Just a follow-along of my painting of what I call the Fedrid 87th "Deathstalkers" Regiment.
I wanted infantry with woodland cammo. Something between the marines from Aliens and the Russians/Cubans from Red Dawn.

Reminder to self: Here's how I'm painting the hundred+ infantry dudes:
Just painted up my first Warhammer unit, the Fedrid 1st Expeditionary Regiment. I wanted to do something with woodland cammo, and while originally inspired by the uniforms from Aliens, ended up with something closer to the South American occupation forces from Red Dawn. The goal was to be a good table quality, and I had to stop myself from getting too detailed like painting every weapon doodad so I don't get too bogged down in getting through the army. Maybe you'll find it interesting, maybe not, but it will at least remind me how I did it so I can be consistent for the next 200 dudes lol. Here's how it came together:

Since Fedrid is a Forest Death World, it makes sense to start with a Death World Forest coat for the uniform

Back side shown here

I've been using Morghast Bone to prep the eyes, so that they aren't stark white, but have some color separation from the skin to come later

Those eyes... I'm happy with the dude in the center. Guy on the upper right seems like he has looked into the void, and the void is looking back at him. I'm using Kislev flesh here, and will try to go back and touch up those crazy eyes at this stage. Dudes who come out looking ok are going to be the main infantry/veterans. Guys with eyes who make them look like they are staring down a cosmic horror about to rip them to shreds are going to go into the conscripts pile, because that's probably what's going to happen to them rikki tikki anyway.

We've also put on Castellan green for the armor.

Grenades, rifle bodies knife hilts, the top of the canteen also get Castellan green. We're going to try to mock the m41a pulse rifle for the lasguns

Now we move on to Abbaddon Black gloves, rifle accents, and boots. Lead Belcher accents added as well to the skulls, buttons, belt buckle.

Now for the camouflage. Using that Morghast bone again to put little spats around the Death Word Forest pickle suit. We've also used Gorthor Brown to paint the satchel, slings, and belt.

More camouflage spats using XV-88

And the back...

How much Nulin Oil should we put on? Hella...

Update 20200509: Tank Commanders
I've been using the rattle-can green cammo from walmart of all things for the tanks, but I like the color I end up with. Have to be careful with the washes or it gets too dark though. A while ago I was able to rescue some sprues with spare parts a guy was throwing out, and there was this female's head on it, probably eldar. I pondered what to do with it and then decided she'd be a "tank girl" though not a copy of the movie concept. Took some trimming but here she is as the Fedrid Tank Commander "Huntress"

Next up I wanted a guy with a flag. This tank quickly became known as "Old Standard".

"Get up ya pansies, the fight's not over" says the Lord Commissar. I was painting up the next batch of guardsmen and the pile of bits served as inspiration for this shot.

First six squads of guard are nearly ready.

Curious to know, those infantry models are what? From which set? Are those the new "easy to assemble" kits from GW?

Yes, those are the easy build guardsmen. Before all the Wuflu disruptions I could reliably get a box for 10 or 11 USD on amazon. Right now they are my cheapest entry into the hobby on track to playing. In the long run they may become conscripts if I end up building guys with more character and variation, but for now they have been essential to getting enough guys on the table to run a mechanized infantry list I'm working on.

I totally get it, Regular Guy. Astra Militarum, Tyranids, Orks, and other potentially decent horde armies require, well, hordes of infantry. You gotta slog through it in the beginning before you've gotten to a respectable sized army. From there you can experiment, but your first 100 models are a true pain.

Keep at it, though. It's worth it.

Thanks! six more plasma guys and I can put the first six squads and their transports on the table for a photo op. Sentinels too. I'm really excited to lay them out for the first time as soon as I get just a few more things done. I only hope I don't have to wait too long before we're all allowed out to play again. My impression is the play theme for guard is "Die until you win" much of the time, can't wait to experience the challenge if I can find some friendly takers.

Another personal reminder, switched to Ushabi Bone and Balor Brown on the guard camoflage pattern.

Update 20201119: Inquisition Support - Inquisitor Scarlette Bellata
"Scarlette Bellata is an talented inquisitor of the secretive Ordo Malleus generally operating with the Calixian Conclave. She often masquerades as witch hunter of the Ordo Hereticus wielding a Condemnor boltgun. Only upon dire need or after she has uncovered her demonic quarry does she reveal her affiliation with Ordo Malleus, and typically then by bringing forth her iconic Daemon Hammer to crush the chaos tainted foes of the Imperium."
I wanted an inquisitor with a hammer, but couldn't find a GW model I wanted to use. I ended up grabbing a Bones/Reaper miniature I thought looked good, then grafted on a Daemon Hammer from a Grey Knights kit, and a Condemnor Boltgun from a sisters kit. Should be fun to run amonst a blob of conscripts giving them fearlessness and a 5+ invulernable save. I'm thinking if I keep the blob shaped just right she may also be able to lay some smack down from relative safety using the guard as meat shields. We'll see.

1st Fedrid Expeditionary Regiment Armored Sentinels:
First batch of Sentinels for the Fedrid 1st Expeditionary Regiment. The rock under the center one was something I picked up on a walk, then slide over and over on the concrete to make a flat bottom that glued nicely to the stand. Ground was made out of a mix of various flock from Hobby Lobby. I was a moron and glued the lascannons on thinking "why would I take something else" lol. May just leave them and build some more transformers, though I think I'll still use the lascannons heavily just because I want the sentinel to actually do some damage if it lives long enough to hit something.

