I'm returning to the hobby after quiting in 6th edition. Didn't like where it was heading. came back once i found out 8th was the way it was. didn't learn about the current changes until months after it released but was certainly a nice surprise. Have been collecting ever since. This is a Mini Marine army. Primaris are fine, I do have about a thousand points or so... but thats ages away from being anything of note. I have no idea which direction I want to head with them.

Still... I know Mini Marines. I'm comfortable with them. I have this army all bought (accept for 5 assault marines, looking into it) and i have most of it painted too. Working on the assault marine now. Then just have 2 vindicators and a rhino to paint and base and it'll be ready for the field. Hoping I can finally start going to the club with it (No I don't "Need" to paint them but it costs £20 travel there and back... I want a good time..).

Anyways, the list here. This is leaps and bounds over what my noobie self had back in the day. This actually looks good. This did start as a Battalion with secondary attachments but after I got annoyed that tactical marines still can't have 2 special weapons per unit i set about trying too and then it just kinda drifted to a Brigade. One of the best changes from 6th to now... multiple units can ride the same transport. So i setup my units accordingly. Each 'Unit' is actually made of of two. 1 with a combi and 1 without. their all modelled to make sense so theres no confusion. I like to think that their just combat squading and the other team is being led by a aspiring sgt.

The army is made up into effectivly 3 elements. 1) Fast Assault with the Assault Marines & Drop pod with melta teams. 2) Battleline with the razorback, rhinos and vindicators. and lastly 3) Fire Support with the Devastators and Dreadnoughts. No silly shenanigans, just bodies, and lots of them, most can get around very fast. It's biggest weakness is of course dealing with large amounts of armour. I don't see this as much of a problem though as from the looks of the pics that get posted each week on the clubs facebook page, it looks very infantry heavy. very few seem to own large titans. Which is great, their awesome models but whole armies of them just seem... a tad boring. they seem to have a very measured approach, not so tournament crazed. All this is great because I always wanted to field whole companies but being a college scrub..never had money. So yer.. at 2500 points I can at least manage a demi company.

Finally someone who isn't bowing to the pressure of Primaris!

Few things

Chaplains....for all the buffs they may have received, they are still not as good as Captains or Librarians. put a jump pack on a captain and buff him to Chapter Master and you're rerolling everything to hit.

Melta is now not really worth it for the points it costs. Plasma gun is better on your tactical squads.

On your devs many will argue that plasma cannons are now better than missile launchers. i'd try a combo.

Rhinos no longer have open topped rule so you can't fire out the top hatch, so they're purely transports now

I actually did a kitbash for a chaplain months ago. befor all the buffs. i could call him a captain but the model is a lot more expensive. it's modeled with a thunder hammer with some fancy stuff going on. Which is a stand in for the benediction of fury. Cost is also why the 2nd lieutenant isn't a captain. but re-rolling 1s to wound is better then nothing. alternatively i could buy a techmarine for the dreads.. Meltas are just for variety. I don't like the idea of 3 of the same unit..and i do need SOME anti armour. As for the devs, the main bulk of the army is Mk4 armour from the betrayal at calth set. Though personally i prefer missiles to plasma canons simply for the versatility. Also no captain nearby. in time i'll start buying the new kits and then probably magnetise them. And lastly, rhinos. Yer i know, but i'd easily trade that for being about to take multiple units in it. I've been going over this 1 list for weeks, nickle and diming points like crazy lol.

Slight revision . Replaced the flamer tactical squad with one of the assault squads. It's gives a few more attacks in close combat. and the reduced costs can get another Vindicator, and upgrades the Lieutenant to a Captain which in turn makes him a Chapter Master for all thsoe re-rolls.

Again i'd say you're likely to get more mileage out of combi-plasma and plasma gun on your tactical squad than melta guns.

Even more refinment. I'm trying to balance what I have with whats cheap to buy I have almost everything listed here (like the standard dreadnought, need to buy it for missile launcher anyway. and the extra 4 heavy bolters). Switched out the meltas for flamers and put them in the drop pod and got Long-ranged marksmen to make it work, although no units gonna say no to an extra 3" to shooty stuff. I Have the other ven dread and 10 Scout Snieprs with a Missile Launcher too. And some cataphractii termies with chainfists (captain too as well as that on foot chaplain).

Ok.

So 2 tac squads will be going in a drop pod and coming down behind enemy lines looking to flame some infantry units.

Anything in a drop pod these days, unless you're doing a drop pod assault and multi podding, is essentially a sacrificial unit.

It's there to disrupt and annoy but not do any serious damage.

Unless you take something like a veteran squad or sternguard equipped with combi-bolters (melta, plasma, flamer etc) which can really pack a punch for not TOO many points.
