This is just a bit of fun. You can choose which Primarch comes back next in game. Any Primarch of your choosing. Dead, Alive up to you.

BUT... you have to write the fluff to justify your choice. In a short story paragraph, no more than 300-500 words write the intro to how your Primarch returns and justify their existence.

My choice is the Lion for obvious reasons.

The Watcher in the dark strides over to the Lions stasis Chamber. The air thickens and the power is switched off, as the chamber powers down the room becomes silent, a single breath can be heard from the Lion. Meanwhile on the planets surface where the Rock is in orbit. Guilliman is over ran. Magnus' ritual worked, Mortarions forces have been able to come through. The two traitor Primarchs working in twine, their end goals may not be the same but for now they are aligned. A single assault of Guilliman, rip off the head is their thought. The psychic blows form the two demon Primarchs taking their tole on the psykers on the battlefield doing everything in their power to protect their gene father. One by one they are succumbing to the warp. A distracted Guilliman see's one of his sons burn into lightning from the inside out and he senses his psychic barrier fading, Mortarion uses this opportunity and swipes Guilliman to the floor. The scythe is slicing through the air, he shuts his eyes asking for forgiveness from his father and his sons. Only his thoughts continue, he opens his eyes, to his surprise a mighty Black Shield is planted against the scythe, The lion braced behind it throws his weight upwards, the long blonde hair flickers away with the force, a sight Guilliman thought he would never see again, Mortarion staggers backwards. The Lion looks at his brother with mighty eyes and the stern look he remembers all that time ago utters a single sentance.
'Sorry I'm Late.'

Primarchs returning to the imperium pretenders, ether marines taking up the mantle of name and Armor in its time of need. Or elected into the position though chapter politics.
For the imperium as a whole, the humans within it would see and know little diferance.

Those outside the 4 primarchs of each god returning though mockery of the warp and it’s gods, puppets to play against the imperium.

In the end they are all dead hero’s lost to history and myth also really would push the imperium story well I feel. And give space for new hero’s, charecters and villains in the 40k setting.

I am on my phone so I have a little though to the basics of my idea, guess it was not entirely enough. And I was not moaning at all, that would be a genuine go at a little fluff idea. I just do not work from the start in paragraph form like that
If I was going though the whole of it I would sit down and read up on chapters and thoughts and where they would head with the changing political battleground and where they sit.
Why some chapters would do it and why others would refuse to resurrect such a person.
As well as why some have Already started with such a thing.

I will have a sit and see if I can rework it to fit the full idea a bit better.

This is a bit rough. But a better go at it for the idea and closer to the intent of the thread

The blessed Bolter Fire Ecco though the forest in chorus to the death of those who would stand against the emperor and his chosen few.
Brother Aegeus took to this hymn like any other battle, ending each of the cultists and there kin with efficiency and perfection his chapter demanded.
They had run abandoned by there masters and by there faith in those who would hide as cowards from the light of the sun.

With little sound to warn and only the protection of his blessed Armor giving him a chance to bring Bolter to bare on the new foe, a creature with a smile and claws scrapping along the Armor as it shed paint.
With each round he placed towards the creature missing even with his near perfect shot. It danced away as it sang in some unknown demonic tongue.
Brother Aegeus joined it in this dance of death, His Bolter finding tune with the creatures song and dance as it weaved amongst the trees.
His Brothers must be dead as he could hear nothing but the sounds of battle close to him.

He was sure to have struck the creature several times as it had taken nothing but the Color from his Armor.
But it was mocking him, it still felt like it had the upper hand. He would show that with his faith in his purpose for the emperor that was a mistake.

The creature had lead him to a glade hidden away, a fitting place for its end and Brother Aegeus glory for the emperor.

With the moment of calm and his movement into the glade, he had fear nothing. But this was the first time he understood a daemon. Cultists or imperial citizen lay dead through the glad. Blood pooled in its centre dug out, where the demon danced waiting for his full attention.
For the first time he could hear the words to her song, glory at the angels of the emperor of man. There perfection of slaughter of his enemies and the passed dead’s of his chapter.
He raise his blesssed Bolter and put six shots into the daemons head, but it’s form just shift a little in the wind as it’s song shake the glade with power

The the song was in glory to those of old, a new beast pulled from the warp standing proud in the Armor of Brother Aegeus own.
He stood his ground and putt all that was left into this creature as it formed, but it was all for nothing.
He had fear nothing, but the daemons had care little for his bravery. He was perfect in his battle against them, but they had found him nothing but perfect for there twisted games.

