Affton, MO. USA

My vote is for MODOCK, first painted Mierce creature I’ve seen and it’s gorgeous, also hits that “Wild” theme for me.

Kudos to everyone, with a three way tied vote for second place in my opinion for Nevelon, Bellephoron and feltmonkey all for skill, some nostalgia and hitting the theme .

Thanks for letting me participate guys, had fun which is most important and learned a lot from everyone else who was posting progress either here or in their other threads.

Gave my votes to Nev, Modock, QAR, and Chris56 but there were some fantastic entries and it was very hard to limit myself to just a few. I'm sad I couldn't enter this month but I'll be in for the next one!

Well done everyone!

Nevelon - Old school! Nice definition on the bark, and the spot colours work well to transform them from trees in to monsters, without overwhelming the limited pallette.

Rybrook - A wild Ultramarine? Heresy!

Jadenim - Nice to see Kroot getting some love, now I'm wishing I'd had time to dig out my old Prey Shaper conversion. The rider and mount are just separated enough in colour (unless it's just me being colour-blind) to avoid them blending in to one.

Captain Brown - I do love that mottled style of painting on Eldar tanks. I wonder how it would work on Dark Eldar stuff...?

Tikay Fortooun - Oh, he's wild in more than one sense. Nice choice to go with a different shade on the shield, and are those 28mm scale flowers I see?

queen_annes_revenge - Wow. That is all.

Modock - I've not seen one of those before. Gorgeous attention to the different materials and ageing.

Bellerophon - Nice combination of more realistic plumage patterning with the overt flames - it would be tempting to let the fire override everything, but I think this works better.

Jamie Shred - That's a very fresh looking kill, he's not getting up again.

Tim the Biovore - I'm not sure, but you may not have enough skulls on there. The chariot's looking good, but smaller pictures are a must (I had a play with a couple myself, and at 25% I can see the whole thing, and a lot of the focus issues are taken care of).

ZergSmasher - It's a Wulfen dance party. Can't get much more wild than that. I think the bases work well, and that looks like some seriously fiddly gold work in places.

Midget Gems - I guess Orks really will loot anything. The riders work surprisingly well on the Cold Ones, even the leader - not something I'd have expected before today.

Maharg - I like the contrast you've got going on between the very pale being and his (or her?) weapons - striking. My neck would love to see them upright though

feltmonkey - I'm no really sure what it is, but given the look of him, I don't know if I want to! I'm going to assume my colour blindness is merging colours together on the majority of the beastie, but the base is looking very natural. To me (and you may actually already have done this, and i just can't tell) Beastie could do with a touch more spot colouring, perhaps a foliage clump like on the base?

Theophony - Pork, I think, unless it's a Rawhead. The model's got an interesting mix of short and long fur, which I think helped you keep the model from being boar-ing (sorry, couldn't resist the pun).

Warpig1815 - I see you're having fun with the new models. Nicely executed tribal motifs - that's become quite a popular identity for Space Sharks. Think of the poor chapter serf who has to scrub off the blood and retouch the paint job though!

Gulgog TufToof - Not sure I've seen a (ruined) building entered before, but the kits certainly deserve more attention. You've got a good-looking piece there without succumbing to the temptation to pick out too many of the details in a different colour. I'm not sure if it's the picture, but the silver looks like it could take a light black wash to add a little more depth for relatively little effort.

Chris56 - I am Groot.

Deadshot - Are those weapons metal? If so, that looks a lot better than I would have thought - like they've grabbed whatever pig metal they could find and beaten it in to shape with rocks.

Stormatious - I'm not sure why I like it so much, but the combination of gradient, edging, and the screaming souls makes Drach'nyen the standout feature for me.

Vejut - I thought I'd misread at first, but no, they're actually shrews. They look like mean little squeakers.

Paradigm - I think you may just have ushered in a new paradigm of Space Wolf / native American conversions. The Escher hairpiece works so well, and the skin tones really sell it (to me at least; who knows what everyone else sees).

