So I've been having a bit of a hobby refresh and having sold off a bunch of stuff to replace with new things I've come to the last few purchases and can't make my mind out. So I thought why not ask the good/mad/insane/crazy/fanatics of Dakka for some help in the choice!

What's on the table:
1) Put the money into more Ossiarchs. Probably a Liege Kavalos and more Deathriders; or perhaps a second trebuchet. No fixed ideas just general expand the force thoughts. As most of the money I've just regained has gone onto starting an Ossiarch force this would make the most sense. However at the same time it runs the risk of overloading myself with way too many "new" things all in the same slot which can backfire into a mountain of plastic that saps the will to challenge it.

2) A Forgeworld Keeper of Secrets. I've got a slaanesh force with no keeper and I've had my eye on the massive resin one for years. It's only detracting point is the lack of a tail (and perhaps the madness of sticking all those spikes on). Otherwise it looks pure awesome (and who knows I might manage to find a spare plastic tail from the main kit). As a single purchase this is the most expensive and pretty much clears up all the spare money. Which I've found is always the issue with FW purchases of this kind; they are impressive, highly desirable but often when push comes to shove they are still darn expensive for a single model. What might be a whole stampede of Ossiarch Deathriders or a Fleet of Scourge is one mighty, dominating resin monster of war.

3) Scourge Fleet for Dropfleet Commander. Firestorm Armarda and Gothic are both dead in the water games at present; though both have potential to return its likely not for years for both (in fact it wouldn't surprise me if Gothic gets there first with the speed that Warcradle has had with returning Dystopian Wars). Having just sold off my Gothic ships (and never liking the Tyranid models that GW made for that range anyway) I've a thought to getting some scourge so that I've some ships around from space. The only major downside here is that it is starting ANOTHER project and army when I've several on the go already. Though it is a change from AoS/GW and 28mm infantry/monster games.

4) Save it - a dangerous term as I find money saved can easily become money gone when its casual hobby money and not being set aside for something more serious. Esp at this time of year!

So come one and all, vote, chat, share your ideas. What would you do? Would you do something else entirely perhaps or maybe you've a strong thought or two on these choices or experiences of your own. Horror stories of FW resin or glorious stales of alternative (to GW ) rules systems etc...

I jumped deep into the Deathguard when they came out all new and shiney, and, amazingly i'm still working away on them and haven't got bored and wandered off to do something else and they're still my main focus

so if you really like the bone reapers that does make sense

as to the KoS, are you in the mood to assemble and paint it right now? If not it's going to go in a box, it's going to be a pain to clean up and build (resin + FW) compared to a normal plastic kit so unless you're really buzzing about getting it done it's likely to languish and never get finished

Spaceships? spaceships are cool, (I favour the UCM look) I've thought about getting some (especially when i'm at a show), but never done it, not quite sure why

(I've actually got a lot of metal ships from ICEs Silent Death and FASAs Interceptor that I've been meaning to paint since the late 90s and haven't.... maybe that's why I didn't get the dropfleet ships, or spartans halo stuff which I also liked, I subconsciously know i'll never do anything with them)

Saving, if you've got somewhere special to hide hobby money from yourself not a bad idea (maybe bonereapers will get cheaper by the time you've done a bunch of the other ones you've got), but if it's in a general account it's going to get frittered away on bills, coffee, Xmas presents, unexpected expenses etc

Scourge fleet, the dropzone models are all amazing and you won't regret it. A metallic spray and some colour washes and those things basically paint themselves.

it's the quiet ones you have to look out for. Their the ones that change the world, the loud ones just take the credit for it.

Hey look, a diversion!

Okay, so, just for funsies...some questions:

1) Which are you most passionate about? Are you passionate enough about each of these purchases to actually build/paint/field them, or will they end up in the pile of shame in two months time?

2) Which game do you play the most, and would get you the most use of your purchase?

3) Do you already have a nice mat/terrain, etc. for the games you play? Nothing says lame like spending more money on models if you don't have a proper table to play them on. Terrain is the third army and the most often neglected.

4) Same question about hobby materials. Do you possess all the brushes, paints, sprays, primers, tools, lights etc. to properly paint and finish the stuff you want to buy? A lot of people likewise skimp on the actual hobby components. Having a proper desk/tools/paints/brushes can make a huge difference in your productivity.

