So I'm getting in a trade some 30k models. Iron Hands specifically. I've never owned 30k models, these are my first. I've always loved 30k/the Horus Heresy. The books are riveting. I should have bought Betrayal at Calth but I didn't, like an idiot. But I always had trouble with picking a legion. The age old question of: "Above all else, to what Legion do you owe fealty?"

So I was reading a bit on that weird site we all go on 1d4chan where people have written articles about 30k, the legions, their background (in a more digestible writing style) and their playstyle on the tabletop.

There were remarks mixed in about how IH are the "oft forgotten legion" and I mused why that is. And I think it's because between the quite drab colors, lack of impactful models and primarch who is rather... Forgettable. The Iron Hands are rather nondescript in a setting of high drama, larger than life characters and Titanic battles.

This is. Disappointing to say the least. Because I think to me, the Iron Hands represent the aspect of the Legiones i most enjoy. Hardened resolve and discipline, slow implacable advances, overlapping fields of fire, mechanized infantry, tanks that go boom, no-nonsense protective armor and cyborgs and mechanicum toys to boot. I can take or leave the Scottish vibes that were more emphasized in 40k.

I always glossed over Iron Hands (I was prey to "forgetting" this legion exists as well) and I think it in part to their rather dull appearances. I was always drawn to striking legions like the bright red Blood Angels, deep purple Emperor's Children, sinister blues and reds of the Night Lords, or the shifting blue-green of the Alpha Legion. And all of their awe-inspiring Primarchs. But I was always a bit thrown by their wacky personalities and quirks of warfare.

So now I ask you, loyal legionnaires of the Adeptus Astartes, what draws you to your chosen Legion, and why?

I have 2 Legions; Raven Guard and Word Bearers. Both for completely different reasons.

For the Raven Guard, I've always liked the reasonable, 'realistic' Legions who are capable of fighting in a semi-believable way. On that basis I narrowed it down to the Ravens, Ultramarines and Iron Hands.
RG: I love the infiltration, assassination, spec-ops and general sneakiness. I also appreciate that they are idealistic and generally nice guys, but not above nukes and Moritat if the situation calls for it. They are pragmatic without being cruel and I love them for it.
UM: They are just so sensible. I love the mechanics of linking fire, combined arms and the blue scheme is beautiful. I also find Suzerains to be some of the best models in the game.
IH: I like the attitude of having the kit, grit and sheer bloody-mindedness to just bulldoze the enemy. They have clearly come to do a job and they are going to do it; it's just so pure.

Ultimately I chose Raven Guard because I think Infiltrate is the best rule in the game. There is an elegance to having the same basic kit, without any special dice modifiers or killy rules, but having them exactly when and where they are needed. Having that level of control over how the game will start is just wonderful. And it also provides a tremendous amount of depth to your tactics; Turn 1 rushes, bedding into cover, massed Outflanks, or just avoidance. Every game is potentially different and you have so much control over the board, even if your actual game pieces are nothing special.
I also find it oddly refreshing to have them post-Massacre because the Legion is so small, it provides more of a framework to create background. You have more limitations about who your guys are, where they have been and what they are capable of, but at the same time have relatively little Black Library material to work with.

On the traitor side, it was between Word Bearers, Sons of Horus and World Eaters. Ultimately I decided I did not want to source 100+ Chainaxes, and I preferred Daemons to Terminators. I've loved Lorgar ever since First Heretic and just love the background for them. And sometimes it's just nice to play the bad guy without trying to dress it up with ulterior motives.

I think the reason Iron Hands are oft-forgotten is because they get knocked out of the Heresy as a unified Legion very early on. They show up at the first real clash between Loyalist and Traitor Legions (not including Istvaan III, as that was between loyalists and traitors of the same Legions), get their Primarch killed, and have their strength broken for most of the Heresy. The same largely happens for Raven Guard and Salamanders - sure, they all pull off some pretty awesome stuff, but as a Legion, they don't really get the time to shine, and Ferrus is unfortunately best known for being the redshirt, the first to die.

