Hey all, I'm trying to figure out how to paint some shades of grey for my kill team list inspired by metal gear.

What paint should I use for the two grays on this picture and what are some good methods of painting colors that are really close to each other and still have them stand out? I'm an experienced painter but am not familiar with citadel at all and my hobby store stopped carrying the paints I use.

First, painting isn’t finding the matched color and apply directly on like printing, it’s layered colors to get what you see.

You can start with black primer, watered down chaos black to cover miss primed areas, washed down skaven blige, let dry then dry brush on some dark-mid tone greys, like eshin grey, mechanicus grey, highlight with dry’ dawnstone; then the gadget/lens details.

I know how to paint but I paint hoards and sell them, I tend to mostly quick two coats and a dry-brush. This Kill Team is my chance to flex again and get back to doing a good job. Thank you for the advice on the colors to use! I want the army to look like an actual tactical assault force and I'm used to painting biker orks, Khorne, and bugs.

That grey has a tinge of blue in it. I would use something blue greyish. Vallejo Model Color makes a nice grey/blue called French Mirage (70.900) and you can darken it using black or lighten it using white, if needed. I know you asked about Citadel paints, but for that color, I like the Vallejo better, not only for coverage, but also for consistency. Some of the Citadel greys dry very grainy even when using a wet palette.

Not sure if this helps, but I'm experimenting with three different grays on my assassins for this month's painting contest. I still have all of the detail work ahead of me, but I snapped a photo last night. I can't promise perfect parity because two models were undercoated in gray and one in black, and my lights are pretty bad for photography, but maybe you can get an idea. This is with a spray basecoat, a couple thin coats of one of the grays, and the same Nuln Oil shade on all three.
