I've recently been enticed back into 40k by the new GSC mini range. However, i have no interest in running abberants, abominants, or cult armor of any kind. I found a list online I used as inspiration (https://www.40kstats.com/warzone-houston) but I am worried I may have changed it for the weaker.

+Bladed Cog Battalion

Patriarch, crouchling, alien majesty

Alphus

3x10 Neophytes, 2 Mining laser, 2 Grenade launcher

Kelermorph

Nexos

+Bladed Cog Battalion

Primus, Single Minded Obsession

Alphus

3x10 Neophytes, 2 Mining laser, 2 Grenade launcher

Kelermorph

+Four Armed Emperor Battalion

Iconward

Magus, Inscrutable Cunning

2x20 Acolyte Hybrids, Hand Flamers

10 Brood Brothers

+Rusted Claw Battalion

Alphus

Magus

3x10 Brood Brothers

12 Jackals, 5 demolition charges, 3 grenade launchers. 3 Wolfquads, mining lasers. All shotguns.

By removing the heavy weapon mortars and sentinels from the first list, I gravitate more towards models I like, but it it at too much of a competitive disadvantage? I've added more brood brother squads as opposed to minimum acolyte squads to fill out troop slots. While I have more command points than the original list, I'm not sure its worth it. I'm also not sold on the second magus in the rusted claw detachment, I just wasn't certain what other HQ to use. I'm also concerned that losing the Sanctus may be a mistake. Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

This looks like a pretty useful list.

I find one glaring problem: you have four detachment. Most everyone plays with a three detachment limit at 2000p.

Quickest fix I can think of is to drop the second Jackal Alphus and combine the two Bladed Cog batallions into one. Move the second Kelermorph into the rusted claw detachment.

I would certainly want one unit of rock saw acolytes in any list. They are just so effective against hard targets. Not sure what to replace though. Maybe one of the hand flamer units. I still think you should have enough anti horde anyway, and that could let you use Lying in Wait on the bikes, as an alternative to starting them on the table.

Thanks for pointing that out! Here's an updated fix. Am I making a mistake not including a magus, clamavus, or any jackals?

Much better!

First of all, I think you can do perfectly fine without magus, clamavus, or jackals.

I'm thinking a bit about charges from Underground. You have 4 units that really wants to get stuck in (2x saw acolytes and 2x aberrants) and you can only use perfect ambush once per turn. Even with the reroll from Deliverance broodsurge iconward you are going to fail too many 9" charges, or 8" charges for the anointed throng aberrants. So units will be stranded and shot to pieces. Adding a clamavus makes it an 8" rerollable or a 7", much better but still fails to often for my taste.

You can probably get rid of at least one of the assaulty units. That should give you points for some jackals if you like them (because so far you have only the flamer acolytes that needs Lying in Wait) or for some more mining laser neophytes in Bladed Cog.

But honestly, this list looks fine. I'm on the fine tuning suggestions here. Play it a few times and see how it works out for you!

Hey, thanks a lot for all your help! I actually was convinced to run the abberants after seeing Nick Nanivatti's lists running them to success, but I have a huge distaste for the models as I dont think they fit the oldschool theme of the cult which I enjoy. I finally settled on a list utilizing only models I really enjoy which can hopefully be competitive as well. It also solves the issue of oversaturation of melee units. Quick rules question: does the patriarch receive a +1 to invuln for being a member of the bladed cog, bringing him to 4+? I'm also not sure what warlord trait to give my magus if I take broodcoven. I plan on giving the primus inscrutable cunning. Possibly the BRB trait for +morale since the only patriarch I have only gives fearless to the bladed cog neophytes?

That list looks really interesting!

Unfortunately the Patriarch has the GENESTEALER keyword, so he doesn't get any cult creed benefits :-(

I agree that choosing warlord trait for the Magus is tricky. None of them are fantastic.

For the Primus, I like Alien Majesty as well. It means less fiddling about with chaining chargers towards him.

Play a few games and let us know how it works!

Just wanted to say thanks again. I'm very paranoid about building an army before having a well thought out list due to prior experiences, and now that I have one I am very excited about the undertaking ahead. Good looking out!