Still, I think there's one Legion even more forgotten - the White Scars - which is a criminal shame given how good their stories are. They don't show up at any of the big major setpiece battles (save for Terra, and the aftermath of Prospero), they don't kill another Primarch, and, as per their own character, prefer not to stay in the limelight and would rather do their own thing.

For me, I play Ultramarines. Now, I actually play Ultramarines in 40k too, but that's actually not the main reason I did Ultramarines in 30k. In fact, I was actually being put off doing 30k Ultramarines for that exact reason - I already did Ultramarines! But the Ultramarines Legion just appealed to me all the same - the colour scheme is solid and pleasing, their greco-roman design cues, their Breacher Squads looking awesome, Guilliman being one of the better lookin Primarchs IMO, Invictarus Suzerain Squads looking stunning, and I really like their rules as a Legion - all about the army working as a combined force, and even their weaknesses of relying on their officers!

Their fluff is some of my favourite in the Heresy (Calth and the Shadow Crusade are pretty awesome), and while they're not actually at Terra, them being this big vengeful relief force on the horizon causing Horus some big concern is fun to see. Guilliman is a pretty cool guy as a Primarch, actually having some pretty good character moments and motivations. Being the largest Legion, you really do get to have a bit of fun with your guys - they can be spread out across the galaxy, and can really specialise into whatever niche you want!

Basically, I ran with 30k Ultramarines because, even though I wanted something different from my normal Ultras, they just ticked every box for me again and again. Worth noting are my other Legion contenders - Imperial Fists (which I'll eventually make a Breacher-heavy, Cataphractii shielded Stone Gauntlet for!), Night Lords (chainglaives are cool, and they're just a fun bad guy Legion), and Iron Warriors (again, shield heavy, and easier to paint!)

Iron Warriors for me, the primary reason is I like the idea that they can wade right into enemy fire, take casualties and keep pressing on without morale being affected outside of combat. Then again I run a made up legion that uses iron warriors rules, but the core is basically being implacable and able to take attrition while still functioning and taking ground. Absolute badass primarch also helps, perturabo is awesome, total maverick.

For me, it's nostalgia. At least at first.

18 Legions to choose from, and I can really get on board with just about all of them to be honest. So, the deciding factor was that Space Wolves were my first 40K army way back about 20 years ago. As it was my first army as a pre-teen, I never really got the chance to do them justice and eventually moved onto other armies. As was the way of things back then, I sold off most of my stuff (or it got damaged beyond repair).

Always loved the Wolf aesthetic, and I really liked the more grim and toned down direction that Dan Abnett took with them in the Horus Heresy. For whatever their flaws, I really like them now - as I did back when I was a kid - and I've got more of a sense of 'ownership' over my Space Wolves than I do any other legion because of it.

For my second legion - Iron Warriors - I've always really liked the idea of that they're not especially enthused with the Chaos Gods, but that they're instead closer to evil Space Marines. I like to play them with a kind of Vanilla Legion approach - a greater emphasis on standard Legion Tactical Squads and Terminators, a tendency towards artillery and ranged combat and a focussed, uniform (and almost 100% helmeted) approach to what power armour mark I employ (as opposed to kitting different squads with different armour marks depending on their battlefield roles with my Wolves), which gives them a completely different look and play style to my Space Wolves. Where my Wolves are incredibly individualistic, with a more unique and specialised style of warfare, I generally build my Iron Warriors armies to be a little more all-rounded with a little mobility in the form of Legion Land Speeders, Rhinos and Deep Strike - and a little bit of artillery for punch instead of as many close combat units.

I'm honestly not sure that IW would've been my first Traitor choice if I didn't play Space Wolves, but they're a wonderful antidote when I want to switch gears.

I play Wolves because they were what first got me into Warhammer 30/40k and I love the idea of myth being used to teach through metaphor and the using it as a cover for how smart they can be. The playstyle of quickly moving across the board and just smashing through the enemy is simple and fun.

The second Legion I picked was Death Guard because of all the Traitors I like their story one of the most and the Reaping playstyle worked well for me because I can gunline it and use a baneblade.

I initially intended on painting my forces as Thousand Sons. Reasoning being that I could use them in 30k, as a custom chapter in 40k, or as Thousand Sons in 40k. I also initially gravitated towards them due to my initially interpreting their fall as being close to a Greek tragedy.

