Hello Dakka,

Thinking of getting into WWI wargaming, but wondering the scale and rules you prefer. Heard good stuff about "Mud & Blood" as well as "Price of Glory".

Ordered the Price of Glory rules, but waiting for them to come in. Do you like 28/25mm or smaller? How many models do you tend to use when playing? Thank you Dakka.

I think the coolest scale would be epic / corp scale. Maybe 2-6mm. You could really get an idea of the complexity of mobilization. Try not to deviate from the Schlieffen Plan as did the Germans at the time. Try not mobilize Russia in under 15 days. Stuff like that.

Down at the local shop we occasionally play Flames of War: Great War. It's 15mm.

Model count wise, depending upon pts used, my British (Canadian) army generally has:
40-50 bases of infantry in varying squads (counting rifles, mortars, machine guns, snipers, HQs, etc)
2 -3 field guns/cannon
2 armored HMG cars - always included as these models were why I built the force Canadian.
3 - 5 tanks (assorted Mark IVs, sometimes a MK V*, & Whippits - wich & how many really depend upon the pts lv of the game as the IVs & V are quite pricey)
This army plus it's tokens, cards, dice & a tape measure fit nicely in two foam trays from a Battlefoam Ammo Box bag. So very easy to transport.

2 things we've found:
1) There's no airplane rules.
Granted, ground attack planes weren't used much & were of limited effectiveness, but we'd still like to have them. Fortunately over on No Dice No Glory someones brewed up what looks to be a decent set of rules. We'll be giving those a try.
2) We think the game plays better at 150pts or maybe higher.
This is because the tanks are so expensive. Yes, it's supposed to focus on the infantry. And that's fine. But it looks really cool to see a couple of tanks in play & we want to use our models - wich is hard at 100pts & almost impossible below that. So our standard is 150 pts

You might also want to look at Contemptible Little Armies.

I also think there was a GW Historical game as well.

Oh wow. Great replies everybody. Going to have to look into those.

I read through the Price of Glory rules, and they seem great. It just seems their point system breaks down a bit once you get into the unit creation rules (as some of it is quite open to abuse if you get "gamey" with creating units).

If using the units set up that represent the major powers of WWI, the system really does look like a great way to go for platoon level combat in 28mm.

Going to keep browsing other systems, possibly even Flames of War. Really appreciate the responses here.

Great War Spearhead II for 6mm or smaller to simulate really big actions (your units are entire companies of soldiers).

I've been interested by Great Escape Games' 1914 rules, which has its own 12mm line of miniatures. It's intended to capture the early actions of the war before the trenches came, back when it was a conflict of maneuver.

Firelock Games, the company that made Blood & Plunder, is working on Blood & Glory (and the rulebook is up for preorder on their website with a release in January). It's meant for 28mm skirmishes.

We play WW1 in Mesopotamia and Palestine using "If the Lord Spares Us" which are from the same publisher as Mud and Blood, we use 28mm figures (lots of them). I find the variations of this part of WW1 (Camels, Armoured Cars, Trains etc) much more exciting than the standard trench slog of the Western Front.

Good luck with your new project
