Hi all!

I'm a long (long!) time 40k player and with the release of the Slaves to Darkness battletome, I'm finally going to take the plunge with AoS. However, creating an army and keywords and allies and interactions are giving me a bit of a headache so I wondered if you could help me creating the army I've always wanted.

I basically want to create a slaves to Darkness army with a mighty general leading all sorts of chaotic units. It seems however that I'm limited within matched play (the games I'll be playing regularly) by the allies rules meaning I can't really include all the units i want to legally while maintaining the Slaves to Darkness faction (please tell me also if I've got this all wrong).

However! If I'm correct, I could have an army under the "Chaos" keyword and basically include anything I want as a grand alliance. Am I correct in thinking that I can make a 2000 point army using units across all the battletomes, united by the "chaos" keyword at the cost of traits and abilities from these books, effectively using the grand alliance ones from the rulebook?

Sorry for the wall of text, this is brain vomit that I hope makes sense. Any help is really appreciated.

It can be done, but the loss of abilities really does hurt.

What are the units you are looking to add?
May be possible to get things in there still without any sacrifice.

There is a slight fear that the army would be rubbish to play but I'm genuinely more about creating a fun, visually fun force.

With regards to adding units, everything really - I want my powerful Lord and his warriors but I envisage him uniting warriors from all the gods, some blightkings here, a unit of blood reavers there, some tzaangor enlightened flying about the place and a few fiends running about. The allies point limit effectively puts a stop to that so the only way I can legally do it is to bypass it completely with a grand alliance.

Ah right, so just going for an old school chaos army.
As long as you aren’t pushing for purely competitive then it should work out fine.
May even be able to patch over the gaps in lists due to having such a big unit pool to choose from too.
