Subject: [KS] IAN MILLER'S GRIM TAROCK - Finished at £25k
|

Ian Miller's Grim Tarock ends today, 7pm GMT!
Almost 800% funded, plenty of unlocked stretch goals (free to all backers!) plus art book and signed art print as add-ons.
KS link:
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/brassmonkeygames/ian-millers-grim-tarock
I have had the great honour and pleasure of working with Ian Miller these past few months on a full set of 78 tarock (tarot) cards. We are still finalising a few things, but the deck is pretty much there so we thought it might be time to begin sharing some teaser images...
I don't know about you guys, but 'older' folks like me grew up on a diet of Ian Miller art back in the 70s/80s/90s, especially during the Age of Oldhammer (Warhammer Fantasy, WFRP, Rogue Trader, Fighting Fantasy) and his incredible artwork for the Tolkien Bestiary and many fantasy novels.
It will be a full tarock deck of 78 cards, suitable for playing any number of traditional tarot/tarock/trionfi games. The deck consists of:
22 Major Arcana (including The Fool)
14 Citadels (Coins)
14 Trees (Wands)
14 Fish (Cups)
14 Chaos (Swords)
We decided to go for a simple black border and an elegant font that would not in any way detract from the main focus of the cards, which of course is the rather spiffing artwork. We hope you like them - more teasers (and details on the forthcoming Kickstarter) coming soon!
Cheers
James

I wasn't aware since, as the project creator, this is the first time I have posted about the project on Dakka.
A subsequent search for 'Ian Miller' does indeed bring up another thread on this subject. I am sorry to hear that you think this is spamming.

Really looking forward to this, Ian Miller is an absolute legend.
Will the four suits be modern, or more traditional Italian style - swords, batons, coins and cups?

The art's amazing, but will there be seperated colored and black and white decks? It seems odd to have both styles in the same deck.

Lovely work, I am eager to see this come to life. Following and pledging for sure. The Tower card is especially stunning in my eyes.
Questions I am eager to resolve:
Will the Minor Arcana Chaos Suite still embody Swords in the images? That would be quite a leap to read without them!
Secondly, will the Court Cards appear somewhat similar in design to the Rider Waite Smith standard, or appear differently?

Cheers! The four traditional suits - coins, wands, cups, swords - have been replaced with more Milleresque versions - citadels, trees, fish and chaos. All in keeping with recurring themes in his artwork from the last four decades or so. The cards are all the same though - 14 in each suit being Ace, 2-10, Jack, Knight, Queen and King.

Thanks Shrapnelsmile! The Chaos suit will have some characters wielding weapons, but the main difference from the other suits (trees, fish and citadels) is that the cards will not contain, um, trees, fish and citadels, and will instead be various chaotic/evil characters/beasties.
Regarding your second question, the primary goal was to create cards for traditional tarot type games (trionfi, tarock, tarocco etc.) and not with divination in mind, although the major arcana cards have all the usual suspects, from The Fool to The World. I am afraid I am not well versed in the Rider Waite Smith standard.
infinite_array wrote:The art's amazing, but will there be seperated colored and black and white decks? It seems odd to have both styles in the same deck.
Glad you like the art! Good question, and one we mulled over long and hard ourselves. The deck will be a mix of colour and b&w art, but the main reason for this is one of time - due to ongoing commissions and projects, Ian Miller does not have the time to produce an entire deck in one particular style, rather using a combination of his styles and a mix of new and existing artwork from his extensive back catalogue.

Goddamn, so on board with this. While I've not yet found an excuse to write on it, The Luck in the Head was a major contributor to me taking the medium seriously as an academic field.
Also, have you guys considered leaving the title off the 13, i.e. the traditional "l'arcane sans nom"? I always liked that aesthetic/conceptual choice.

Glad to hear you approve! We are not going for the l'arcane sans nom and will be naming Death, since that is in keeping with many traditional tarot games from across Europe.
And here are another couple of teasers from the Citadels suit...

Are there any correlations between the number cards and any of the common tarot themes, a loose narrative, or just the numbers? I.e. I'm not really getting how the 2 indicates a 2 vs. the 3 indicating a 3?

Where possible we will be fitting the numbered cards to tarot themes, but otherwise it is a looser narrative. This is simply because we need to use some of Ian’s existing artwork from his extensive back catalogue.

Cool, thanks for the info! I mean, unless it's priced something crazy, I'm assuming I'll be on board; mostly I just did a deck print run a while back, so I was just curious about your process and choices.

Will there be any Keywords on the Minor Arcana in the final product?
I general I find them constricting for my querents, but beneficial for study and contemplative, so I'm good with them present or absent either way. Very curious, however.
I've been spreading this to my professional reader colleagues and some are very hyped. Cheers!

Cheers dude, appreciate you asking pertinent questions - always happy to help. As for pricing, we are just finalising that at the moment, but it will be comparable with many tarot decks currently on the market - more than some, cheaper than others

There won't be any keywords, no. The suit cards will just be named/numbered i.e. Ace, King etc. The main reasoning behind this was to make them suitable for many types of traditional tarot/tarock/tarocco games.
Kid_Kyoto wrote:Not into Tarot but I am into Iam Miller art so I'm onboard.

Pleased to hear it! These cards will make great collector art cards, or you can always use them for a number of different traditional European card games.

He does have an 'ancestor' in Slaves to Darkness. I think you might be referring to this one
