...such as the AOS General Discussion thread. It was started back when AoS was limited to a single forum, but now that there's a whole AoS General Discussion forum, what's the point of keeping the discussion all in one thread? It's hard to find a particular discussion in the thread as they tend got get mixed in with the other discussions, or one discussion dominates and the others complain they want to discuss something else and it's hardly friendly for new players wading through a sixty-plus page thread looking for something. It had been idle for about a month but it's been brought back with a new post that really could have been it's own thread. Is there any way we can lock it and let each discussion move to it's own separate thread?

Hmmm, I tend to agree, but much of the activity in that section seems to be concentrated there. What if new threads don't happen? Very open to it, just not sure...

The new threads don't happen because it's all been crammed in the General Discussion thread. It's a Catch-22.

Okay, why don't we give it a shot? If it doesn't work after several weeks, we can just re-open the thread.

If you're an AoS regular, get in there and make some threads!

I'm also going to link here in case anyone else has feedback, so if you do, feel free to post up here! Thanks everyone

I don't know, I like the idea of a catch-all place to talk about various things since not everything deserves a topic of its own. Having a General thread also prevents the inevitable tHiS iS oFf tOpIc kind of crap if you branch out a discussion that may only be partially relevant but, again, isn't worthy of a full topic.

I don't see the harm of it. I liked having a thread where you can basically just put whatever is on your mind about the game without trying to shoehorn it into an existing topic or starting one of your own when it's not really to discuss, just musings. Forums these days lack that, so there's no real place to just have musings on a topic.

Why would something be worthy of being discussed but not in it's own dedicated thread? Can you give an example?

Instead you have posts like THIS complaining about the GD thread going back to an old discussion all of the time.

Look at either the 40K General Discussions or the Dakka Discussions forums. There's plenty of threads there just like that, such as Mad Doc Grotsnik's 'I miss Banners' thread which is currently at 72 replies and almost 4,300 views. That's pretty good for a thread that just musing about banners.

If you want to post musings and have no replies, maybe an article would be better than posting it on the forums? You will get replies if you post it in a General Discussion thread so why is that okay and posting it in it's own thread not?

General Discussion threads are not friendly to new players. If someone wants to look to see if a subject has been covered, is it going to be easier for them to find it in it's own (well-titled) thread or by reading an entire sixty-plus page thread?

I find that a single general chat thread often works well because it acts as a subscription attention seeker. Ego those who are passing through have one thread to check - the AoS general chat - for a quick update on the latest releases and developments.

This is quick to check when you just log in and check subscriptions rather than checking new posts or the section itself. And in my experience a lot of regular forum users are more likely to check those kind of sources than the actual subsection itself.

I'd also say that its perhaps a really bad time to test this since with the GW shutdown chances are the thread wouldn't have seen much active news/worth posting since, well, nothing's going to be released until mid-April at the earliest (assuming GW stats up on the 14th and then takes a week to get back into the swing of it - which is REALLY optimistic on both counts)

Isn't that what the News & Rumours thread is for?

The two probably get mixed up.

One downside to general chat in AoS that I can see and should point out is that it does tend to end up falling down the "balance" discussion ALL too often. Which often ends up quite a repetitive discussion focusing on the same aspects it often does.

Lumineth Realmlords are going to be a big release for AoS and has been teased since January, yet a search for 'Lumineth' in the AoS General Discussion forum only shows a single result in the General Discussion thread, whereas the same search for 'Lumineth' in News & Rumors gives me 47 results in the AoS News & Rumors thread on just one page of results (I didn't bother checking the other NINE PAGES of results). The General Discussion thread is not a good place to find news it seems...

I like the change.

One combined thread means you dont really feel like you can comment on anything being discussed except the last few posts, at least to me.

Having it all in separate threads leads to better discussion of all the individual topics. And I dont think people should worry too much about something being worthy of it's own thread - just make it, and when people finish discussing it it will drop to the bottom of the forum.
