Hi Dakkanauts, I showed my 8 year old son a review of HeroQuest and his wee eyes lit up. So did mine. So I reckon it's dungeon crawlin time.

I've been looking and seeing a few for sale at various prices and varying levels of condition and completeness. If I'm trying to do this on a budget what do I need to know about buying a box set? Does anyone know if there's any part of the set that is harder to find than others? The miniatures aren't an issue I have plenty that I can use.

Or is there a better option for getting my boys gaming? What's the craic with Warhammer Quest? I don't know anything about that, Is that a similar or better option?

Was the review perhaps made by The Bard?

Because no one can want anything but play HeroQuest after watching his video, its one of Youtube's gems!

You could just get into Shadows of Brimstone which I recommend highly. It is honestly an improved, version of proper Warhammer Quest, if you like the Weird-West setting. It is proper co-op so you can help him out if needed, and the wealth of content is sick.

Plus it is in print so you won't be spending collector's prices.

Without encouraging piracy, there are openly available copies of the papers from the book.

From there, some graph paper and a print shop can take care of the paper products. There are even papercraft copies of the furniture that can be printed to cardstock.

Changing the dice over to X+ Rolls on a d6 is very simple.

If you have the models... it’s a relatively inexpensive option. Maybe $35 CAD for printing services?

It wasn't, no. But I've gone and rectified that now and watched The Bard's cracking reboxing video, which might itself be the greatest thing about Hero Quest. He's convinced me anyway.

And thanks GBT. I've decided I'd like to buy a game box though, probably one on the cheap and nasty end of the spectrum, but I've seen a few HeroQuest resource sites out there supplying all sorts of info and ideas, so yes, I agree it's reassuring to know I can make do and DIY whatever is missing. I want the board, the cards, the dice and as much of the furniture as I can get. Everything else I can probably make or replace myself easily enough. I'll not be dropping a hundred notes on a complete set.

Soulless - wierd west you say. I've a feeling my son would dig that but my collection features no Cowboys or steampunk brave-star horses. Aw, remember Brave Star? Strength of the Bear, Speed of the Puma! I know that's likely a far cry from Shadows of Brimstone but the kid loves zombies and wouldn't at all object to Cowboys Vs the unquiet dead. I'll look into that, thanks.

I introduced my boys (11 and 7) to Hero Quest, courtesy of my brother's old copy. I've since blown a hundred quid on my own decent-condition copy from eBay... Boys don't know about it yet, want to get it all painted first...

See, that's the kind of enthusiasm only a really quality game can inspire. I've never played Hero Quest but it just seems to have that reputation that makes me feel confident that even a playable but incomplete set for £50 would be well worth it.

I'm probably going to have to wait for the January payday but I'll keep yous updated on our progress. I might even have a dig around my collection and see what possible Hero Quest goodies I can pull together in the meantime.

It's a really well put-together game. We played it to death as kids - we had the first 3 expansions as well as the original game, and would have got the rest if we'd known about them at the time. The price of them now is eye-watering...

If you're buying incomplete, you probably want to concentrate on the rules and quest books, the board and the cards first, then scenery, then miniatures, then the dice. Character sheets are nice but you really only need to keep track of 2 stats and whatever items you have, a page of a notebook will do. Or there's probably printable sheets online.

The minis have a lot of character, but it's all pretty generic fantasy stuff that you could sub in from any number of different ranges. The dice are nice but you could just use standard D6s instead, albeit with a slight loss of atmosphere.

Well I'm not ashamed to say I totally went with this option! It's January, who has any spare cash in January?
So armed with a whiteboard and some printed cards we got to work.

Big success, what a great game!

So the real fun with HeroQuest has been making some characters based on my kids' favourite toys. I've been keeping a blog of it all over here.

But the character cards look like this.

There's a good few special character skills on the go too.

I'm not sure where it is, but someone also did a neoprene copy of the Hero Quest board - the rest of the components can easily be recreated, etc. There were also some companies doing alternate dice (different levels of monster dice, etc.). I enjoyed Hero Quest a lot, though I don't know how robust the game is. If you're going to eventually develop a stronger game, you'll just want Advanced Hero Quest or the original Warhammer Quest (which is really expensive to get proper).

Reaper Bones of course gives you options to replace almost all of the "necessary" miniatures.

Well you've seen my rescue shelter orcs and Paladins. And I've plenty of other miniatures that fit the bill already so minis are sorted.
Stickers on dice have sufficed for the combat dice and the old whiteboard while not as nice as the propper board is very versite and I can draw in doors and furniture and all so I have a playable system though it's all a bit... Rustic.

I've also been recreating my own set of funiture.

Plenty of bits from the bits box and some balsa for a nice big weapon wrack. Not quite done painting this yet but I'll post a pic of that when I'm done.

That's superb...and as someone who is in need of some weapon racks, I should probably do the same! You've inspired me. I even have a couple of the old Reaper weapon sets and a bunch of spare plastic sprues....excellent.