Wow, that was a lot of models! Great to see the effort put in to all of them though.

A Protoss colony world

I don't remember who I voted for, so I'll go ahead and give everyone a quick comment:

Nevelon: I love old-school Warhammer models, both fantasy and 40k, and you did a great job on these!

Rybrook: That's a very interesting color scheme on that Librarian, but it actually works pretty well!

Jadenim: I am Kroot! That Kroot looks right at home on the back of that Cold One! The natural brown and green tones really sell it.

Captain Brown: The Wave Serpent might be my second favorite Craftworld model (after the Wraithknight), and I definitely like the dark color scheme on it.

Tikay Fortooun: Glad you managed to squeak in at the last minute! You did a way better pack marking on your Wulfen's knee than I did on mine, and I like the blue shield.

queen_annes_revenge: Wow, just wow! I've always loved the stories about the Red Baron, so seeing you tackle this piece was a lot of fun. It turned out absolutely amazing!

Modock: As always, your paintwork continues to be the envy of us all. I love the way the metallic parts look especially on this guy.

Bellerophon: The Phoenix might be one of my favorite mythical creatures, and this one looks great! The flames on the wings turned out especially lifelike.

Jamie Shred: I wonder if that guy knocked on the door and said "Flowers" or "Candy man" or something before devouring that victim. (Yes, that's an old SNL reference, older than me in fact!) Looks suitably gory, at any rate!

Tim the Biovore: I really like the look you've accomplished with that chariot. The earthy tones really tie the whole thing together, from the chariot itself to the beasts pulling it to the guy riding on it.

ZergSmasher: I really enjoyed doing this entry. It's not as good as a lot of the ones in here, but I'm pretty proud of the models, except for the faces, on which I didn't thin my paints enough so some of the detail was lost. I think I've found a great way to paint all my future frost weapons, at any rate!

Midget Gems: Yet more Cold One Riders, this time it's dem zoggin' Orks! Those will make great counts-as Warbikers or even Nobz on Bikes, and they definitely fit the Snakebites fluff.

Maharg: Interesting choice of skin tone on the Beastmen. Kind of gives them an albino look, which is cool and unique.

feltmonkey: I'm not too knowledgeable about Swamp Thing in general (I don't read comics and I've only seen part of the movie once a long time ago), but you did a pretty good job on the model!

Theophony: Those are really cool models, and you did a great job painting them! I think I like the Minotaur one more than the pig-looking one personally, but they both look good.

Warpig1815: The mostly grayscale colors on the model really make the few gold, red and brown parts pop. This makes me want to get to work on my own Phobos-armored guys.

Gulgog Tuftoof: Normally buildings don't excite me that much (just personal opinion), but the weathering on these really did turn out great, and they'll look great on a game table being fought over by various armies in the 41st millennium.

Chris56: Now THAT is amazing! I can almost hear Bradley Cooper and Vin Diesel speaking when I look at this, despite it being drawn from the comics more than the movies. You did a fantastic job on it!

Deadshot: I love those models, with their primitive weapons and angry-looking faces! Your paintwork is also pretty solid on them as well. I especially like the blood on some of them, as it adds to the whole savage thing.

dukeofbeer: That druid is a pretty characterful model, and of course where would any good druid be without some animal buddies? They look really good together!

Stormatious: You're making me want to go get the new Abaddon! Don't tempt me like that! He looks pretty awesome!

Vejut: I love the color choices on these little guys! You always seem to come up with really cool animal miniatures to paint, and I think you're getting better and better at doing them.

Paradigm: That head actually looks really cool on a Space Wolf, and kudos for doing the hair in a color other than red or gray! As usual, your dark gritty style has been well executed here.

Overall I think the standard for the entries is really high this month, both in quantity and quality! That's one of the things I love about these challenges, as I can get plenty of inspiration from painters that are a lot better than I am. Shout out to Midget Gems for running the challenge in Paradigm's place this month, and I'll see you all in the August one!

