I've recently got the GPs & Oblits from the Shadowspear set to add to my CSM collection, which includes 1 Chaos marine Troop + at least 1 "Special" for every Legions. I am also working on 1 Chaos bolter Marine from each of the Renegade Warbands with rules.

But here's my question. I already have 1 Possessed as the Word Bearer "special" and an Obliterator as the "special" for Iron Hands.
Here is a photo of most of my collection so far:
Spoiler:

So I don't really need any more "specials" and kinda want the GPs and Oblits to stand apart (similar to how my Primaris stand apart from my "All Chapters Marines and are all Death Watch and/or Blood Ravens). I've narrowed my preferrences down to Alpha Legion or Black Legion. I already have my tank and DP as BL, so I'm kinda torn whether to just lean into that, since EVERYTHING I have could be BL (they all have a left shoulder painted black to tie them together). Or do something different with the AL scheme (which I find more interesting)

Thoughts?

GW:"Space marines got too many options to balance, therefore we decided to legends HH units."
Players: "why?!? Now we finally got decent plastic kits and you cut them?"
Chaos marines players: "Since when are Daemonengines 30k models and why do i have NO droppods now?"
GW" MONEY.... erm i meant TOO MANY OPTIONS (to resell your army to you again by disalowing former units)! Do you want specific tyranid fighiting Primaris? Even a new sabotage lieutnant!"
Chaos players: Guess i stop playing or go to HH.

That's not bad. I originally was thinking of the GPs and Oblits being difference schemes, but then I started wanting to focus.
I like the idea of AL Oblits since they have nice big armour sections to use my technique of painting metallic blue with a green wash. It's just...I don't see Oblits and immediately think AL. Oblits are more Iron Warriors/BL and maybe Word Bearers. But the AL paint scheme is certainly one of my favorites

it if helps my black legion greater posessed is one of my best looking minis. Black can be annoying to do but if you get it it really looks sharp

if you want to keep doing a "display mix" you could branch out into major renegade factions such as red corsairs etc

I find black to be relatively easy to do well, but it's...boring. But it does tie my collection together, so that's the appeal for me. I'm leaning pretty hard toward at least making the GPs BL, especially since they are a new unit and not something "classic" like the rest of my stuff.

I don't really want to branch out too much. I want to have at least 1 model for every chapter/legion/warband that has rules and only the original 18 legions get the "1 troop + 1 special" treatment.
I also really what to experiment with scales on an AL scheme, so I'll probably do the Oblits as AL.

Al is anything.
They are probably and were probably the most disciplined and adaptable marines there are.
They use all tools including mercenaries. I'd imagine that the obliterator cult due to their versatility would very much be liked amongst diffrent cells in conjunction of their mobility if a plan goes south.

Also i hope you meant iron warriors instead of hands.

Yes, I did. And thanks for the feedback. It's looking more and more like BL GPs and AL Oblitz are going to be the final result

yeah problem with black is shading etc. although I've found a drybrush of eshen grey works great at making everything pop

My solution is to drybrush/highlight with a very light grey/white and I have a black mixed with Lahmean Medium (so a wash) that I just use over the whole area.
My custom wash is thick/opaque enough that it darkens the light grey, but translucent enough to let some peak though as an edge highlight.

But looking at the results, at the time of this post, AL have 11 votes and BL have 7. That's enough to the Oblitz to definitely be Al at this point but I'm still planning the GPs to be BL.
