Hi,

Have been away for a while, recently started reading up the new rules and watching some battle reports etc and had my interest rekindled. Considering starting up the hobby slowly again on the side. I was before the break looking quite a bit at starting up a Horus Heresy Raven Guard army, but wanted to be able to use them in 40k as well, and had been rather unimpressed with the options. Looking again now in 8th edition, I thought it looked a bit more promising, so I figured I'd experiment a bit with creating a list to potentially work towards. Since I have no experience with the new rules and armies though, I figured I'd post it here for a bit of feedback. Not looking to create a tournament-winner, but it would be nice if it could hold its own. Here's the list:

Basically, I strove for a thematic, rather fast, assault force, backed up with some long ranged weaponry. The Fire Raptor mostly there because I love the model and will probably want to use it in Horus Heresy games as well, should I come around to that. Seemed solid enough on paper to fill a role on the battlefield as well. I tried to stick with models usable in Horus Heresy as well (essentially staying away from intercessors, centurions, and similar), but of course I am open to changing that to some degree if it should be necessary.

Any feedback is welcomed! Happy wargaming

My immediate thought is swap out the Techmarine for a Lieutenant to help the Devs. I would also drop the Dreads for a Leviathan, or something else that can help crack open Knights or other T8 units.

I agree with Valkyrie, you will get more milleage out of a Lt than the Techmarine. Personally I would switch the Contemptor for Venerable Dreadnoughts with lascanons and missile launcher. With the point saved you should invest in Thunderhammers in your Vanguard Vets.

Otherwise, nice list. It's been a while since I've seen a Fire Raptor - lets hope it reaps a good tally for you!

Praise the emperor, bless your weapon and pass the ammo!

Thank you for the feedback, both of you! I will find a way to make room for a Lieutenant in place of the Techmarine. Might drop the Relic Swords in the two smaller squads of Jump Pack Vets for it, as they are only there because of left-over points.

As for the Contemptors, I really do prefer the model far over the other Dreads, and really like the idea of two of them marching up towards combat. And so I would like to ask, are they horribly ineffective or can they work? Is there another way to kit them out which would make them more effective? Are other variants of Dreads (e.g. Venerable variants) more efficient, and if so, is the margin in between large? I ask because I would like to make them work if possible, if not I will reconsider.

I am also curious as to what the general consensus is on Kayvaan Shrike. He found himself into my list without much reflection as I wanted a decent melee HQ with a Jump Pack to go with and support the Vets, and he seemed the obvious choice, but I actually have no idea whether he is worth it or not. Would a kitted out Captain fill the role as well or better? If so, I figure that might free up some points to swap the Techmarine to a Lieutenant and/or maybe some other small upgrades where they might fit.

Finally, I'm a bit curious about the Leviathan Dreads, since Valkyrie suggested one. I haven't really looked to closely at them as an option. If I were to run one, what role(s) would it fill and what wargear options tend to be preferable?

Again, thank you for the feedback, it's much appreciated!

Simple rule of thumb.

Techmarines are only useful if you have alot of vehicles. Otherwise while they are cheap they aren't as good as the main HQ choices.
