Hi guys.

It's been quite a while since I actually played 40k, and I'm looking to get back into the game with Chaos Marines. I recently picked up the Chaos Battalion Detachment box, a box of Havocs and a Master of Possession (which I intend to proxy as a regular sorcerer until we get a plastic power armour sorcerer model.

I've been toying with some lists, and as I really don't like the cultist models (they really don't fit what I feel Chaos Cultists represent, and the boxes of 5 monopose models really don't float my boat), so to maximise the usefulness of the 30 Marines I have, I've decided to go down the obvious route and go with Red Corsairs.

It's worth noting, that I don't wish to play competitive in a tournament aspect. I'll mostly be playing friends or casual games, however I'd still like the list to be somewhat functional and not be walked over. My budget dictates also that for the time being, I'll have to stick with the models I currently own (1 Terminator Lord, 1 Master of Possession, 30 Chaos Marines, 6 Bikes, 5 Havocs), to build a list.

I also want to use this list as the foundation to build on in future when I do have the budget to expand.

This is what I've come up with so far at 1k points.

Chaos Space Marines 1000 points

Legion: Red Corsairs
Command Points: Battalion (5) + Battle Forged (3) + Red Corsairs (3) = 11

HQ

Chaos Terminator Lord (Warlord)
- Mark of Slaanesh
- Exalted Champion Warlord Trait
- Intoxicating Elixir Relic
- 2x Lightning Claws
107

Chaos Sorcerer
- Mark of Tzeentch
- Force Stave
- Plasma Pistol
- Prescience, Diabolic Strength Psychic Powers
103

TROOPS

Chaos Space Marines

- Aspiring Champion w/ Bolt Pistol and Power Axe
- 3x Bolters
- 1x Autocannon
80

Chaos Space Marines

-Aspiring Champion w/ Bolt Pistol and Power Axe
- 3x Bolters
- 1x Autocannon
80

Chaos Space Marines

- Mark of Khorne
- Aspiring Champion w/ 2x Lightning Claws
- 12x Bolters
- 5x Bolt Pistol & Chainsword
- 2x Plasma Gun
294

FAST ATTACK

Bikers
- Mark of Nurgle
- Biker Champion w/ Bolt Pistol & Combi-Bolter
- 3x Bolt Pistol & Combi-Bolter
- 2x Meltagun, Bolt Pistol & Combi-Bolter
166

HEAVY SUPPORT

Havocs
- Mark of Slaanesh
- Aspiring Champion w/ Chainsword & Plasma Gun
- 2x Lascannon
- 1x Missile Launcher
- 1x Reaper Chaincannon
171

TOTAL = 1,001 (the extra 1 point won't matter to my friends)

As I said, the list doesn't need to be super competitive, just fun to play, and I like the idea of all four Chaos Gods being represented by at least one unit each.

In terms of what I expect the list to play like, I'd say that with the Lord being the only model in Terminator Armour, I'd probably look to deep strike him in behind cover and try and get a charge, he's basically configured to be as blender like as possible with the Claws, his Trait and the Elixir, he should be putting out a fair amount of high quality attacks, even more so if I can get Diabolic Strength off on him.

The Sorcerer is a buffer for the big unit of Chaos Marines and the Lord, hopefully getting Prescience and Diabolic Strength off respectively.

The two smaller units of Chaos Marines I expect to sit on back field objectives and take pot shots with their autocannons, the Power Axes are there to add a little defensive punch in the unfortunate event they find themselves in combat.

As for the bigger unit of Marines, they would obviously be the ideal target for the More Where They Came From Strategem, I mostly see them advancing to contest the middle of the board, the mix of bolters and chainswords is to give them a little more of a versatile loadout which I think is important in the middle of the board (and because the new kits don't come with enough bolters to equip the whole unit), the MoK is just in case I need them to fight in melee again using the Fury of Khorne strategem in an emergency. The Lightning Claws on the Champion will add that little more kick and maybe deter a charge occasionally.

Bikers are a harrassment unit that can hopefully also threaten the odd armoured vehicle or heavier infantry through weight of fire and the threat of the Meltaguns at closer range. Hopefully they can also act as a slight distraction unit too.

