought it was basically the same thing. I was extremely confused and disappointed by the spikes and leather.

I really regret my Chaos Space Marine army. I love Power Armour, I have 3 loyalist marine armies. I split Dark Vengeance with a friend and took the chaos half, supplemented with a Heldrake, a TDA Lord and some Raptors and Warp Talons. They were my wall painting wise. The Cultists and Helbrute and Lords were fun but I could never really get into the rank and file guys.

What made it worse was 6th Ed Supplements. I like making my own fluff for my armies and I liked the Crimson Slaughter paint scheme and name so I went with that, but the supplement killed my enthusiasm for it. Another book to pick up and use somebody else's fluff

EDIT: Also the Blood Raven transfer sheet from Forge World. Those things are finnicky, especially on shoulder pads, so using 3+ per marine to get it right is heartbreaking when you have the last sheet in existance (for my intents and purposes)

Regrets not buying usually come down to missing out on a deal or something like that. Recently bought 2 units of Spites and a unit of Kurnoth Hunters and wished I had just bought another Looncurse when it was available for example.

Regrets buying usually come down to jumping on a deal or something like that. Got a good price on a Convergence army I've never had time to properly use. I'm not really sure what lesson there is to learn there...

Yeah ditto, that! I see corsair kits pop up on eBay every now and then but ohh boy are they expensive and probably incomplete.

Selling off models ive already painted goes without saying

Big regret: My Night Lords. 50 tactical marines made from the old CSM kit, mk3 and mk4 kits. Resin shoulder pads all around, a mix of forgeworld and GW upgrade kits. Several packs of Night Lords heads as well and weapon upgrades. I assembled them, under coated them, then stood them next to my Primaris and put them in a tub never to be seen again. £350 down the drain.

I find that whenever I start painting my Dark Angels, I eventually switch to something else. I got about half the army done and I dread doing the rest.

I've started and stopped building the Ghost Ark 2 times now. It is the most annoying kit I've ever worked with. I have a C'Tan, a T-vault and that ark to finish and I'm done with Necrons for good, so I'll grind those out hopefully this summer.

Biggest regret I never bought:

A Dreamforge Games Leviathan Blockhead. Want a 24-inch tall Warlord titan for $600? I almost jumped on it when first announced, but decided to wait until it was too late and they ceased production after GW cried foul.

Definitely regret not buying things more than buying them.

Regret not buying: more Dreamforge Eisenkern troopers. Now that I have built and started painting what I have. I want 30 more. The plastics are OOP for now and I really don't want resin ones. I regret not buying the second set of metal Space Marine Veterans. Probably my biggest regret was not buying a FW Titan while my wife was deployed lol. Was my best shot and I didn't take it.

Regret purchasing: I have a Storm Raven still in the box with a Chapterhouse extension kit still. I have plans for it but it is always the last on priority list. Maybe I just need to cut it loose.

Also Marine scouts. I was never really a fan of their look and only used my half painted snipers like once in 6th ed. Probably just need to sell those and the regular scouts and their speeder I still have on sprue from the old mega-force.

Oh and maybe my regular speeders for my Silver Skulls. They have sat in the bottom of my carry case for years and only got used a few times. They are only basecoated and just don't fit my style. I like infantry, tanks and dreads.

Now I will never regret painting them, but back in the hay day of 7th I bought models for an Anvil Strikeforce and was going to paint them as White Scars just to push my comfort zone. Well I painted 1 squad of Heavy bolters and one squad of Grav guns and then 8th dropped. Who the he'll wants two squads of White Scar Devastators? They are basically worthless now. I have tried to sell them. They look great but... The two drop pods will get moved to my 30k army and the two assault squads will get built as Silver Skulls now to help me get to a full Company. But those dang beautiful Devastators are just paperwieghts now.