Well done on amassing a company of infantry, I can relate! The painting is solid throughout, nice tanks and walkers too! I also like the colour swatches you’ve used for your officers.

I notice your chaps aren’t fully based yet - might be worth looking up Geek Gaming basing system to help with that massive operation!

Hey that's a good find I see something there I've been looking for!

I have a technique now for basing that I aim to come back around to progressively for the infantry. If you notice the sentinels, that's a multi layer build up of dark sand, rocks, wash, and greenery flecks/vines that I'm going to leverage. I dislike the look of every guy or every other guy having a standard tuft of grass at his feet you often see. It's a forest world, so rather than gras I want each of them to have their own random bit of chaotic forest floor with vines, sticks, leaves etc.

One of the things I was looking for was 1mm ish autumn leaves scatter that would kind of go with their uniform (the way copper head snakes blend in with oak leaves). Looks like they have something worth a try!

So Thanks!

Update 20210421: Feral Guardsmen from Fedrid
The Regiments trained on Fedrid are composed of elites from Scintilla, Spheris Secundus, and the Feral natives of Fedrid itself. Here we see feral guardsmen from the hunting tribes on fedrid.

This woman is from one of the native hunting tribes of Fedrid. She carries a lighter Lascarbine and wears no armor to remain light and agile. (This model was converted from one of the Raging Heroes Jailbirds by cutting off the standard rifle the model comes with, and adding a catachan carbine with it's stock and grip removed. Also seen in the background are a new leaf scatter I'm using punched out of real leaves, thanks for the idea Ragsta!).

Seen here are some of the natives from Fedrid that fill out the ranks of the Fedrid Imperial Guard regiments. They carry a version of the Fedrid Razor Disc adapted to use in the Imperial Guard (seen carried on the belt just under this guardsman's right elbow). These natives are born hunters and often refuse to wear the standard issue armor available to the Regiments of Fedrid. Partially because the poor fit the armor available makes to their stocky build, but largely because they feel it is not in the spirit of the Great Hunt. These tribesmen have fought from their youth to survive and emerge as the top predators on Fedrid, and all are proud that they have earned a chance to join the Great Hunt of the Stars, serving the will of the Greatest Huntsman, the Emperor of Man. These guys are made from Mad Robot Miniatures "Lykan" heads and torsos, with fatigue leggings and bear arms. Lasguns were cut and glued on the MRM arms to keep them in line with the GW Astra Militarum flavor. Other GW bits were added as well.

Also, decided to rename the regiment as the Fedrid 87th "Deathstalkers" given their lifestyle and training to hunt for deadly prey.

Hey man, nice army, solid colour scheme. I like the inquisitor, very cool. The feral guardsmen are very interesting, it would be cool to see more of those.

As you wish

Here's the Feral Guardsman platoon holding off Tyranids as they wait for evacuation. These nids were lovingly painted by a 12 year old by the way. Also features is my favorite Old School Sly Marbo mini.

Members of an 87th Fedrid Deathstalkers feral guardsman platoon hold out against a swarm of Tyranids as they wait for evacuation.

Members of an 87th Fedrid Deathstalkers feral guardsman platoon level their lasguns at the incoming foes!

Members of an 87th Fedrid Deathstalkers feral guardsman platoon move to reinforce the front line.

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAGH!

Members of an 87th Fedrid Deathstalkers feral guardsman platoon begin evacuation.

Members of an 87th Fedrid Deathstalkers feral guardsman platoon lay covering fire as the board an evacuation transport. Flying is still an unsettling experience for these forest born hunters, but it's welcome compared to what lays behind.

There's a lot of great papercraft vehicles and terrain available there.

It's big. Right now I tend to use it as a board centerpiece for terrain.

I told my son it was time to start painting up Scions, and I was debating about how to do it. I made a really nice Lamda Lion melta guy, but the amount of time it took to do it justice would leave me fielding scions in a few years perhaps.

My son said he had a guard army in mind already, and that maybe I should do them. They are from the planet Winter's Grasp, a rich mineral planet once warm and green due to terraforming during the dark age of technology, but now a frozen death world as the old technologies broke down. The planetary guard regiment is the "Winter's Guard", and a a regiment of Scions herald from this world, known as "The Winter Watch".

Here's my take on what he wanted to achieve. These will be dropping in along side Fedrid when needed.

So I decided to upgrade my chimeras with the Cougar Light APC turret from Blood and Skulls. Just had to apply the standard "Vine-o-flauge" pattern my transports and support artillery get, and I think it makes an excellent upgrade.

So I came across a box of Escher gang weapons from Necromunda, and thought they would be perfect for getting the real Imperium weapons feel into my Raging Heroes Jail Birds female guardsmen. Sure enough, they fit perfectly. I swapped the heads with Mad Robot Minatures female heads here. The RH heads either had hair, helmets, or expressions that didn't really go with the theme. I love having models that are unique like this. I'm particuarly happy with how the Melta gunner's face turned out. I'm still only getting a good face less than 1/4 of the time, and it's a real triumph when one turns out this well.
