A random ditch next to a zoo (self imposed exile)

I'm furious. No, I'm far more than that, but I lack the words to adequately describe just how royally MIFFED I am right now. I'm a huge fan of the HH series, and I've bought every book the day they've come out. When the limited edition of The First Wall was released I missed the email (that comes in at around 10am on a Saturday) by two hours. By then it had sold out. I was gutted, so gutted that I was determined not to miss the next limited edition.

Just yesterday I received an email from GW hinting that the next LE SoT book, Dan Abnett's Saturnine, would be released today, so just this morning I hovered over my email account with such eagerness it was as unseemly as it was embarrassing. At 10:05am the email arrived!

I instantly went to the GW website, signed in, and went to order a copy of the book... only to be met with a message saying "this product is no longer available online". How can that be even remotely possible!? How can 2500 copies of a book sell out in the less than sixty seconds it took me to sign in and order a copy?

I'm not buying it. I mean, of course I tried to buy it, but I'm talking about I'm not buying that there's nothing fishy about this. I don't believe that that many books can sell out quicker than the time it takes to press a link, type a password and press "pre-order". Now that's some bullsheeit.

Firstly, why are Black Library sending out a newsletter advertising a product that isn't even available? And just who HAS got their hands on a copy before it was even put up for sale? Have GW staffers and other people connected to insiders worked a fast one in order to get their grabby hands on a copy before it was officially released, and thereby depriving ACTUAL fans of the privilege?

Something doesn't add up about this, and I'd like to know what that is. Has anyone else had this problem, and do any of you have any answers for this annoying phenomenon?

They go on sale at 10am, sometimes a minute or so before. Your best bet is waiting on the page refreshing it constantly around 9:58.

It's never occurred to you that there's at least 2500 other huge HH fans who were also waiting to pounce on the release? You really thought you were alone/unique in aiming to be the early bird?
Clearly you've also never tried to buy tickets for super popular concerts/events....

Solution 1: As has been said, lurk on the actual site & refresh constantly starting about 2 minutes before.
Solution 2: Learn not to be too disappointed when you fail to score a LE item.
Solution 3: If you really are a huge fan & MUST complete your LE collection you'll be tracking the books down on the secondary market.

But if there really is something fishy going on? If there really is some conspiracy? You'll never learn the truth about it. Refer back to solutions 2 & 3.

You think that is crazy? People spend a lot of money on covers. Look at this. $150 for 14 dust covers. I guess if you really like something, you don't mind spending the money to make it look good on display.

That's not too bad. Little less than $11/cover. The cost looks high only because there's so many books in that series.

For true foolishness though? You only have to look at Space Marine players & the Codex Supliments. $40 for 7-9 pages of rules (wich could be condensed by a page or two). Wich are then trashed/overwritten by FAQs/Errata. So what'd you actually pay for?
I mean, sure, an IH etc fan might try & claim they get their $s worth due to the lore. But do you really believe that? And do you believe it at all from the meta-chasers?

Jesus Christ relax. The only idiots here are people who are clearly not enjoying the game or hobby anymore and yet still linger like a fart to proclaim their superiority by seeing through the GW scam.

The absolute hyperbolic nonsense about the supplements being "trashed" by the FAQ too. They're all still incredibly good. Are they the overpowered curb stomps that they use to be? No. But then I didn't buy mine to be overpowered, I bought it to add flavour and a bit more depth to my Marines.

A lot of people on here need to get over themselves and their ridiculous notions

Limited editions like this are designed to sell out immediately. I know, I used to plan them for a major book selling chain.

What you are describing is a feature not a bug.

These are going to be sold out by the time you get the e-mail. Like other people have said, you need to be on the site before the book goes on sale to have a chance to get it.

This was the same thing with the SoB boxset. They printed a fixed amount designed to sell out quickly, and then they did because they announced the date/time of the opening and people were online waiting to order. Wait on the website, not on your email, for one, because if it's popular then by the time you get the email it will be too late. I set an alarm for 5 min beforehand when I bought the SoB set.