What changed that was an apparent need to buy Tzaangors for 40k Thousand Sons and me re-interpreting their fall as being their own fault (and my not liking Magnus' behavior during the Fall of Prospero).

As far as aesthetics, the remaining choices were Iron Warriors, Luna Wolves, White Scars, Blood Angels, Imperial Fists, and Ultramarines. White Scars and Blood Angels would have required a complete restructuring of what I had, Imperial Fists and Luna Wolves would have been difficult schemes. While I like the cold logic of the Iron Warriors, they did a few things that were unnecessarily brutal. Ultramarines I figure are numerous enough that I wouldn't be too upset losing. plus, I got a scheme that is super simple.

There was a time before the internet that I genuinely thought that when people were saying Iron Hands they were messing up Iron Warriors and Imperial Fists. Even White Dwarf never mentioned them so I didn’t know they existed

My Legion? Well, I wanted to make 30k a hobbying project for me to put my all into as a first priority. I decided to pick a Legion that o could add a lot of character to in conversion, paintwork and theme, and a colour scheme I could add a little creative interpretation to (not much room for that with Ultramarines or Sons of Horus for example). My favourite scene of the heresy is Curze saving Lorgar on Istvaan, it’s set up and delivered so perfectly. Also a ton of other scenes as Curze is just so entertaining. Plus, I haven’t yet seen a Night Lord army that truly blew me away, so I wanted to try make it. So you can probably see where this is going. Ave Dominus Nox.

Bonus points for their conflicts with Raven Guard and Salamanders both. These are the two legions I felt would look best slaughtered for base fodder, so that was a big plus.

I won’t say it was an easy decision, I still sometimes look enviously at Alpha Legion, Thousand Sons, and The Rout, but all three I felt just lacked a little on the aesthetic freedom offered by the 8th. Plus I like the playstyle a lot more.

i was drawn to Death Guard for alot of reasons.

In my oppinion they have some of the most interesting aspects of Astartes lore.

Their Homeworld is rough, so they are suppose to adapt, and be able to fight in the harshest enviornments in the galaxy.

They welcome challenges, which in my oppinion has to make them the hardest bunch of all astartes legionaries.

They dont excell in flawless execution like the Emperors children, Insidious tacticis like the Alpha Legion or Siege warfare like the Iron warriors.

Their specialty is being tough, and fighting as dirty as necesary to win the day.

Mortarion is an interesting Primach, whose motive for joining Horus in his war against the false emperor, is not as straith forward as Angrons, and not as complicated as Fulgrims.

Plus.. lets face it.. a guy in a robe, wielding a fething Scythe is just bad ass.

I fell in love with the Death Guard, the moment i heard Mortarions introduction in "Galaxy in flames", as well as their behaviour and style in "Flight of the Eisenstein".

I like modeling so I chose Alpha Legion because they can take any single entry from another legion. This gives me some fun modeling opportunities and I like how I can model a “secret” Alpharius/Omegon from regular marines. I have a bunch of plastic bodies so an infantry based army is good for me.

Where to even start with this lol. Way back before any FW kits or rules I wanted to do a Heresy era army. I went with Dark Angels as that was my army in 40k so it made sense. I never got beyond a few squads and moved on to other projects.

When FW released the Red Scorpion MK IV armor, I went back to my Heresy idea and went with Space Wolves this time. I got a decent army started but kinda fell off with 40k in the 5th/6th era and got into Warmachine.

WM was good and all, but never really scratched the 40k itch. Around this time, FW released the first Black Book and I was hooked again. I really missed Chaos Marines and figured why not go with the originals and start the Word Bearers. The newly released Gal Vorbak helped make my choice lol. A very healthy 30k community at my FLGS helped a lot too.

After the WB, I wanted to do a bigger modeling project and The Rout caught my eye again. The freedom of the VI Legion is amazing. So much conversion potential! The WB went on hold and the Rout took over. I ran them for 2-3 years and had a great time with the playstyle and army.

After that I wanted something less individualistic and wanted to revisit one of my first armies with the Iron Warriors. So I got them ready for Adepticon last year.

