Hi.

I have unearthed a large pile of LOTR figures, they came with a magazine quite a few years ago now.

I can identify many minis from the GW site, but many of the Heroes such as the fellowship are different minis to what I see on the GW page.

Any ideas, did they change/update them and are the older ones rare?

Hi

Yes they have.
There have been a lot of sculpts only released with the magazine and some limited to OOP box sets.

I was fortunate to receive someone's collection and I think I have at least 3 variations of Gimli and Legolas lol

Some are rarer than others and some are hard to get hold of..
You can use this collectors wiki to find out more about the sculpts. There was a lot of them!

P.S.
If you have a sleeping Frodo and sam and want to trade let me know. I have the golum on a rock but no sam or Frodo for a display piece

Thanks for that. I can indeed see some of the figures on those pages(dont think I have the sleeping Frodo though)

Is it worth me putting images of the ones I have up to see if they are rare etc or is it not really worth it in terms of their value?

Ebay is your friend for that. Find the mini you have and see what its selling for on ebay.

The lotr stuff isint as pricey as say vintage whfb dogs of war units..

Feel free to post photos of the models here and I'll happily ID them. I'm pretty sure I have the entire LOTR range committed to memory forever...

See I thought I did too and then I came across this Hama, and I cannot for the absolute life of me, place him to a specific set or general release.

Do you know where he's from?

Battle Games in Middle-Earth (same idea as the current Warhammer Conquest). Issue 53 was Hama and came with that model. The passive one of him with his arm out came from Defenders of Rohan, but I'm fairly certain this one only came in BGiME as I can't remember ever coming across it for sale in a blister and he certainly was never in any boxed set.

Alongside Gamling, they're a nice pairing to have alongside Theoden!

Ah beautiful. Thanks Oppl!
I suspected that he might have been from the SBG partworks, but had no real way of confirming it. He was certainly never available in shops.
Maybe you can tell me if there was a special release armoured Eowyn as well? I think she may have been been in a running attack pose.

There were four models of Eowyn - three armoured and one unarmoured. The rarest is the one from Final Fate of the Witch King with her shield above her head - that's probably the one you're thinking of. Then you've got the armoured version where she's holding her sword by her head, which you got in Fall of the Witch King and the other where she is more passive with her sword down and helmet in hand. That was the general release model which came in the two figure blister with her mounted variant.

Then of course there was the unarmored version which you could get in Defenders of Helm's Deep.

This is before the plastic set GW released this year of course.

There's actually 5 metal versions of Eowyn, if you count the Death of Gothmog vignette where she's crawling along the ground!

I figured out which one I was looking at. It was the one where she has her sword raised. The picture I was looking at was mirrored, so it had me confused.

Here's a big collector's guide with all versions of various character together (yes, there have been many versions of some over the years!): https://drive.google.com/file/d/1VTuwGfQX2vjX-gQj5jmE929jXVEnDYIa/view

To what extent some of the Battle Games figures are rare depends on many factors. The series was pretty popular, so it's not uncommon for the versions included with the magazine to be among the most common ones on the second-hand market. In some cases, the same figures were initially included in a box (e.g. Defenders of Helm's Deep), then later once again in separate blister. In other cases, they were never released outside of the magazine, or only rarer sets. And then of course, some bits are simply much more sought after than others.