He was trapped in this song of glory of old, daemon smiths forging new Armor from the myths as if they themselves had stood there. A weapon held up and given fit for the son of the emperor himself.
Magic and power gifted anew to form this new creature to bring glory in the name of a new god to battlefields across the the galaxy.
A mocking reminder of the myths and legends forged by daemon hands to bring chaos to the galaxy anew.

Go the opposite. Guilliman is just a meat puppet for the Emperor. His body gives out and he goes away forever. The space marines as a whole are all so devestated by this they withdraw to deep space and are never heard of again. The Imperium sees this as a traitorous act and expunge all records of the Astartes ever existing post-Heresy and within a few generations the Astartes are a considered a myth told to reassure scared children and the setting becomes a much more interesting place without Deus Ex Machina Marines to turn up and save the day constantly.

I will be sad if it doesn't take a kiss from prince charming [Cypher, presumably] to awaken Lion'el Johnson from his slumber.

As for my own Primarch, if Leman Russ returns, I'd like him to return as Odin-Russ as opposed to Thor-Russ. Probably best with one eye put out and support psychic powers [he was already a psyker of some kind in the books IIRC], which both conforms with the norse myth being referenced by going to seek the roots of Yggdrasil and forms bookends for the conflict between the Tsons and the Space Wolves.

We'll probably get stabby giant mutant werewolf Russ, though, if he returns.

Guardsmen, hear me! Cadia may lie in ruin, but her proud people do not! For each brother and sister who gave their lives to Him as martyrs, we will reap a vengeance fiftyfold! Cadia may be no more, but will never be forgotten; our foes shall tremble in fear at the name, for their doom shall come from the barrels of Cadian guns, fired by Cadian hands! Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades!

They're all tremendously straightforward. In order:

I The Lion: He's sleeping. Wake him up.
III Fulgrim: He gets bored of moping around in the Eye of Terror and comes out.
IV Perturabo: Also gets bored of sitting around and comes out
V: Jaghatai Khan: Cegorach probably has him trapped in a loop somewhere in the Webway going round and round in circles, and one day he'll pop out of a Webway Gate with perfect comedic timing (possibly right after a Chaos Lord says "Nothing can stop us now!")
VI: Leman Russ: He gets bored of exploring the Eye of Terror and comes home.
VII: Rogal Dorn: All they found of him was his hand, which implies that the rest of him could easily be up and moving somewhere. He'll likely have a really big cybernetic powerfist when he returns.
VIII: Konrad Curze: The video feed cut out before they show his death and we're supposed to believe he's actually dead? He'll pop up again.
IX: Sanguinius: I've got a theory that the Blood Angels are experiencing constant echoes of his death because his consciousness has been somehow psychically dispersed among the Blood Angels and needs time to gather his strength again. Also that Mephiston is S/T5 because Sanguinius is preparing an appropriate vessel for his resurrection. The Sanguinor is a red herring.
X: Ferrus Manus: Definitely dead, but Fulgrim's been cloning Ferrus and trying to convince him to turn to Chaos and killing him when he inevitably fails for a long time, so all we need is for a Ferrus clone to escape.
XII: Angron: He's come out of the Eye of Terror and had proper rules in older versions of the game, easy enough for him to pop up again...
XIII: Guilliman: Up and moving already.
XIV: Mortarion: Up and moving already.
XV: Magnus: Up and moving already.
XVI: Horus: Probably will stay dead and be replaced as the Black Legion Primarch by Daemon Prince Abbadon.
XVII: Lorgar: Just needs to get up and moving.
XVIII: Vulkan: Asleep. Just needs to wake up.
XIX: Corax: Lost off on an undefined journey. Maybe he'll get his bearings and find his way back.
XX: Alpharius: Who knows? Maybe dead. Maybe alive. Maybe he's been dead all along and whoever GW makes a model for eventually will be someone else in his armour.

Balanced Game: Noun. A game in which all options and choices are worth using.

