I’ve been running a fairly successful DG list since 8th dropped with Typhus, Plaguecaster, Plague Marines, poxwalkers, some blightlord termies, PBC and bloat drone... am thinking of changing things up and adding a lord of war to the list but I’m not sure whether Morty (plus deathshroud) or a knight (not sure which type) would be best... Typically play against loyalist marine lists with repulsor, and a few dreads. Any advice would be most welcome...

My advice is useless because it's based on purely subjective criteria, but...
Mortarion, because he looks effin' cool. I have never been able to play him in a game, because my local gamer group doesn't use LOWs that often, but I own the model, because of course I do.

Deathguard is a bit weak at long range.
A range knight (double gatling, castigator) + 2 range wardog is a solid firebase and complete deathguard pretty well.

I have only played with mortarion once and he was terrific. I ran a squad of deathshroud with him. The terms were out of Los but in range to intercept wounds for him. This allowed me to pass what I wanted to them and forced my opponent to shoot Morty and I got to choose what passed to the terms or not. Small arms went on Morty big guns passed to terms. In the end he took 2000 pts of tau shooting and only lost 4 wounds (terms did die completely) but then my t1 he flew up and just wrecked face. Dont underestimate Morty with his bodyguards.
Knights on the other hand would give you some serious long range or even mid range firepower. Double gatling knight with vow that adds 1 to his attacks characteristic for every 10 enemy models killed during the game is incredibly nasty, I have had my knight up to 27 attacks in cc with his feet by t3 with this loadout, you wana scare your opponent this will definitely do it.

Jumping Morty from an anchor squad of deathshroud to a second squad DS'ing in on turn 2 worked wonders for keeping the big man alive to get stuck in in a couple recent games. Once he's stuck in he is incredible!