Through all this, I realized I jumped around a lot to say the least. If only there was one army that would represent all the different ways I like to play. A, precursor to all of them if you will. Bonus points that it was my first army from 40k 3rd edition and my first Heresy project. Enter the 1st Legion.

Wondering Why the Emperor Left

My decision was a combination of rules, fluff, and "feel.' The decision was between World Eaters, Sons of Horus, and Alpha Legion. I chose the Alpha Legion because they differentiated from my already existing armies while still presenting an interesting playstyle. My Black Legion already did the "Tip of the Spear Terminator Assault," and my main motivator for picking them was I love their primarch, but my least favorite form of playing 30k is Primarch-hammer.

I dismissed World Eaters because while I love the original pre-Heresy color scheme, I detested the idea of sourcing that many chain-axes and the play-style seemed monotonous: charge, kill, repeat. Again, a love for Angron made me reluctant, because I knew that I didn't want to play an army that promoted a Spartan filled with terminators.

So I chose Alpha Legion. I simultaneously picked them because I found myself writing lists without Alpharius and not feeling like I'm missing out, I found myself using mostly Betrayal at Calth models to make the list so affordability was a plus, and I found myself attracted to a playstyle that my local meta dismissed as sub-optimal (rhino rush) and thus was unique to me. Combine it with the fascinating interaction between dedicated transports and Mutable Tactics, and I was hooked. Infiltrating Land Raiders!!

Just models for me. I picked the legion I liked the full range for. Would have been world eaters originally (although I am doing them now) but I can't stand the Angron or rampager models. Couldn't go with Death Guard as not a fan of the Mortarian model. Then the iron circle models were unveiled, and I immediately decided on Iron Warriors, which turned out to be a great choice, being relatively easy to paint, and their rules lend themselves well to a very wide range of play styles and lists.

I'm drawn to Sons of Horus by color scheme ("the green of a distant sea"), lore, and the particular flavor of arrogance that typifies their attitude. They're "First Among Equals," they "Fight for the Living, Kill for the Dead"--there is a sense of superiority about them that doesn't stem from the pursuit of perfection as in the case of the Emperor's Children, but instead from a sense of brotherhood--that notion of "egotisme a deux" that we see in real life all around us, where members of groups can play off one another's egotism to create a collective notion of being the best. The whole notion of the 'sons of horus' originally being an appellation for those Luna Wolves who most visibly bore a resemblance to the warmaster is exactly what makes them so wonderfully arrogant and fun to play. Abaddon is a bit over the top, but little Horus was always my favorite character from the books. The Sons of Horus are also the least 'chaosy' for lack of a better term. They're not one of the four legions devoted to a specific dark power, and unlike the Night Lords or Word Bearers, they don't exhibit extravagantly horrific aesthetics of demonic faces and bat wings, etc. They aren't the _First Heretic_ (that would be Erebus et al), but they're definitely the first traitors.

Now, it's a shame that they figure in only the first three books and then sort of fall off the map until _Vengeful Spirit_, but I guess that comes with the territory of being sort of a 'new' legion (in the sense that they aren't the Black Legion yet and the lore had to be built up from scratch for the Heresy novels). The authors writing for Black Library and the fans were desperate for Blood Angels, Dark Angels, Ultramarines, etc. after the first three books, so the Sons of Horus sort of fell off the map. It's also a shame that their rules are so limited in 30k, though it does give the opportunity to make unusual lists since the benefits granted by their Rites of War aren't *that* worthwhile that they force you into a particular build. This does, however, give them a lot of character--if you meet a Sons of Horus player, you'd better believe that he isn't a WAAC gamer or else he'd be playing a different legion!

Bloody great write up MKachen.

But to be fair, the Night Lords are far less Chaosy. They are just made to look scary. Horus had possessed as his personal bodyguard by about midway through the Heresy.

Also, BA barely get any presence in the series before Vengeful Spirit. Fear to Tread and the very rare cameo.

I picked the overlooked White Scars. I’ve always been fascinated by Ghenghis Khan and the Mongol conquests and have read several books on the topic. (Unfortunately, relatively little is recorded about the real Khan, as well as his 30k adaptation).