Thanks. I'd actually had that head conversion lying around for ages, I'd planned to use it on a White Scars or maybe Dark Angels Marine but when I settled on doing a Space Wolf and it just seemed to fit really well. I'd definitely like to play a bit more with Space Wolves that take some more inspiration than just wolves+vikings in SPAAAACE!

As much as I'd love to claim they were, unfortunately I intended them to be stone I've used Vallejo neutral Grey, wash of Nuln Oil, drybrush of Neutral Grey again and then some Blood for the Blood God. Thanks for the compliment anyway, you've given me the idea to maybe add some stormhost silver flecks to give it that pig metal look in real life so thank you for that!

United Kingdom

Great job everyone who entered. Lots of fun stuff, and a really good standard as usual.

Thanks for the comments, Theophony, SmallChanges, and ZergSmasher. SmallChanges - colourblindness possibly isn't a great thing with this paintjob as I've tried to introduce contrast and make the greens more vibrant by shading the greens with... red! He must look like a bit of a blob. I was trying to paint the miniature himself in quite a comic-book style - comic book quasi-realism rather than genuine realism. I was trying to stay true to the comic, and in the comic even the flower I painted pink as a spot colour is green. I very nearly painted him last year for the three colours only challenge. ZergSmasher - if you've only seen the film, you've not seen Swamp Thing. The Alan Moore run on the comic books is amazing - intelligent, literate, a meditation on the environment and the nature of consciousness. When it does move into horror, it's very much psychological horror, not your usual surface-level comic book stuff. At one point Batman turns up to save the day not by punching faces but by talking city officials round to his point of view.

Nevelon - I play Sylvaneth, so I appreciate these super-retro Oldhammer Dryads. The wood grain really lends itself to both contrast paints and a basecoat and wash style, and these look great.

Rybrook - Great vibrant colours. The attention you've given to the details and the choice of colours means that you've really done the model justice.

Jadenim - Another good job. I like the warpaint on the rider particularly.

Captain Brown - I'm not 100% sold on your justification for it fitting the theme "wildly out of step with it's intended role" but you've done a nice job on it. I like that mottled pattern you've put on the armour patterns, and all the transfers and colourful gems add to the overall effect.

Tikay Fortooun - Great stuff. His face looks fantastic, and the pattern on his kneepad is cool. Have you really accidentally sprayed them with wrathbone paint? That's terrible!

queen_annes_revenge - A very high-quality job. I particularly like the leather effect on the jacket.

Modock - My favorite entry this month. Absolutely spectacular work! The metallics are amazing, I love the weathered, rusty tones you've got on them. Pretty flawless work overall. Even his nutsack is a thing of beauty.

Bellerophon - Another of my favorites. The majority of the model is very solid work, neat and tidy, nicely done. But the flames are fantastic, immediately eye-catching, and give the whole model a "wow" factor.

Jamie Shred - And another great entry! I love the sharky tones on the sharkdog. You've captured that colour and texture really well. I like the little touches like the blood-splatter on the barrel too.

Tim the Biovore - Good neat and moody work. The skin tones are very good. Perhaps it could use a spot colour here or there to add a bit of variety to the tones, and draw the eye? Says the guy who entered an almost entirely green model...

ZergSmasher - Good solid work. Nice work on all the fiddly details of some quite busy models. I like the axe-heads a lot.

Midget Gems - An excellent, over-the-top conversion. Is the middle ork naked? I love the design on his shield, but my eyes keep drifting down onto his arse. I make no apologies for this - it's a very fine arse.

Maharg - A nicely-done beastman. I really like the colour scheme.

Theophony - Of the two, I much prefer "Pork." You've got much better contrast and definition on him, and the addition of the butcher's cuts marked out on his skin is genius. You've got to get the basing sorted out, obviously. Things never look finished unless the base is done, so I think that might have cost you a few votes.

Warpig1815 - Really nice. I like the blood-splatter and particularly the freehand designs on the armour.

