I have been working on a Death Guard commission that started as a primer only job but due to the social isolation measures doesn't really allow me to give these models back to the owner easily. So I agreed to do a commission paint job on them to a minimum 3 colors up standard with Typhus getting a 'more effort' level paint job.

Day Zero. This is the collection as I intended to give back to the owner. I wasn't really interested in actually painting them as I have my own Kill Team worth of Death Guard I haven't finished painting in months. However, the owner was fine with a low tabletop standard since they said they weren't very likely to get further than this primed state for a while.

Day One. I am pretty much only putting a single coat of paint on the Poxwalkers consisting of Reaper Pale Flesh. I think combine with the Khaki primer and Argrax shade it should give a convincing enough death pallor look. The bases are in Flat Earth to simulate those of GW.

Day Two. I decided to go ahead after checker with the owner on painting groups of 20 in a particular color. This should make it easier for the owner to field them if groups of poxwalkers get close to each other to know which are in each sqaud. Conversely, I am going with brown leather bits one half and black leather bits for the other half as well. So even if the owner wants to just throw together models none of them have completely identical paint.

Day Three. I picked up some Death Guard Green and Armageddon Dunes paint. Normally, I paint mostly Vallejo paints. This was my first 'real' GW paint (read: not Shade or Technical). I decided on going GW in case the owner does decide to paint their own stuff or commissions someone else in the future. I have finished most of the Poxwalkers. I just have the blue 20 to go. I did want to get the first base coat of Death Guard Green on the marines as my research has me thinking I going to want to put a second coat on them.

I have basically finished the Poxwalkers. I still have to let the basing dry to re-paint around the base rim, but they are done. Honestly, given the lack of time I wanted to put into them, I think they look pretty good. I think they will great at standard table top view distance.

I have managed to get most of the Plague Marines done. I still have two plasmagun marines, champions and Sorcerers which I have also got a good deal of the base coat already on them. I don't know if I will get them all complete tomorrow, but I should get at least 4 of them done. I also want to get a second coat of Death Guard Green on the Terminators and drones so I can start to get some base colors on them.

Finished up all the Plague Marines and finished basing the two models what were already painted with I stated to match the rest of the army. I have also started to put base coats on both the terminators and drones. I thought the drones would take a lot longer, but I made a good portion of progress this morning. I am feeling urges to pause this project and work on something else. If it were a commission I probably would. Instead, I will try to use it as fuel to finish it so I can get back to my stuff.

I have finished all the regular terminators sans the basing. There are bits here and there I can see I missed, but I am already well above the agreed quality. I am in the home stretch of finishing this portion. The owner of them has more he wants me to paint, which I will, but I am going to go back to my stuff once I finish what I have until the stay-at-home order is lifted.

Thanks.

They are turning way better than I thought. This project has pushed back my desire to finish my own Death Guard kill team for quite some time though.

Here is what I have completed so far. The two models in the upper left I just did a little base work, but the rest I have painted. When I finished I will take a better picture of everything. For now, I want to clear my station of completed stuff to keep my motivated to finish the rest as it looks like the light at the end of tunnel is almost there.

And here's what I have left. I think I can finish the pyskers tomorrow. I also wouldn't mind getting a pretty close to finished on some of the drones either.

Finished up all the 32mm based stuff with these last two. Well, I still need to do the basing up they are basically done. Only six more models to go. Unfortunately, they are rather large models. One is Typhus which it going to get a little extra effort. It would be nice to get it all done before next weekend. I don't know if that is going to happen. I am getting a little burned out painting CSM stuff as I have been doing that for some 5 weeks. I am already chomping at the bit to move to painting my Primaris space marines for a while. Hence the Intercessor in the photo.

I am waiting on both the shade and basing technical paint to dry in this photo. I just halved the number of models I have left on this commission with just three to go. Well at least for the first wave. The owner wants me to do the the rest of his collection as well.

The above photo finishes this blog as I am basically done with this portion of the commission. The owner does have more models for me, but I don't know exactly when I am going to get them to work on. I don't know if I will add that to this blog. So I will treat this as the end.

All thing considered, I think the commissioned turned out really well for only spending 4 or so weeks on it. I am straight up envious of the bases on this collection. Not that they are anything special, but I like the Armageddon Dust/Dunes with Flat Earth around the rim far more than my Astrogranite and Light Gray rim on my own 40k collection. At the same time, I have way too many models with that base scheme to want to do much to change it now.

The Death Guard commission part 2. This time it's personal...

Because I am also finally going to finish painting up my Death Guard kill team as well. Honestly, when I was talking with the owner I had the impression they have bought a bunch more stuff. Everything primed save the 5 plague marines off to the side were built by me back when the owner just wanted me to build some models for him. Talking to him it sounded like he had read through his codex, put together a list of what he wanted and bought the models for that list. I was fully expecting some Rhinos and/or Plague Burstcrawlers when I gave him the models I had finished and collected the additional ones he wanted painted.

Just to note for anyone skimming through this thread. The brown bases are the commission. The gray bases are my models.

Automatically Appended Next Post:

After a few hours of painting today I made pretty good progress today. I get an hour or two more painting in, and I might have all the Poxwalkers done.