Some of the other reasons:
Deployment and movement are my favorite parts about the 40k/30k game. That’s where the tactics come in. Shooting and close combat is just target selection and dice rolling. So I love the units that shine in their deployment options and mobility. I’m not saying it’s the most effective or powerful in game terms, but for me, it’s the most fun.

And I enjoy their flavor. Tribal loyalty. Calmness. Respect. Enjoyment of combat (unlike some of the more dour Legions). Happy to do their part without seeking any glory or favor.

And of course, a unique aesthetic. As the only obviously Asian-inspired Legion, they get access to half the world’s major cultures for decoration, weapons, armor, etc. where many Legions share European aesthetics. It can be a bit odd to have samurai and Mongol themes in the same force but they are both awesome so I’ll overlook for the rule of cool.

Space Wolves.
I was drawn to their 30k look more than their 40k look so my 40k army is the 30k colour scheme and Mk3 armour with the trophies and wolfity wolf used sparingly whenever possible.
30k Space Wolves were monsters and the Emperor's Executioners before Russ came along with voices of compassion being few and far between, high collateral damage records that rivaled the War Hounds and serious attitude issues.

I don't break the rules but I'll bend them as far as they'll go.

"We fought with the Emperor as he united the Tribes of Terra by the sword. When he cast his gaze upon Luna and the Gene-Wights that ruled there, we fell on the moon, howling our determination and ferocity. We fought until Gene-Wight's lay low by our sword, their sorcery at an end. Though we suffered horrible loses, those who remained were honored by the Emperor when he bestowed the title "Luna Wolves" onto the Legion. When the Machines and their Masters would not bend the knee on Mars, we fell upon them. When it was over, the Machines were broken, and their Masters brought to the Emperor on their knees. At last, the Emperor was able to look to the stars, and great fleets were constructed. More brethren were added to our ranks. We spread across the Galaxy, bringing the Light of the Emperor to the darkest corners, and after the Fiery Sword, The Emperor's Peace followed. When our Primarch Horus Lupercal was restored to us, the Great Crusade began anew. Xenos, Mutant, those not wise enough to accept the Wisdom of the Emperor... all fell before us. At the height of the Great Crusade, the Emperor retired to his Great Work, and named Horus Warmaster of the Imperium. Thus was the Sons of Horus reborn. We carried on, and conquered the Galaxy in the name of Horus and the Emperor."

That is why I play the Sons of Horus.

I like this thread.

I was making my own Mechanicum army lists before the horus heresy was released so i wasn't really as hyped for the legions as i was for the Mechanicum despite their suggestion of a list that was enough for me to buy Thallax with every spare pound i could get my hands on.

Despite that i eventually bought myself some mk4s to fly around in the stormeagle i got for my homebrewed mechanicum armies and 'had to pick a legion'.
Literally couldn't decide thanks to being lazy and wanting them to fit in with my existing models and invented some head-cannon about a bunch of EC who were selected for techmarine training and had just finished the process of removing any legion iconography as part of the induction process but then get dragged back to isstvan aboard the Xerxes 9-7-7 because they are meant to die there etc, etc.

So was playing vanilla marines during book two, but after book three was released my interest was drawn to all things Ordo Reductor, (especially Calleb Decimas new after-Isstvan profile!) and the legionnaires got sidelined in favour of Thallax cohort expansion and requisitioning imperial vehicles which i was absolutely up for!

Anyway, book 6 gets released and up pops the 'Shattered Legions' and 'Blacksheilds' options which despite their weird setup i still kinda like but not enough to repaint things.

Time goes by and I was hunting for Ordo Reductor fluff and eventually somebody points me to the black library book 'Blacksheild' which sets up Calleb Decima as tooling around with a bunch of blacksheilds led by Crysos Morturg trying to seek out and assymilate any legionnaires from traitor legions who are still loyal to the big E despite their status being marked as 'complicated'.

So despite the points cost i just accepted that blacksheilds were going to be 'my legion' as it were and bought a bunch of mk3 to reinforce my vanilla marines and painted them to be blacksheilds but also to double as ravenguard when doing a shattered legion list.

