See title. I've fallen off the console wagon, but I miss stuff like Smash Bros and Pokemon. And playing on the go-my laptop had a crap battery from the start, and now it won't work without being plugged in at all.

So, is a Switch worth it? And if yes, what's some good games to pick up for it?

My current list:

-Smash Bros
-Super Mario Odyssey
-Dark Souls

it is an inntresting machine. part handheld, part konsole.

overall for a nintendo product, yes it is worth it!

there are however a few things to point out:
-official nintendo controll prices are very high. you can get an official ps4/x1 controller for 20-30$, you have to pay allmoust double that for the joy-cons or the pro controller.
-the buttons on the joy-cons are TINY, you will hurt your finger tips if you use them too long. pro controller is a must have for long sessions.
-it consumes quite alot of battery when on the go. you prolly need to buy a power bank or 2 if you intend to use it primarely as a handheld device.
-online play requires a subscription. not nearly as high priced as sony/ms, but still it is a bit annoying.

hate it or love it, you cant own a nintendo machine and not own mario kart! so i would add that to your list.

It's my favorite console at the moment and pretty much the only system I actually finish games on these days. My collection of games that I bought, never finished, repurchased on the switch and completed is.... embarrassing....

The switch is completely worth it.

I also recommend:
Fire Emblem Three Houses
Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle (It's basically Mario XCOM)

Tally another +1. Its the gold standard of mobile gaming right now, and does damn well as a sit down console to boot.

Yeah the switch is great and it’s even starting to pick up a lot of indie PC games the good ones as well.

I would second Fire emblem 3 houses as a must buy, also Astral Chain is proving fun. If you like old school jrpg’s octopath traveller is one of the best.

Your last point is especially laughable and comical, because not only the 7th ed Valkyrie shown dumber things (like being able to throw the troopers without parachutes out of its hatches, no harm done) - Irbis

Surprised no one's mentioned Breath of the Wild yet, considering how well-regarded it is.

Octopath Traveler is pretty good too.

There's a few defaults:
Breath of the Wild
Odyssey
Mario Kart 8
Smash Ultimate

I think people just assume they come bundled with this system at this point.

Breath of the Wild is overrated and given its age overpriced it's not bad I guess just slightly boring or tedious may be a better description.

Just to note it, tetris 99 is free with their online service if you ever wanted to see how good at tetris you are compared to 99 randos. And they recently added some SNES titles to the online rom library that comes with the service as well.

It's why I've been considering the system for a while now.

I recently got one, and I had some buyers remorse immediately after buying it.

But since I have been playing Breath of the Wild, Octopath Traveller and Hollow Knight on it, I am much happier and feel it was a good choice.

I'd love to have one just for the new Smash Bros (since I heard Banjo-Kazooie is finally going to be in it!), but there are actually quite a few good games out or upcoming for the Switch. I just don't do enough console gaming anymore to justify the cost.

My armies (re-counted and updated on 11/1/23, including modeled wargear options):
Dark Angels: ~15000 Astra Militarum: ~1200 | Adeptus Custodes: ~1900 | Imperial Knights: ~2000 | Sisters of Battle: ~3500 | Leagues of Votann: ~1200 | Tyranids: ~2600 | Stormcast Eternals: ~5000

Same thing for me. I got a couple of games, didn't enjoy them as much as I hoped, and then it sat unused for a long time. Eventually I got Mario Odyssey and Mario+Rabbids. Which made me really like the console. Now, whenever a new game is announced I ask myself "Would this be more fun on the plane than on the couch?" That decides if I buy it on the switch or not.

I've been really happy with the online service offerings for the most part. It's not flawless and my collection is heavily augmented via the Megaman (X) Legacy and Mana collections, but I've really been enjoying some of the niche things they throw up on the service and the save point options that let you try some games past a few notoriously hard points easily. Tetris 99 is quite good as well. Likewise, the system is just great for retro indie stuff. Shovel Knight, Katana: Zero, The Messenger, Sonic Mania, Celeste, Cuphead, Iconoclasts, Undertale and so many others just play so well in handheld mode and largely replaced my Steam setup for me.

There's a lot of solid stuff on hand as well, particularly if you missed out on the Wii U. Platinum supporting the system with Bayonetta ports and the recent Astral Chain really makes my day and the Nintendo first part stuff is great. Mario Marker 2 alone will keep you occupied as long as you're can tolerate classic Mario games. Also a shout out to the multiplayer. The controllers are expensive, but because each one splits into 2, its remarkably easy to get 4 player setups of stuff like Kart and Smash. Bomberman R is also the first time I've regularly gotten 8 player Bomberman going solely on the fact that all it requires is finding someone else with a Switch and extra controler to get enough for 8.

As someone with the Wii U, would it still be worth it to make that jump?

I ask more for the wife, whose console it is. . . I hven't looked in a few months now, but last time I did, what kept me from getting the switch for her, was that we already have breath of the wild, and basically all other Wii exclusives that she'd want.

Has there been progress in terms of newer zelda games that aren't on WiiU?

I mean people have been recommending lots of different games on this thread. It really just depends on what you and your wife like to play. The Breath of the Wild sequel is going to be Switch only. Mario Odyssey rocks, Mario+Rabbids is a Gem. There's a new pokemon coming out soon, the new Fire Emblem is blowing up in popularity. I personally also picked up Snipperlcips and Stardew Valley to play with my wife, and its been very fun. I'm finding a lot of games I wouldn't necessarily have played on my PS4 or PC on the switch just because the mobility suits them better.

Zelda-wise they just released the remake of Link's Awakening for the Switch.

Just an FYI if you're thinking about buying the Switch Lite, there are some games that are not compatable due to no motion control in the console. So look up the list of games that dont work right on it before buying. Granted you can buy controllers that do and just use em, but that's an odd fix imo.

The Seitch is a fun console though, recently I've been playing Link Awakening and just love it. Some perfect old school Zelda game play. There's also a bunch of odd lesser known games that are a blast to play on it as well.

I don't think the switch light will let you hook up different controllers. The entire point of the console is that it's permanently in handheld mode.

For me getting a Nintendo consoles always comes down to one question;

Do you like Nintendo games?

The answer to that question is the only one that matters. I got Switch recently solely because of Super Smash Bros, and Pokemon Let's Go/Sword and Shield. Everything else is basically a bonus after that. Legend of Zelda, Mario Kart, Mario Party maybe, new Animal Crossing.

It's all about how badly you want to play Nintendo games.

I have the first generation Switch, and I love it, BUT... the battery life is HORRIBLE. And it takes forever to get a full charge. The newer switches and the second generation are better, but the battery life still leaves a lot to be desired.

The Switch is great if you are traveling and have to stay at a hotel. Instant entertainment Newer aircraft now have power outlets so you can play for the entire flight! It's great for traveling.

Honestly so many of the big games come out on it now.

You will probably want a pro controller at some point. Witcher 3?
Darksouls remastered?

Hyperlight drifter, rogue legacy, dead cells..

Pick your poison,

Apologies for butting in on someone else’s thread, but what is the usual pricing for the games? I’ve noticed a couple of places selling copies of most games for around 79.99$ CAD.

Depends on the games. They range from 15.00- 60.00 USD depending. Witcher 3? 60. Terreria? 20.
