No more Empire General makes me sad I don't need more than one, but it is a great kit full of wonderful bits from the angel of death banner/statue thing to the clockwork cherub to mammoth swords, hammers and maces.

I'm still confused as to why the gorgeous Dragon Princes of Caledor are going away...but the Cold One Knights are staying? The derptastic Dark Elf Sorceress/Dreadlord on Black Dragon(seriously, look at the Dragon's head options!) is staying but the High Elf equivalent is going?

It's a bit sad to see the Glade Guard go, but I won't mourn them. Not when I've still got 60 of the blighters unassembled because any of the more recent(post-2012) runs of the kit had some mold slippages that made the heads not align properly on the body and the capes wouldn't either.

I think I got one of the last Witch Hunters. Heck, I had one already and got a second. Love the sculpt, and I wanted two. Was going to order today at my GW to give him the sale, but my wife convinced me to order last night from home and I’m glad I did. Woke up this morning to find them now sold out.

My current “free people” stuff includes a General on Griffon (Karl Franz), now two witch hunters, a couple OLD wizards (from Talisman 3rd) and an excelsior priest. And probably a few random dwarf heroes.

Reality is a nice place to visit, but I'd hate to live there.

Because they both serve exactly the same function in the game, and one had to go during the blending process of the soup. And the one with ancient horse cavalry models was the obvious choice.

The same logic applies to most of the squatted models. Dwarf warriors/thunderers don't really fit the aesthetic of the newer, armored dwarf kits and they just double the function of Freeguild guards and gunners.

As for some of the others, I imagine they took a good look at what sells and what doesn't.

Feeling gutted, really glad I bought everything to do my 6th ed HE army back in jan/fed, but now I'll never be able to expand it unless I pay collector's prices. WHFB High Elves and Wood Elves are classic, I wish they'd gotten more updates and was especially hoping they'd update the WE/Wanderers. It's obvious from the newest Underworlds starter that any WE going forward are instead going to be weird Fae amalgamations that GW can fully copyright and the HE if they ever return will be whatever weird angel-elves Teclis is making. HE/WE weren't "unique" enough to be solely under GW's IP

@Cronch - because the the cold one riders are more unique and easier to claim ownership of. It has nothing to do with rules, GW bases the rules around the models (they say so freely when you listen to the official podcasts). What's funny is you say "ancient horse cavalry", but the plastic Dragon Princes/Blades are much newer than the cold one knights. I've built both kits, they're excellent.

This is an exact repeat of the old WHFB problem: the rules make elves nearly impossible to play (they've been split into too many subfactions and kinda suck anyways), so the elf kits aren't selling. The answer is to kill off the poorly selling kits and make new kits for new armies with new rules, new designs that GW can claim full ownership of the rights to in court if somebody makes a copycat version. New units have awesome rules, so they sell well whether or not the new kits are any better.

I hope that they do a last re-run like they did with the first squatting wave. I wanted to order a bif batch of models, but waited for the Cold one knights to be restocked. Now I am scerewed....

I kinda wish they'd just do it like waxing a particularly hairy part of body, just rip the damned thing off already and kill off the kits they plan on killing off. It's like they just want to occasionally remind us how they are killing it.

In a way, I was really happy when they said that with the new book on the horizon, they'd be culling the range but giving notice. It was a given that more sets would disappear, but the notice was incredibly welcome. Should have known it wouldn't work out quite that way.
Though it is strange how things are removed from the range years after AoS started. They decided to get rid of Tomb Kings and Brets immediately, but apparently hadn't fully thought through what to do with the greenskins or free peoples, until now.

There were a lot of minis in that collection on my "someday" list. They have graduated to my list of grievances now. I should thank GW for removing many of the reasons I had to continue following their product lines.

Is this another attempt by GW to rid themselves of any IP they don't have a trademark on?

Seeing as how many factions are stuffed into cities of sigmar, this shouldn't be much of a surprise if they're dropping some old dusty kits.

Yep. Not that it really stops people making alterative sigmarines or ironjaw orruks or deepkins or whatever. If there's demand there will be alternatives for those as well.

It's funny because I'm sitting on a wood elf army and I was toying with whether I should build it for 8th, or AOS. After this, it makes the choice pretty clear. I went ahead and got all the heroes I needed, so I should be set. That gives me 3 WHFB armies, which is enough.

Meh, I can't really call up Hasbro and ask for some 10 year old Transformers so I can't be too upset.

And the nigh infinite world of 3rd party manufacturers and the downright infinite world of 3d printing means that nothing is irreplaceable.

Sure, but it was all a self-reinforcing system that has now collapsed. If I have to buy 3rd party minis, I might as well read some 3rd party fluff books and play some 3rd party games. Before too long I won't have any reason to buy GW minis.

Age of Sigmar is the definition of not fully thought through.

The way they handled the fantasy side of Warhammer from the End Times onward I couldn't bring myself to trust GW on any of the kits not specifically made for Age of Sigmar. There's just too much risk involved of ending up with a half finished army by the time they make up their mind what the damn setting is supposed to look like.

The flying High Elf chariot is a funny one in that regard. I remember how everyone went nuts over how silly and out of place it looked when it was first released. And now we have this vast magical setting where it would slot in just fine, they dump it.

I don't need sympathy. I need suitable models.

But seriously, I've been there. I've extensively converted a full Marine army. 25 models, no Marine left untouched. That took the entire four years 4th ed lasted. As a hobby project cobbling something together is great, but in practical terms if you want to have an army to put on the board, especially in the case of Warhammer where those 25 models I mentioned are the bare minimum you would have expected at the time, with army sizes only going up in the meantime, there's no replacement for base models that get you like 90% to where you need to be. Everything else is simply impractical.

I can also say for myself that this is all made worse by GW's speedy release schedule. I could devote myself to a project like that back in the day when things went a lot more leisurely, and end the end of the day the army made for one codex, started when the codex was released, was done when the next codex was out and changed the rules to invalidate the army. These days I'd probably skip an entire edition with an extensive conversion project.

So yeah, why bother? It's not like it's actually a problem for me. If I want to convert a Marine, I'll convert a Marine. Meanwhile, GW would rather sell me a whole army of them and won't be content with that one model I take two months to finish. It's their loss, really. I would have bought an army of Tomb Kings for Age of Sigmar. I can't, so now I don't even play the game.

Your projects were quite impressive, but definitely beyond my means to acquire. I can sympathize with anyone who starts a project and then finds himself suddenly priced out of (or otherwise hindered from) completing said project.

I can't help but be incapable of feeling bad for people who are upset that they were probably going to buy a model someday, and are now upset it's gone.

If you wanted the model/line, maybe you should have supported it?

I can't really complain that the empire models are going away, when I stopped buying any and all empire models after AoS came out.

1)I imagine a lot of those models were on someone's "someday" list, and so GW saw jack all sales on them in the meantime.
2) No, they're not being squatted due to some mysterious "IP" issues, they're being removed because they're putting a lot of "armies" into one army, so some units that double up have to go. Dwarf warriors/thunderers fill the same niche as Freeguild soldiers, and they don't fit the all-armor aesthetic of the other dwarf infantry, so they were picked to go. Cold ones are seemingly a very popular kit, and fairly unique one compared to just elves on horses, so they got to stay while the horse elves went. Glade Guard were another ranged basic infantry unit, so while shadow warriors stayed, they had to go. and so on. It's just making sure the army book doesn't end up with 15 units all doing the same thing.

but the plastic Dragon Princes/Blades are much newer than the cold one knights

Are they? I've largely checked out after 7th ed launched, and they look very similar to the other bad plastic HE models of the period.
