Hello everyone,

I am building up my IG army up from a tank Company to a larger, combined arms battalion. Very much like an USMC MEU or an US Army BCT. I wanted to make a common sense military unit and not a "fluffy" one. I have my Order of Battle in the diagram below. My goal is to create a detachment for each box in the OOB that would function as close to its real life counterpart as it can, using units and their rules, from the IG/FW codex. Below the OOB is the break down of each detachment, please help me round this out.

All I can say is I’m jealous, this is the kind of army I’d always hope to make. Kudos!

So is your aim to have a battalion or a brigade?

A standard combined arms battalion these days consists of I think 5 companies - HQ, tank, tank, Mech infantry, mech infantry, with other support assets held at battalion strength within the brigade - an engineer, support and Artillery (fires) battalions. Mixing the UK/US system the battalion is akin to a regiment with multiple making up a brigade and multiple brigades a division (then 2+ divisions being a core).

How the guard 'regiment' fits into that is tricky, they are commanded by a Colonel but in the fluff look more like a brigade. They also tend to not be combined arms and instead infantry/armour/artillery/Super heavy/Etc.

In GW terms these companies would be battalion/spearhead/vanguard/SHT detachments?

I like the way you have done it, I would perhaps 'raise' it up a bit organisationally wise as have detachments as companies not platoons.

So a Super heavy tank company is 3 tanks, each one equivalent to a platoon.

A spearhead detachment is the whole tank company (GW likes things in 3's, not 4's like the real world), so 2 command tanks and 3 platoons, each of, sadly, 3 tanks.

You could make them combined arms teams (companies) with 2 command tanks, 2 tank platoons and one infantry platoon (mechanised) using the battalion detachment structure.

Be fun to fight a campaign using orbats where losing all your command assets from a detachment reduced its CPs to zero and you had to pick forces for a game from what was in a formation that gets attrited during the campaign.

GW fluff is garbage and I'm completely ignoring it.

It's modeled off of a Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU), but the tank platoon and artillery platoons are upgraded to companies, and a fourth company was added, Reconnaissance. Now, this is just how I'm building my IG army. I will not deploy them as such. I'll just pick the models that I want to make my list.

My tank platoons are spear heads so I can have a commander and three tanks, just like the Marines do. Though the Marines are getting rid of all their tanks now.
