You can play by post like old-fashioned times. It might be a little hard with 40k, but it's possible. Take a photo of your boardstate, mail it and your orders to your opponent and declare like the ones digit of various stocks to be your roll, and then wait a week for your opponent to mail it back to you! Otherwise, I think you're stuck with video games or a simulator.

I would go with Tabletop Simulator before trying. If not Tabletop Simulator, try to come up with some sort of grid based way to play to make positioning easier between each player.

Ultimately, I probably pick a game better suited for remote playing like any Hex and Chit game well over trying to work a method to play 40k. Since playing that way practically removes all the reasons I play 40k in the first place.

Damn that's tough. I did it before using Microsoft Paint a long time ago and breaking the board down into a 48"x72" grid. However, using physical models? You'd both need to have identical armies and terrain.

Think I'd have to agree and suggest Tabletop Simulator.

My question would be...why bother? If you're playing remotely, involving a computer etc - why not just play any number of excellent computer games. 40K rules generally suck, the only real appeal being the models, the ease of finding players, and the fluff/lore. I can't see spending any effort to try to play a mediocre game at distance.

Why bother? Computer games don't entertain me the way they once did, so much seems like repeats of things I've seen before. Even the 40k stuff.

Was thinking about something we did in art class, where you put tape on a photo to break it into sections. Do that on a board and you have a way to refer to where your models are. You could use webcams showing the table to allow realtime remote play to occur.

Play by email, assuming you can trust each other’s dice results.

Set up a half board at your location. Opponent sets up another half board at theirs. Photograph the halves _ from the opponents perspective _, and email it to your opponent. Some representation of the opponent (cardboard box, ballon etc) can be entertaining.

Otherwise play as normal, reporting dice results, Strategems with your email, photograph and repeat. Units which move into the opponents board half are represented by proxies.

If you need that GW tabletop feel both Blood Bowl and Warhammer Underworlds Online are faithful recreations of the tabletop that you can play on PC