One of the lost Primarchs and legions comes back. Their fleet had just undergone a displacement via. Warp storm and they were simply shot out of the galaxy. In the process all their Navigators were killed, and the fleet had to make it back to contact under non-FTL drive, which has taken 10,000 years. During the journey, the Legionnaires are unneeded in empty space, so they were mostly put into stasis until the return home. The Primarch mostly sleeps in stasis, being awoken once every 10 years for an update. Generations of people have come and gone, and created their own society and culture, all while maintaining the stasis fields keeping the Legionnaires alive, and keeping the ships of the fleet running on their way back to the Milky Way. Also, the "mutation" of the Primarch is that she's a woman, and her geneseed made it possible for women to join the Astartes. The Legion is co-ed.

The fleet is on the edge of the galaxy now, and they're trying to learn as much as possible about what's been happening. To everybody seeing them, they just look like a normal fleet-based Space Marine chapter. They're not entirely sure they want to get involved.

And They Shall Not Fit Through Doors!!!

The Son of Russ stared into the gloom, golden eyes straining as they tried to penetrate the darkness and identify the scource of such horrifying sounds ans smells.
"Tell me" prompted the father of the Ultramarines "this foul beast reeks of Slaanesh. Tell me where it is so we may end its existence".

"No need brother." the voice boomed out of the darkness that Jaeger still failed to penetrate "Or are you so eager to see the end of your boring ways?"
Jaeger looked up as the Lord of the Ultramarines bristled, the glorious blue and gold armour that had looked regal even covered in gore momentarily looked angry and dirtied.

"Brother...?" Roboute almost whispered the word. The presence before him was not Fulgrim the brother he had been informed turned to Slaanesh, whatever faced him was not a creature of vanity but it was similar, there was another word to describe it.

"If terror prevents you coming to me then fear not brother for I will come to you and those blue clad dogs around you!"
Roboute glanced down as movement caught his eye, the Ultramarines around him braced as a unit but one warrior jumped out in front. Not the ultramarine blue of his son's namesake but the stormy blue of Fenris, the Son of Russ could not abide such an insult to his - Pride - in less than a fraction of a second the Primarch of the Ultramarines discovered the word he saught, uncovered the identity of the presence and collared the Space Wolf in an attempt to save his life from his gene sire as it barreled forward at an insane speed.
Jaeger roared as his sword arm was removed and his frost blade clattered to the ground then froze as the sword of the Allfather intercepted the blade that had been aimed at his head, the blazing sword seemed odd, it was not as cold as he expected such a blade to be...his senses then noticed the difference, extreme heat and extreme cold mixed under his nose.
"Russ" Guilliman hissed.
The evil presense solidified momentarily from an icy storm cloud to a frozen face, the face of war and winter.

Guilliman threw the space Wolf off to the side as the Chaotic presence shifted then gripped the sword in both hands, wincing in horror as Brother Captain Corrid was destroyed between the Emperor's Sword and the icy blast. Another blast and yet another of Guiliman's sons died on his father's sword, Robute pushed forward and away from his honour guard, he knew he had to take the fight to his brother or his entire honour guard would be slain against their Emperor's Sword in the most ironic way the primarch could imagine.

"Finally ready to fight brother? I always said you never took enough joy in combat to be any good at it. Just look what your hesitation has cost you!"

Roboute snarled "You'd know all about hesitation wouldn't you Leman. Your's gave rise to Magnus the demon and allowed Horus to slay the our father."
The flaming blade swept through empty air as the presense dissipated, the second swing connected in a collision of extreme opposites, heat and cold swirled in a visible warping of the air. Roboute caught a glimpse of the weapon he faced, a sword, always his brother's preferred weapon "Your hesitation to rejoin our father's dream after his death cost us brothers!"

The presence paused and Robute lashed out with his father's sword catching the presence with a shallow slice. Russ roared and solidified but his sword once again intercepted Robute's. Leman Russ leaned forward, bringing his face of ice and fury closer to Roboute's, his sharp teeth bared in an enraged snarl "You know nothing of what I faced brother! Our father used my genes to create monsters. He made monsters to slay their brothers and because he was so successful in creating monsters from my blood he expected me to be one too. He expected me to destroy my brothers!" once again Leman Russ became the presence and whipped around, moving clear of Roboute Guilliman and hurtling towards the Ultramarine honour guard who had moved clear to give their father room to fight, killing one and grabbing another to hurl at Guilliman. Roboute slipped past the flying brother as he lunged after the presence and stabbed at it with his blazing sword but the presence danced clear and whipped around him again. Roboute caught the sword and cursed as his Hand of Dominion passed clean through the presence where a head should be proving only the Emperor's Sword could damage its wraithlike form.

