I've played a few table top games over the years but never any GW stuff. Since 8e came out I've kept my eye on 40k since I've always liked the models. A few friends of mine have recently switched over to 40k and say they love 8e. For awhile now I've had an idea for a combined arms list of Astra Militarum & Space Wolves but after going to NOVA open this weekend and walking through the 40k hall I noticed the Imperial Knights with wolf heads and I started to think that might be even cooler. Honestly I love the big tanks and big stompy robots and whatever I settle on will inevitably have one or the other in it.

Thematically the list's backstory would be that this young knight would be of House Teryyn and be hunting down a renegade knight who he had made an oath to destroy. During his travels he stumbled upon Fenris, he so loved the hospitality and culture of the stark difference of their lifestyle in Fang from his boring ritualistic life back home on Voltoris that he frequently visited while on the oposite side of the galaxy from his true home. During his visit he befriended some of the Ironwolves great company who greatly admired his machine of war. After many years on his quest to dispatch the renegade night and many visits to Fenris he began to think of Fenris as his true home. He would often go on excursions with the Ironwolves and after time they took him in as one of their own, making several modifications to his Paladin ( wolf head, paint, runes on his chain blade, insignia to match theirs). His story in some ways echoed that of their Primarch Leman Russ' tale of being taken in by wolves. Now, as he closes in on the Renegade Knight he is worried that if he is to head home after he has succeeded that he will likely miss his new brothers, and is seriously contemplating becoming a freeblade and making Fang his new home.

On the table I think it would be played the knights in the back behind bubble wrap of wolves and the dread/terminators dropping in where needed. Lots of guns, lots of really tough nuts to crack/ wolves to get through to get to the knights. Not sure which Relic to give the Space Wolves, the stone or armor of Russ. Having never actually played 40k I would love some feedback on how this looks:

I'll Be Back

Good to see you taking an interest in 40k! Always good to see more people interested in the game!

To answer your question, I am curious how you want to play the game mostly: Narraratively or competitively.
This will change how and why you deploy different types of models

For example, thematically, I love the list! It's got a lot of flavor, and the image of wolves running around the feet of a giant robot makes me smile!

In terms of competitiveness, this becomes a bit more complicated, but the main thing I would suggest is playing some games with this list.
This is where I usually find what works and what needs fine tweaking. Most people will be too with you proxying or borrowing whatever models you need just to test things out before you commit to a list.

I'm not a space wolves player here, but here are my initial thoughts, and things to look for when you are playing:

1) I think you'll find that the majority of the work is done by your knights. They have high defenses and can dish out a LOT of damage.
2) It looks like you will start the game with 6CP. This is not necessarily terrible, but CP is the way that you activate your units special abilities, get rer-rolls, etc. So usually you want as many as you can get while balancing that with powerful units. Usually for space marines, people will take a batallion detachment to get some extra CP, and troops are solid with the Objective Secured ability.
3) While I appreciate wolves as a screen, you might find that, given they are only toughness 4 with a 6+ save and 1 wound, they die very easily. This is combined with the fact that they are 9 pts. (Which from my experience, though they are fast, they may die too easily for their points cost).
This might be remedied with taking troop choices instead and getting the batallion detachment.

In addition, all this might be moot because the supplements are coming out for space marines, and one of them may be space wolves. We will have to see. My advice for now is to play some games with what you can and get a feel for the game.

Best of luck!

The top units from the SW side of things are...

Wulfen, Wolf Guard Bikers with Storm Bolter + Storm Shield (index only), Rune Priests, Bjorn, Jump Pack smash captain type wolf lors or WGBL. All three tropp options are OK, especially with Drop-Pods back in play. Only run Blood Claws, if they are with Wulfen and ideally a wolf priest. Bjorn is good.

Dunno. This is off the top of my head. I don't personally like fenrisian wolves OR terminators this edition.
