Wanted to start building a DG list that was somewhat competitive/somewhat fluff. First and foremost i am NOT bringing titans (hence the fluff) it's meant for more local games/games against friends (if i can find them). The only things I KNOW are going to be in the list so far is a Mortarion and 2 plageburst crawlers. Crawlers will have mortars/ 2x spitters <140> per so 280, And Mort is 470 i believe. I'll also probably run 1-2 5-10 man blobs of plague marines (i like the models) and thinking about adding 1-3 bloat drones for gaks n giggles. I'm totally new to Death Guard and would like any help/recommendations and/or advice! Thanks!

Somewhere in the bloody warp

I tend to build my army in building blocks - a stalwart of my lists is a trio of FBDs led by a winged DP (outrider), which forms the vanguard of the list - pressing ahead as the first wave to take out screens and draw enemy fire.

Behind them come a formation of plague marines, typically in squads of 5 or 7 men, with blight launchers. They're led by a chaos lord (warlord with Arch-Contaminator and Fugaris' Helm) - who's a really good force multiplier. They're not the most competitive option, but I find they work satisfactorily. I don't tend to go in for PBCs but I can see why people do for the indirect fire.

Another staple is a large blightlord squad (10 men), deepstriking into the centre of the board - they can throw out a lot of anti-infantry firepower and are perfect for removing screens and chaff. Buffed with a sorcerer with Blades of Putrefaction, they can chuck out a lot of mortal wounds in the fight phase, but without it don't expect them to bring down heavy targets.

As a general strategy, aim to leverage your staying power to dominate the centre of the battlefield and claim objectives. You won't have amazing DPS, but you will be around longer to throw out more hurt over time. If you want to run Morty, you have to hear your entire army around him - I'm sure others can give you better advice because I don't play primarchs personally.

Thanks, yeah i think i might ditch mortarion, i dont mind the primarchs, but you HAVE to build around them to do really any good, so i think im ditching him for Typhus/Plague Terminator lord.

Typhus is a beast, and a considerable force multiplier if you're taking pox-walkers, but if you're dropping a hefty Blightlord bomb then a terminator lord will reap greater returns.

Most competitive lists are a DG/Nurgle Daemons soup, utilising the PBCs along with lots of plaguebearers and a chaos knight of some description, but pure DG are fine on their own for friendly games and even more competitive settings - just be aware that their anti-tank is somewhat lacking. Myphitic Blighthaulers make up for some of that, as do PBCs, but they lack a bit of accuracy. I'm looking to add in some Purge Havocs.

Would it be worth it to run separate thing and throw in havocs and or 3 obliterators. The oblits seem really easy to kitbash as Nurgle?

Oblits are probably your best bet - there are a lot of synergies with Nurgle Daemons - in particular Epidemics and the Gnarlmaw trees

Do oblits count as nurgle? Or do i have to run them as a "demon" "chaos" detachment? I dont have a codex on hand and finding pdf versions seems to be for not...

You run them as a detachment and pick the mark of nurgle... then they are nurgle (just not deathguard)