"So you loved your brothers more than Father's dream? Why did you pick fights with them?" Roboute glanced about, taking stock of the downed warriors as he chased the presence and further insults "You were a monster!"

"I WAS TESTING THEIR STRENGTH!!!" Roboute blocked the sword as Leman's face solidified behind it, his rage disrupting his control over his form, Robute clenched his fist and flexed to punch but felt the strength drain from his arm, he slashed at the presence making it retreat and stole a glance. The Space Wolf Jaeger's frost sword protruded from the plate of the Hand of Dominion, crippling it and draining it of all its energy. Not one for useless pieces Roboute shed the weapon and gripped the Emperor's Sword in both hands, wincing as it gave him a burn to his ungauntleted hand.

"You were trying to prove your own. There was no need for the story of the lion and the Wolf. No need for the Night of the Wolf and no need for the Council of Nikea." Roboute blocked another blow and counter attacked but his own strike was blocked.

Once again Leman Russ appeared "Aren't you one to talk, your Dauntless Few were little more than brothers you could easily manipulate!" Robute gave ground as he blocked and parried the frozen blade "You told both Ferrus Manus and Dorn that their siegecraft and fortifications were superior, you rubbed my pride and you consoled Sanguinius with his visions. SO YOU COULD USE US!!!"

"Speaking of visions" Roboute chided as he blocked, counter-attacked and danced back from the frozen blade "What happened to yours?
Listen but closely Brothers, for my life's breath is all but spent. There shall come a time far from now when our Chapter itself is dying, even as I am now dying, and our foes shall gather to destroy us. Then my children, I shall listen for your call in whatever realm of death holds me, and come I shall, no matter what the laws of life and death forbid. At the end I will be there. For the final battle. For the Wolftime."

Guilliman raised his sword as a sharp edge swung at his head then started and roared in pain as a real blade passed through his gauntlet and fingers, sending the Emperor's Sword flying out of what was left of his mangled hands.

" FOOL! IAM THE WOLFTIME!!!"

These stories are awesome. I love seeing how people would interpret the lore for themselves.

It's fun to let creative juices spill.

Let's open it up, not just Primarchs, another faction's response to Primarchs.

I did have an amusing scenario set in Comorragh before the end of 7th edition.

The hammering on Khaine's gate in the depths of Comorragh is getting louder and louder. Cracks are spreading across its surface. Vect marshals all the DE forces he can threaten bribe of blackmail to hold off whatever demonic hordes comes through.

Finally the wraithbone gate gives way and instead of daemons, Jaghati Khan blazes through at the head of several hundred White Scars. He then proceeds to carve his way through Comorragh and back into realspace.

Sadly in "Fracture of Biel Tan", Khaine's Gate did give way and it was just a boring deamonic incursion.

I stand between the darkness and the light. Between the candle and the star.

I just wouldn't, honestly. Any of them, and no equivalents. The never-ending cycle of moar biggar!1! is a major part of the issues with 40k.

Also, it always seemed kinda cannibalistic to me to have the Primarchs in both 30K and 40K. IMO, they should have been left as a 30K thing.

It's a short simple story.
I'll leave the novelization of it to actual novel writers though.

Assorted psyker pre-cog types (Imperial & otherwise, definitely Eldar) alert their people/forces that something of incredible significance is about to occur at coordinates _______ - just some random spot in space. X marks the spot & everyone wants a piece.
For the non-psyker factions - Tau & Necrons? Well, they notice the movements of the others & send their own recon forces. Somethings going on....
(This'll allow for an event book, a novel, some new models all around!, some awesome new terrain kits, & give everyone an excuse to come to the party)

Alas; multiple Imperial factions, assorted Eldar, Chaos, Orks, Tyranids, Tau, Necrons, etc don't mix well and an 8+way brawl starts for control of the foreseen objective point.

Meanwhile, within the warp, Leman Russ & the remaining SWs who followed him, are fighting a boarding action vs some Chaos ship they've been pursuing. Their assault is what causes the Chaos vessel to drop out of the warp at this otherwise inconsequential random coordinate. And right into the 8+way brawl.
It is pure random chance that Russ & his troops are returned to the here & now.
(Parts of this Chaos ship would make for great terrain kits!)