5) Give any of your choices the 2-3 week test. Don't buy anything and then see if you still want it in a few weeks. See if the sudden shine has worn off.

PS: As an actual answer? I'd say anything but the Forgeworld model. Their quality is not justified at all by the price they ask.

Personally there is nothing better than the appeal of starting a brand new army, and those Ossiarchs are brilliant. They're not quite TKs but GW has done a good job of making them a unique looking army.

The KoS is a nice model but like anything else with Forgeworld it comes with the prohibitive price and the fact you have to deal with FW's resin. Excommunicatus here on Dakka did a build of one on his blog and it turned out pretty nicely. Worth a look if you're interested.

I can't give any input on the Dropfleet army but if you fancy another game system and don't mind investing in it then go for it!

Saving money is always an option, but if you feel you really want something, sit on your cash for a little bit and come back to it and see if you still want to buy what you want. If not, then you have cash to save. It's what I did with my Exodites, spent a lot of time researching and making lists, potential conversions and I finally bit the bullet and I'm happy with that decision!

I'd say , SAFE it, but with the addendum that you reinvest in your force off ossiarchs when you have finished that start and got some matches in.
Basically to allow you to gouge betterwhat you want to field / build.

Alternatively you could go for a small theme Army.

GW:"Space marines got too many options to balance, therefore we decided to legends HH units."
Players: "why?!? Now we finally got decent plastic kits and you cut them?"
Chaos marines players: "Since when are Daemonengines 30k models and why do i have NO droppods now?"
GW" MONEY.... erm i meant TOO MANY OPTIONS (to resell your army to you again by disalowing former units)! Do you want specific tyranid fighiting Primaris? Even a new sabotage lieutnant!"
Chaos players: Guess i stop playing or go to HH.

This isn't a distraction, its a carefully calculated means of shifting buyer guilt and remorse onto you guys

1) Can't answer it. I've far too active an imagination; I can get just as easily wound up in the theme and lore of so many forces.

2) Well the Warhammer for certain but that's almost a given for most model wargame choices that aren't historical

3) A good point, but I'm not allowed any more terrain till I get my warcry stuff done otherwise I'll just bury myself in that!

4) Kinda, I keep thinking about messing with an airbrush but I honestly need to do more regular brushwork otherwise its jsut an expensive toy that won't see much actual real use.

As for the 3 week thing I've sort of had that already. I've actually taken Beastgrave off the list that I've got for now as that did start on the list. It sits there as a "there's only 5 or so models to actually build/paint to get it working" argument; plus it gives me an excuse to get more of those Dragon Shield Art card protectors (which just look all kinds of awesome).

Forgeworld wise I've already got a warpfire dragon, malanthrope and some wolfrats. So I've experience of their resin and working with it; it doesn't phase me and I've been more than happy with all three of those purchases (and if I stick to rats I'd want more of those wild wolfrats).

What's on your painting table?

How many models do you have unpainted?

Save money and use it as a reward after you complete an army. I'm waiting to play around wtih the 3d printer and the proxxon I have until I finish my Iron hands (around 3-4 weeks left of work) so I'm not touching or ordering anything else until I finish the army I have on my queue

I say get the big model.
My reasoning: I too get bogged down with "too much stuff" and the mountain of plastic and paint.
You need good character / showcase models to "reward" yourself when you get a difficult task done.

I painted some 30 space marines to a good standard, I get to paint Calgar.
Paint the 5 vehicles I need done, get to paint Guilliman.

I find if you have some centerpiece you can afford to spend the time on, it makes all that other stuff you slaved over look all that much better.
Plus you now have a very real threat of fielding that model on your friends which they both love/hate to see.

My best answer

Bit of a comprimise...

Get the plastic Keeper of Secrets as it looks much better than the more expensive Forgeworld version, and keep the change for Christmas. Win-win situation if you ask me...

Save it!

You don't appear to have strong enough convictions to outright buy the items you list, so I would suggest you hold onto the money until the right choice makes itself clear.

Besides, it'll give you time to tackle that pile of shame you have lying around ... admit it, we ALL have one.