The Havocs are a bit of a mixed bag in terms of loadout. The Lascannons may be overkill at 1k point but will come in useful I'm sure as heavier vehicles appear at bigger point costs. They should also make light work of any vehicles found at 1k points. The Missile Launcher is basically there for its versatility, it can either assist the Lascannons with Krak Missiles or the Autocannon for anti infantry with its Frag Missiles. The Autocannon is there simply because its rate of fire makes it scary, and on the Havocs it is free to move and shoot without losing any accuracy. It should also act as a charge deterrant to some extent and hopefully get a few hits in overwatch if they do find themselves being charged.

Thanks for reading this wall of text and for any feedback you can offer!
Andrew

Hi man, welcome back to 40k! I'd not played since 5th ed and came back in 8th. Here's a couple of thoughts that could be useful. Not sure if you have bitz to change out loadouts of if you've only got them armed as is.

The havocks are likely to be all at distance so I would be tempted to swap the autocannon with the reaper chaincannon so you can hide them at the back and move out of cover and shoot.

I like to have one blob of 10 khorne CC marines and 10 slanesh bolter and plasma/reaper autocannon marines, with my red cosairs. So if you haven't got them already built I'd go. 10 with chainsword, lightning claws on champion. 15 with bolters except a combi plasma on champion and 2x reaper chaincannons or plasma guns and 5 with an autocannon for backfield objectives.

I'd also swap out the lighting claws on your lord of a combi melta and give him the red cosair multi melta relic. It is great and you'll always be able to shoot it after deepstrike plus Terminators always get bolter discipline. It's really hard to get a 9" charge off after deepstrike so you'll get in less than half the time with a reroll.

Finally if you're looking to expand a RC list Huron is fantastic ruleswise and if you have a spare marine to stick his head, right arm and backpack on he looks great too. Lord Discordants are also great with RC.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for the reply mate!

In terms of bitz I am quite limited to the box contents plus the pair of Lightning Claws I had lying round.

The Havocs I could change to consist of 2x Lascannon and 2x Autocannons, this would take up my bitz inventory for both weapons.

With the 10 man unit of Khorne CC marines, do you not find that they die a little quick? Factoring in overwatch etc if they take a few losses they may struggle a bit with volume of attacks?

I was thinking maybe a 5 man backfield unit with a Missile Launcher, a unit of 10 with a Mark of Slaanesh, Chaincannon and Plasma Gun, and a unit of 15, Mark of Khorne, LC's on the Champ, a Plasma Gun and a Flamer?

Regarding the Lord, I see what you mean about the relic but by taking that I'd lose out on the Elixir, which would then possibly limit his CC output which is where I really want him to be. I'd think he'd be able to weather a turn of shooting with his 2+/4++?

The changes I've made also put me at 1037 pts. I'm thinking to shave points I'd drop a biker, the Power Axe on the backfield champion, Plasma Pistol on the Sorcerer and then I'd still need to shave another 5 points somewhere.

No worries. The 10 man CC marines are pretty potent now, they have 32 s4 attacks on the charge which will put a dent in any t4 or lower unit and you can advance and charge them.

They don't suffer overwatch casualties too badly, unless it's something like tau but then they have the ability to toast anything below a knight in overwatch. I recently lost 27 of my 30 bloodletters on a tau charge!!

The changes you've made all seem sensible although I would really consider keeping that lord back with relic gun for rerolls. He's not as tough as he looks and it's difficult to get the charge off.

What sort of stuff are you likely to play?

Actually you have access to two free relics, due to beeing able to make your warlord a reaver Lord.

CC marines with the additional attack and beeing khorne and access to recycling and the charge icon makes them actually not to shabby imo.

Chaos marines players: "Since when are Daemonengines 30k models and why do i have NO droppods now?"
GW" MONEY.... erm i meant TOO MANY OPTIONS (to resell your army to you again by disalowing former units)! Do you want specific tyranid fighiting Primaris? Even a new sabotage lieutnant!"
Chaos players: Guess i stop playing or go to HH.

For havocs I would suggest 2 las, 2 missile if you can't do 4 las. This way you can keep them far far away. The 24 inch on the chaincannon will make you want to keep them closer. Consider a Chaincannon in your CSM, or hold off and keep it for a bigger list with more havocs (I run 3 havoc squads (in my 2k list), 4 las, 4 missile, 4 chain)
