So in the games I have played with my Skaven Pestilens so far, my army usually gets annihilated before I can adequately close the gap to the enemy or they are decimated by anything that has rend. What options do I have to try and boost the longevity of my horde?

What exactly are you playing against that is doing this?

Well those are two of the strangest armies out there, so it will be an uphill battle. With Skaven you need to make sure you are giving yourself battleshock immunity, after that just bring more of then so when they die in droves (which they will) you have enough left over. Exploit that max unit discount, it is overpowered on Skaven.

I try to view Warhammer as more of a toolbox with examples than fully complete games.

The only issues with that is that Lists are locked in so I am stuck with 4 squads of 30 monks and I was trying to avoid incredibly long movement phases since we only have two hours to get it done

Movement trays are your friend.

You really should take a couple Clanrat units and hten a couple plague monk ones, use the rats to take the damage and tie up. They are still extremely effective too when they get there, but also are very cheap.

So true being able to move five models at a time with the apoc trays really speeds up a game.

Or you could also buy 20-40 model trays on eBay for a fraction of the cost.

In terms of the OP, as ninth said, those armies are both at the top currently so it won’t be easy.
All skaven need large blocks as they will die pretty quickly.
Once your in combat, monks will eat just about anything without many issues, but you need the numbers to get there.

What’s your current list?
Also, any idea what lists your running against?

Sometimes neutralising key units or hero’s will make life easier for you.

I'm unfamiliar with the rules of Skaven. How practical is it for them to alpha across the board? Or would you better of going beta and shooting turn 1?

Non mixed Skaven suffer from versatility problems in my experience.

If you’re down with 60 clan rats for battle line the warp grinder team might be good for them. Forbidden power and chronometer cogs endless spells could help them get places and charge turn 1.

Or run them in a Nurgle army with a GUO so they could move an extra 3” and then run and charge.

Does pestilens have any battalions?

But for sure get those big movement trays! Easier to set up and turns 1&2 you probabaly won’t need to move them individually anyways.