My dudes aren't the most varied 'legion', certainly not great for the points and not even the most sensible force to play - but they are my dudes, protectors of the Artaxerxes 9-7-7 and techmarines in waiting if it weren't for the crushing PTSD.
Apart from the ex-EC dudes who are still in the 'denial' phase.

I was attracted to Word Bearers because of...Daemon Marines. Dark Channeling and Gal Vorbak, Daemon Dreadnoughts, Diabolists, etc.

I play the Chapter of the Void, whose Chapter leadership foresaw the demise of the Emperor and Lorgar, wanted to control Chaos rather than be enslaved by it, so used some techno-babble to escape to the Triangulum galaxy before the Heresy, where they are struggling to establish a new Empire amidst a Tyranid infested galaxy.

They use their time travel tech to return to the Milky Way galaxy to hunt for Marine gene seed, weapons, tech, etc. This gives me some fluff to make me comfortable playing 40k armies.

I'm dedicated to the Iron Warriors for a few reasons, first being they're pretty easy to paint! Second, I like their quality use of tanks and terminators, and not much ornament, just good straight forward steel and blasts. And also their use of robots like the Iron Circle and bonus Castellax or Thallax ones when there's a Cortex Controller around.

Third, I loved Angel Exterminatus and most especially when Perturabo's handi-works were described; he's a craftsman, but also an engineer. And fourth reason, I sorta empathize with the IVth's plight. They're asked to do s&%t work and they accept it with stalwart resolve and conquer no matter the cost....out of spite. Gotta respect that.

Fifth, modern Perturabo makes daemon-buildings.....for which I'm very hopeful someday we'll see in 40k along with his daemon-Primarch self and crazy fortification stuff.

“There is no enemy. The foe on the battlefield is merely a manifestation of that which we must overcome. He is doubt, and fear, and despair. Every battle is fought within. Conquer the battlefield that lies inside you, and the enemy disappears like the illusion he is.” - Rogal Dorn, Primarch of the Imperial Fists

On an Express Elevator to Hell!!

Back in the mid 00's the 'Pre-Heresy' thing was just getting off the ground with the TCG and then later art books. This was well before the Forge World miniature ranges and the official 30k rulebooks were well over the horizon. I think of the small but dedicated communities interested in it, the traitor legions were probably most popular. They gave the opportunity to try something new, if you think at that time the 40k universe had been static for some time.

I went for the World Eaters for a few reasons. Firstly, I loved the idea of them actually being a 'combined arms' type force and actually functioning, as part of the Great Crusade, in a somewhat believable manner. World Eater garrison troops, heavy weapon specialists or artillery loaders. How cool is that? Also, that they weren't really 'good guys' in the way that they waged war - blurring the line between the enlightening force of the Crusade and the barbaric methods employed to achieve it. They were also a bit easier to convert back in those days (there were a few more bits from 40k kits, chain axes and the like) that could be employed without needing massive amounts of green-stuff or real sculpting skills. Finally, a friend of mine said I always painted things too dark, so I was determined to go for something with a lighter scheme!

I think as well that the Iron Hands are seen as 'losers'. I know this sounds ridiculous dealing with an entirely fictitious universe, but I think especially with a lot of younger players they want to go with the force that is seen as the most powerful/heroic. The Iron Hands, being absolutely smashed at Istvaan (as well as being the first to have their Primarch die!) are the opposite end of this. Personally, that's actually what attracts me to them! It's a really interesting narrative and lots of potential modelling opportunities.
Think also not being one of the 'founder' marine names (not much coverage in 1st and 2nd ed.) they haven't got as much nostalgic appeal as some other legions.
Finally, I don't think the black colour scheme helps (in amongst the many other black colour schemes) and I remember at one point the lack of 'bits' and conversion components, certainly early on, didn't help.

Totally agree about White Scars, wonderful miniature range and one of the most character legions. I'm not sure if their lack of popularity is due to the colour scheme (white and red, and I think responds better to being accurate - unlike World Eaters or Death Guard that you can hide effectively with muck/blood or battle damage) or also that the army would get very expensive if you go with all official models, given the amount of bikes/jet bikes.