Russ's prey is destroyed & he and his forces then proceed to tear into whatever other traitors/xenos are unfortunate to be the next closest. Maybe even some unfamiliar Imperial faction.....

Obviously the Imperium wins this fight.

Roboute Guilliman & Leman Russ are reunited.
Russ is brought up to speed on everything he's missed.
And in the grim darkness of the far future the wars continue.

Best of all? I'll finally get to use my RT era Leman Russ figure (and his 2 wolves), in 40k, as the character the model was made as.

The Imperium wins every fight.

They are beset on all sides by existential threats, but it doesn't at all translate into the lore where it's all Chapter Master McWish-Fulfllment single-handedly saving entire planetary systems all day, every day.

Off the top of my head, I can think of one fight the Imperium loses in all of the books I've read; Kastorel-Novem.

I guess Vraks was a no-score draw.

They didn't win all their fights against the Redacted in Sons of the Hydra.
Four chapters listed as destroyed and we get to witness one of them, Brazen Claws or some previously mentioned successor chapter. That said the Redacted think they're doing the Imperium a favour by wiping useless chapters.

I hoped that maybe draigo or stern would end up getting new rules in the PA books, as voldus is too new to get a new models in the same edition. Sadly it seems like GW just killed off half the GK named characters off screen in the last PA.

But who knows maybe now we end up getting an empowered NDK or a psi knight like the ones guarding titan.

An Imperial Fist Scout claims to be the reincarnation of Rogal Dorn and soon shows great skill and aptitude in fighting, strategy, leadership, fortifications etc. And begins to manifest astonishing physical skills too.

The Chapter would be happy to promote him and honor him, if he'd just give up the claim of being the reincarnation of Dorn. He will not. They arrest him but he is broken out by believers.

The Chapter (and successor chapters and IG units and anyone else you'd care to throw in) split between the followers of Dorn and the traditionalists. They cooperate when they need to but at times are at war with each other.

Attempts to have the Emperor or RG clear this up are inconclusive.

Worse yet 'reincarnations' are reported on opposite ends of the galaxy, and at least twice self-proclaimed Dorn reincarnations have met and acknowledged each other as real.

The kit would include 3 models, a scout, a marine and a full on primarch sized model. You could use any (different stat lines) or all 3 at once.

As a Dark Angel player, I'm not really sure I want the Lion as the next Primarch. It just seems too obvious. I'd rather see someone more left-field come back first, like the Khan, or Corax. I'd also hope to see some primarchs return with some slight adjustments to their character. After all, most have been away for 10,000 years.

For example, I'd like to see the Khan come back in some spectacularly sudden fashion and wreck house for a bit before disappearing just as suddenly and mysteriously. I'd like him do this a couple of times before having a sit down with Guilliman or some other character to explain (briefly), that he's found something in the webway which has altered his perspective. What it is, he won't say (as it's not really important, it's just a MacGuffin). While in no way belligerent towards Guilliman and the Imperium, I'd like to see him become even more of an outsider than he was before, and borrow somewhat from the Dark Angels trope of having some other, mysterious agenda, which now occupies his mind more than defending the Imperium. This would be in keeping with his previous trait of skirting around the periphery of the crusade, and rarely getting involved in the internecine politics of his brothers, while adding some Dark Angel-esque mystery to his motivation to mix things up a bit, while simultaneously keeping stuff largely the same.

The Lion on the other hand, I'd prefer to be simultaneously more belligerent and also fraternal with Guilliman. I'd like him to question the presumed authority Guilliman at first, before realizing that from a tactical perspective, the wisest decision is actually to let Guilliman lead the political and logistical quagmire that the Imperium has become from Terra, playing to Guilliman's strengths, while the Lion himself can focus investigating how this whole Cicatrix Maledictum mess came about, and how we might go about undoing it, starting with the Eye of Terror and the ruins of Cadia (while taking a quick, quiet detour to the ruins of Caliban, to figure out just what happened to Luthor and where he might be now.)

My apologies for not providing any prose as others have, but these are just some ideas that I think would let characters return with just a little bit of something new, while changing practically nothing about the setting.
