having finally dragged myself over the finish line for Gotham, mostly out of a bloody minded see how it ends; dogma, although it pretty much ended as I guessed sans an actual Bat-Signal

I'm wondering if other Dakka'ers have stuck with stuff purely for this reason, or how bad does a show have to get before you quit ?

Vikings got kind of bad toward the end of season 4. But then season 5 was a whole new level of bad. We still made it through half the season, but then, once something else we wanted to watch came along we never went back.

We also tried watching Good Omens, while it was entertaining in parts, I literally could not stay awake for a full episode. Never bothered to finish it.

I'm generally OK with some "bad" elements if the thing in question is still entertaining, at least somewhat. Once it fail to be entertaining though, it's time to move on.

I'm trying to think back, but this might have been the straw that broke my back on finishing shows I started. I definitely finished it and it was definitely not worth it.

I feel more likely to give up on things these days than I used to. If I start letting something queue up and don't take the time to watch it I clearly don't care that much. If I like a show enough to get caught up in the first season, I'll probably finish that season. Once the quality starts to dip I find I tend to give it two more before giving up on it.

I used to go to the bitter end, but there are so many more options out there now, that I mostly choose to walk away rather than hatewatch. Though maybe I’ll come back for a finale, but I rarely do. Once I emotionally divest from the characters, I’m done.

For me, I’ll drop a show the second it loses focus on its central, primary premise. Once a show branches out from the original premise that drew me in, I check out. I think I learned how to spot that moment from watching The Sopranos regularly. Some shows get to a point where some or all elements involved need/want to prolong its life, which is perfectly natural and I completely understand if its lucrative for the parties in question. Gotta pay them bills! But I don’t have to watch.

I remember giving up on Walking Dead when the survivor group got bigger and they gave The Governor one or two solo episodes. I thought he was an interesting antagonist, but not more interesting than the original group of survivors that I had grown to love in the 3(4?) seasons preceding that. Shortly after that I noticed the shows formulaic nature and gave up on it.

Sons on Anarchy lost me when they moved away from the Hamlet-esque premise of the first season into the “This seasons villain” storyline for the next few years. I’m told it got better by the end, mainly because it returned to the original story arc it seems, but by then it was too late for me.

Homeland lost me around season 2 I think and I honestly forget why now that I think about it. Its apparently still going at season 7?

But nowadays I’m more excited about “limited series” as by its nature, it won’t overstay its welcome. Maybe be a bit bloated, but I know where the finish line is as soon as I start the race. True Detective season 1 and 3 are the best examples of that formula, with season 2 maybe being the worst example. One off season storylines like Fargo also spring to mind as well.

@ nels1031

fair point on all those shows you mentioned, have a vague theory that sometimes show quality slips chasing the syndication episode count, or just the tendency to flog something popular for so long it reaches the 'not what it was or was meant to be' point

The Flash.

I know that comics go on for years, and characters come, go and get killed off to come back later.
Season arcs are a big thing in most shows, so we could handle them.
But, that show, with all of the tie-ins, we got to S4 ep3, I think.

I liked that season where the villain was a rival speedster who secretly was someone Barry looked up to as a mentor.

I was going to say Game of thrones, but i have yet to see the final episode
I was going to say Star Wars rebels, but I gave up on that.
I was going to say My Little Pony(Yeah, I used to be a brony, a few people here may remember that) but I gave up on the show.

However there is one.
Steven universe. After the show killing all good will it built up too with constant Hiatuses, horrible lessons and redeeming space nazis, the final episode throwing any idea of a final bad guy away, it ruined it.
The movie looked like itm ight redeem the show, and it did for a bit, but the show still sucks

Wording it as "someone Barry considered family" would have probably encompassed the entire series.

I stopped watching after Salizar. Mostly because I mentally replaced that entire reveal with:
"Hey, Barry"
"Hey, Other Barry"
and so on.

I gave up when Barry refused to kill The Thinker when he had several opportunities.
Dude is trying to destroy the world, killing is fine Barry.

Since we are on comic book show adaptations...

I watched all of season 1 of Iron Fist.

Punisher season 2 started out ok but really became a crawl near the middle and I almost didn't care if I finished but I persevered.

Amidst the mists and coldest frosts he thrusts his fists against the posts and still insists he sees the ghosts.

I never finished season 2. Not enough Punisher doing Punisher things.