Gulgog TufToof - That's looking good. I think you said in the thread that it's not quite finished yet. It looks good already, and I'm sure it will look great when you do finish it off.

Chris56 - Terrific stuff. Groot in particular looks amazing. The variations of colour on his bark is lovely. IT's such a shame about that mould line right across Rocket's forehead. I have no idea what you could have done about it though - file it off and you'll lose detail on the hair. I've painted a few miniatures with mould lines on hairy sections and it's always a nightmare. It still looks brilliant though.

Deadshot -These are very good. The contrast on the skin in particular is great.

dukeofbeer - This is a fun model! You've done a great job of bringing out the character of the model. I love the animal friends.

Stormatious - There's a lot to like here - the edge highligting on the cloak, the face, and I particularly like the way you've done the sword.

Vejut - Great colours, lovely highlighting. The only problem is the high angle you've photographed them from makes it difficult to see what's going on with them.

Paradigm - Good stuff, lots of narrative built-in. You get the feeling he enjoys the work he does with that chainsaw.

See you next month for Metal and Wheels. I might paint a knight...

Rybrook - Lots of neat painting especially on the staff, well done.
Jadenim - Good idea Jadenim, I like the 2 tone skin effect you went for.
Captain Brown - I like the Blue/Black patchiness you manged to get a lot of painting done this month.
Tikay Fortooun - Good pose and you have done well on the skin and amour.
queen_annes_revenge - Just lovely in all areas and made me smile

Jamie Shred - Cool model with a great base that tells story. nice effect for the sharking skin.
Tim the Biovore - Very well painted with a lovey base.
ZergSmasher - I like how you have done the brown fur/hair, and the little blue on the axe works well.
Midget Gems - Bit rushed (like all my other entries over the last few months) but a fun idea I've wanted to do for a while.
Maharg - Nice contract with the pale skin and red shading.
feltmonkey - Cool model, well painted, as has been said needs something extra to contrast all the green.

Gulgog TufToof - Wow you went big and its looks really good.

Exceptionally beautiful work.

Picked Madock because I really enjoyed the colours and also it fit the theme really well!

Thanks for the feedback MG! Yeah, he's my favourite too. I imagine him grabbing the skull and telling others to sod off because he has the big stick.

Thanks to everybody for votes and feedback! I got a little feedback of my own, hope I'm not overstepping!

Nevelon – really liking the shade of brown you’ve gone for on these models, very colourful despite being a “drab” colour and gives them a lot of character. The bases as well are a surprising standout for me and they tie in nicely.

Rybrook – looks fantastic, really feels to me like the older styles from 1st-4th ed, with the yellow and blue and a dash of red on the pistol. I’m not sure if its lighting or deliberate zenith highlighting, but if it’s the later, well done because it looks top!

Jadenim – Cold Ones are some of my favourite models and it’s a conversion that works really well. Especially like the skintone of the Kroot rider, nice muted, foresty brown/green, and the steed really matches the overall Kroot aesthetic

Captain Brown – great job on the pale sections, they came out very smooth on my screen, and I can’t tell but I think the gems are hand-painted rather than the GW gem paints? Either way they add a nice splash of colour and the mottled blue throws me right back to the 5th Ed BRB Hobby section, very nostalgic section on stippling Aloitic patterns

Tikay – never been a fan of Wulfen models but this one looks top, maybe it’s the belt in the middle that does it? Big fan of the smaller details, the freehand on the knee is fantastic and the subtle blue glow on the hammerhead is very nice. However, the little purple flower on the base is phenomenal. Such a small detail that really brings the model to life.

QAR – can’t say anything that hasn’t been said. Its practically photographic. The little mole on the cheek, the texturing of the coat. Well done.

MODOCK – Model of the month for me. Hits the theme perfectly, and I’m normally don’t like non GW models but this just have everything. Reserved rusting of the metal, the chipping, the highlights on the skin and bones, the blue and purple spot colours. Just perfect. Honestly looks like a £400 collectable from Game of Thrones or Lord of the Rings rather than a painted miniature.