Limited edition sets are designed to sell out quickly. They'll have regular editions available soon, so don't worry because you've not missed the bus and will still be able to get your book.

Forward, for vengeance and retribution, in His name and the names of our fallen comrades!

Apparently the book goes on sale on the website at 10am. I got the email at 10:05am. That means 2500 copies were sold in less than five minutes. That's more than eight sales EVERY SECOND for five minutes. Someone further up in this thread asked me if it'd never occurred to me that other people also wanted this book. Of course it occurred to me, which is why I was waiting in my email account and refreshing it every few seconds from around 9:55am.

I thought the book wasn't available until the email went out, which is why I wasn't on the website itself, but 2500 copies selling out in less than five minutes is insane.

I'll wait on the homepage itself next time, but considering how fast they sell out I'm not sure I'll get a copy even then.

You also need to allow for the fact that there will be 2500 copies (or whatever the number is) available worldwide, not just in the UK, so you're actually competing for a fraction of that number.

Uh yes, I do believe it because I'm a narrative player and I bought the IF book on release.

I've been dedicated to Imperial Fists since I wrote my own successor chapter in 6E and to be honest, the thing that sparked the most joy for me was simply being able to put a rules book for the IF onto my bookshelf.

I started playing 40k in 4E and remember buying the Space Marine codex and BA supplement as my first books. (before deciding that I wasn't actually interested in Renaissance blood nutters...)

So to finally have a codex supplement that said "Imperial Fists" on the cover, like my old BA one, made me all sorts of happy. Especially because it also has little bits of 42M fluff in it.

I couldn't have cared less about the quality of the rules so long as they felt thematically appropriate for the Chapter. And before you ask/accuse, yes I also own Sentinels of Terra.

I hate to break it to you, but e-mail isn't always instantaneous.

It's entirely possible that someone at GW clicked the button to send out the e-mail to the list of registered people at 10:00 AM, and it took five minutes for the servers to get to your name on the list, contact your mail server, and send you that message. There's a lot of seemingly arbitrary or random seeming rate limiting involved in the e-mail process, especially when a lot of nearly identical messages are being sent out to a lot of people (*cough* Is this spam, the servers try to decide... *cough*).

But they give you a list to sign up for because it works well enough for normal products.

Yep, I've definitely fell out with my email account. The problem with Games Workshop's website is the SoT LE books don't appear on the home page like they do on Black Library's site. You have to type "Horus Heresy limited edition" into the search field in order to go looking for it. It's all very clumsy considering how rapidly you need to find your way to the product. And if you click on the product on Black Library's home page, it serves as nothing more than a link to Games Workshop's home page, where you have to sign in before you do anything else.

Another reason I waited in my email account was because I've tried to wait on Black Library's home page before in order to buy a different limited edition. I was expecting it to appear at 10am, but after ten minutes or so it hadn't appeared. I decided to go check my emails, and after a minute or so in my email account I received the email about the book, so I immediately went to BL home page and found it had appeared.

It's because of that one experience that I always thought the books would never be for sale before the emails went out. I've also just checked my email from this morning, and the time stamp on it is 10:03, not 10:05, so I was actually just three minutes too late.

2500 sales in less than 180 seconds. I've never known anything like it. Oh well, June it is, then, for the mass produced release! It's Dan Abnett, so I'm sure it'll be worth the wait.

A little off topic, but I'm mightily surprised that Abnett isn't writing the concluding book of the series. He wrote the first one, so it would've felt appropriate for him to do the last one.

As said, 2500 was the world wide number, UK allotment was most likely a closer to 500-1000. 5 minutes for that amount isn't really that fast, the slip cover edition of End Times Khaine sold out in 3 minutes in the US.

Also, you don't refresh the homepage, you refresh the preorder page.