Bellerophon – fantastic use of highlighting and shading, it really gives off the impression of being on fire, and the face and beak are fantastic. One minor thing, which is personal choice, is that it might have been cool to put some orange/yellow highlights on the back of the base, to give that OSL and sense of actual fire

Jamie Shred – not familiar with the model but I love the scene you’ve set up and big fan of your highlighting. Gives the shark skin a smooth, shiny, wet look, as if its just popped up from the sea or a sewer!

Tim the Biovore – epic model and hits the theme for me wonderfully. Loving the very muted palette and shading, reminds me a lot of fantasy films like LotR.

Zergsmasher – again, not a big fan of the models but really digging the dynamic posing and the icey weapons, very cool indeed, and the white hair on the pack leader adds a lot of character

Midget Gems – first off, thanks for helping out this month when Para was tied up with stuff! Second, love these conversions. I was planning to go with Savage Ork Boar Boyz for my Snakebite Bikers but I may steal your idea here. Love the dynamic leader, highlighting looks awesome. Having just painted these models muyself I know they can be a bit of hassle to highlight but it looks great and the cold ones as well. The Warbike guns fit perfectly and actually remind me a lot of the Velociraptors scene from Jurassic World

Maharg – really liking the pale-skin Beastman, very different to the usual dark brown

Feltmonkey – as others have said, it’s a really cool rendition of a character that I always found quite boring, and the highlight and use of colour (flower) is a great touch!

Theophony – the skin tone for both models is spot on, particularly the bull creature works really well with that palette. Would have loved to see them based as well but good job!
Warpig – awesome job, I’m a big fan of that model and the conversion work is excellent. Very gritty model and I love the extra details than come into play, like the white pattern across the gun scope and the black lines on the head that lend it that Raven Guard successor feel

Gulgog – Really enjoy the colour of the stone is this one! I painted the same sections for this comp a few months ago and they’re surprisingly detailed, so kudos for getting such a large piece done this month!

Chris56 – some of my favourite Marvel Characters and they look superb! Again not sure how much of the texture is the sculpt vs painting but Groot in particular kills it, and the small details on Rocket, like the AX7 and “Bess” go a long long way
¬

Deadshot – clearly the best painted models of all time, been robbed when it comes to voting

DukeofBeer – cheeky little model, like how the different colours come together and make a coherent piece!

Stormatious – love the colours you’ve gone for on the armour, the focus on gold and red over black is an interesting look, and I especially like the way in which you’ve painted the sword, space marine armour and cloak, it’s a really nice effect. More than that I really really love the base, I’m not quite sure what it is but I get the impression of a something in the warp, maybe a beach or tundra, with sigils cutting through? Either way it looks really great with the beige texturing

Vejut – Awesome and colourful little models! Must have been very finicky to paint but looking tidy!

Paradigm – Very gory, very atmospheric, very cool. I especially like the white/bone details on the belt and bolter, they add a nice touch, and that outrageous mohawk is so undeniably space wolf.

Great work again everybody! Thanks for the comments and votes for my Phoenix, I'm glad you guys like it. The power of huge amounts of drybrushing with progressively slightly darker shades...

Nevelon - Oh man, the nostalgia. The style you've used fits very nicely with these, and I love the eyes.
Rybrook - Another classic, and the bright colour scheme also fits the old model very well.
Jadenim - The Kroot and the Cold One go together well - it feels natural like it's an official kit rather than a conversion or kitbash. Good stuff.
Captain Brown - Nice mottled scheme and good dedication to paint all of those gems!
Tikay Fortooun - The blue and gold on that shield are so rich, they draw my eye straight away. The kneecap looks really cool too.
queen_annes_revenge - lovely work as always. The subtle blending of tones on his uniform and coat are magnificent.
Modock - Marvellous blended tones on the skin, and the metallics are fantastic. I reckon this one will be a well deserved winner this week.
Bellerophon - Me. So... moving on.
Jamie Shred - Cool choice of model, and I like the style of shading and highlighting you've used. It looks almost ripply... like water...
Tim the Biovore - Perfect choice of tone for the beastmen and the tuskgors, and I love the basing.
Zergsmasher - They look suitably furious! Good job on the metallics and the blue-grey tone.
Midget Gems - More cold ones! The orks look great on them too - I love the middle one with the spear and choppa, he fits the theme wonderfully. The snakebite shield is a nice touch too.
Maharg - simple, classic and well executed. The tone of the cloth works great against the skin and fur.
feltmonkey - Lovely mix of green tones, an effective accent with the flower, and another one with really cool basing.
Theophony - Cool choice of models, I've not seen these before. I like the grimy metal on the axe in particular.
Warpig1815 - Grimy, rough and dangerous. This guy really gives the impression of being in the thick of the fighting for quite some time.
Gulgog TufToof - The tones are really fitting. It must take ages to paint these.
Chris56 - I love the tones you've got on Groot's face and eyes here, perfect selections and incredibly effective.
Deadshot - Savage orcs are the tits. That pair with the enormous spear have got me chuckling, very well done!
dukeofbeer - cool choice of models here, I like the almost exaggerated shading on the face, and the spell effect is well done.
Stormatious - Nicely realised version of Abby here. I like the sword and the marine helmet on the trophy rack. Weirdly enough, that helmet seems to come up great on nearly every painted version of this model that I've seen! The ashen complexion of his face works well too.
Vejut - Cute little guys! I like the green/blue/pink combo, very extravagant.
Paradigm - Nicely wild and bloody - the head is particularly effective.

Thanks for the feedback everyone.

Here's some comments on my votes, difficult to choose as always due to the high level of quality throughout the entries.

Captain Brown - love the kind of stippled highlights you have gone for here and so many gems.

Modock - love the different textures you have achieved on the skin, the metals look great too.

Bellerophon - those flames look so realistic, well done.

Chris 56 - some lovely little details there, really like Groot's glowing green eyes.

Hopefully they get rid of this touch screen nonsense and start bringing back buttons / keys.

We got winners!

In third place, queen_annes_revenge with this incredibly painted bust of the infamous Red Baron:

In second, only a couple of votes ahead, Bellerophon's incandescent Flamespyre Phoenix:

And taking the win this month, Modock's monstrous Vorlun:

Speaking of winners, we've also got some big news regarding the future of the challenge: After 4 and a half years, I've been given the go-ahead to drop the 'unofficial' part of our title and going forward, this will be known as the Dakka Painting Challenge!* This also comes with a little sponsorship from the Higher Ups, in the form of our first prize support. For the 2019/20 rotation of the League ending next March, the overall winner for the year will be receiving a set of six (6) of these lovely Dakka Dice, usually only available to those with DCM membership:

This won't change anything about how the challenge is run, but there's now a little token of victory for the overall victor which should spur on the competition in those final months of the League's rotation! Also want to say a quick thanks to the mod ingtaer for getting all this cleared with Yakface and sorting out the prize dice!

*to avoid confusion, though, term 'official' will still be reserved for actual site-run events.

Congrats to the winners! Great work.

Exciting news about the prize dice, Para, although I'm annoyed I peaked too soon by winning it last year! I'm way off the pace this time round.

Grats to the winners and all the participants.

Thanks for the comments and everyone who voted for my entry. This, despite not being close to the best paintjob I’ve done, is one of my top finishers for this comp. Amazing what a tight adherence to the topic and a lot of nostalgia can do.

Nice to see our little side project gain some legitimacy!

COngratulation, QAR, Bellerophon and Modock! Well deserved wins and great entries all around!

Thanks for all the votes and comments to everyone who gave me! Really appreciate it and can't wait to get next month's project done!

Also, Paradigm, wonderful news about the dice prize, really amazing to see the competition given a bit of legitimacy. Just too bad I'll never win those dice with the standard being this high
