Hunting Glade Guard

Hi All, welcome to my painting blog.

I think like a lot of people currently, I find myself with a little bit more time on my hands than usual and I thought that this would be a perfect time to stop lurking on the site and finally get a panting blog kick started and show off some my work.

Currently I am playing quite a large number of games so whilst I am in lock down for the foreseeable future I have decided to get my smaller scale games fully painted and ready to go once we are all allowed to go back into the great big outside world.

I have been a hobbyist for more years than I can count starting out way back in the distant dark ages of 40k second edition. I still mainly play 40k however recently I have become quite entranced with Mantic's Kings of War (and most of their other games) I was seeking out something similar to Warhammer Fantasy and Kings of War offers that perfect blend of army balance and strategy and from my first game I was absolutely hooked, building and painting in an orc army in about 2 months to attend my first event for it (of which I didn't get completely trounced!) a month ago.

This thread will include all aspects of my painting a modelling from this point forward, mainly focusing on Mantic's Games however with a small smattering of 40k here and there as I get my current armies finished up and added too.

Current Goals

Currently I am signed up to Kings of War Vanguard (Mantic's amazing skirmish based fantasy game) so I am working on getting my warband for that all painted up and ready to go. For this I have chosen the Forces of the Abyss (basically Chaos Daemons), the models are absolutely amazing and I managed to get a really good deal on the base warband + warband booster set to pretty much give me the whole range of figures available for the faction so my current goal is to get the core warband finished along with some additional support figures that I can swap in and out as I start testing out the factions strengths and weaknesses.

I've attached pictures of my work so far currently we have completed:

Hellequin Blood-masque
The Despoiler
2 Abyssal Guard
1 Flamebearer
1 Lower Abyssal
1 base of Imps
1 Gargoyle

Next up on the painting docket for the warband is:

1 Tormentor
2 Flamebearers
1 Abyssal Guard

This should give me a really nice core of painted figures for the warband and I can then move onto some of the bigger funkier models like the Abyssal Warlock.

The Future

Once this has been completed I want to add a few more figures to my Death Guard Army:

That third Plagueburst Crawler has been sat undercoated for far too long
With Chapter Approved 2020 I think its time to stick together that remaining unit of Pox Walkers and get them painted to bring my total count to 60, at 5pts and piece now they are the perfect chaff and will probably overtake plague marines in my army for the core troops.
If you painting Pox Walkers and having that many, suppose I should get Typhus glued together and painted up as well.

Deadzone Forge Fathers (Squats):

Deadzone is another great Mantic Skirmish Game and I have bought up pretty much the model range for this faction as well so they will be stuck together over the next month or so with the aim of getting this faction up and running as soon as possible.

Marvel Crisis Protocol:

Massive Marvel nerd so of course I bought into this, when I need a break from Grim Dark or high fantasy I plan on smattering in one or two of these every now and then - first up will be Ultron, I still have some leadbelcher spray so it should be an easy paint job!

I think that's all for now so thanks for visiting and I hope you like my work!

I like them so far! I really enjoy the kind of rocky (if that's the word i'm looking for) look you've given them. What i mean is i like the color scheme

realism is a lie

Thanks Amazing Turtles really appreciate your kinds words.

Well another night has gone and I decided to take a break from the Forces of the Abyss and try something a little different. To that end I've finished up Ultron as my first model from the Crisis Protocol Range.

I have to say I'm massively impressed with the sculpts on these models, whilst they are an absolute $%^£ to put together (some of the frames are absolutely baffling) they really do capture the essence of each character. Obviously a character like Ultron is fairly bases being 99% chrome so some the lockdown is over I plan on getting some leaf scatter to dot around on the base just to introduce a little bit more colour into the model.

Work continues of the forces of the Abyss with the Tormentor base coated and ready to be painted up but I am looking at another quick Crisis Protocol paint job I can crank out and will get Iron Man sprayed up and painted over the weekend as well I think.

Hope your all staying safe and here is Ultron in all his maniacal glory.

Well the updates are coming thick and fast with it being the weekend and little else to do (code for avoiding housework / diy at all costs!)

So I recently purchase the neoprene mat for Deadzone so I can have essentially a box of goodies ready to go at any point to play the game however, I was unable to get hold of the urban one (and more of Mantic's terrain crate terrain) and ended up with the desert one. So a moment of inspiration struck last night whilst I was painting so I headed to the garage this morning to put that to the test.

The results are attached, as deadzone uses an 8by8 grid system for gameplay I was keen to restrict my terrain building to this at moment to create a series of scatter terrain pieces that are reusable for each and every game I play, very WIP at the moment as the DAS Clay is still drying but in a couple of hours I was able to knock together:

1 Silo (as we have a dog I expect a few more of these in due course).
2 Sand Dunes
2 Sets of small Ruins
1 Desert Bush area (Woodland Scenics armatures waiting to be glued down)
2 sets of Disused Piping

Adding this to my existing terrain set should give me a really good amount of terrain going forward, now to get some more bases cut for the other stuff.....

Nice work on the abyssals. It's quite refreshing to see something other than the standard red and gold.

Now showing Chaos Centaurs and Tiger Corps from Mars Attacks!

Painting Total as of 5/27/2020: 94 plus two mechs

Painting total as of 12/24/2019: 138 plus a wooden bridge and gnoll encampment and 36 pieces of Mantic scatter terrain and three fly holes and three farm buildings and a fire pit and two hills.

Thanks Josh, I agree that the standard red and gold seemed a little too bland and made some of the models (especially the lower abyssals and abyssal guard look like knock off blood letters so I'm trying to give them their own unique spin.

Well the weekend has come and gone and a flurry of painting & building activity happened.

On the painting front I've completed 2 more Crisis Protocol Models - Black Panther and Iron Man. I found a good painting tutorial online with Iron Man where using contrast over a gold undercoat gives the model a really nice shine, once that was done in a nice smooth coat I went black in and black lined all the joins with some nuln oil (that took longer than I care to admit!). Panther was a much more simple paint job, black undercoat, zenethal prime with Grey Seer then an application of Black Templar and the whole figure is pretty much done. I was going to go back in and do some edge highlighting but I think this more muted subtle highlights works for Panther.

I've also finished my Tormentor for the Abyssals bringing me up to pretty much a full strength warband to use in games, 2 more flamebearers and I would be happy to call the project finished however I have lined up a few additional models to give me some options going forward, when these next 8 are finished I'm happy to call the project done for the foreseeable and take a great from painting purple.

To that end I've lined up my next project - Deadzone. Progress on the terrain I've made continues and that is now primed waiting for it to be painted in stages over next weekend so I thought I would get the strike team built. For this I've chosen Forge Fathers because well, space dwarves. Everything is in the picture below and gives me a nice solid amount of units to play around with and swap in and out during games. I think the only thing I would consider adding now is a couple more of the Iron Ancestors (dreadnought thing at the back) purely on the basis that I love the models. There are a few bits and pieces I am missing from the range but they can be added too over time.

Thanks for having a rifle through my blog and I look forward to your comments!

Well just another quick update today.

Managed to get black widow all finished up and ready, really happy with this one feel like I'm starting to get into the swing of things with the Crisis Protocol range.

I'm still trying to maintain comic accurate costumes for them all and I'm really happy with the results thus far.

Now however it's time to redouble my efforts onto Vangaurd and make a good push to get the warband finished and ready

Well the weekend is here and some good progress was made yesterday and on Friday night.

Another 3 models down for the Forces of the Abyss - I'm getting dangerously close to finishing enough models for this warband to have 2 of each model choice along with all the heroes present and accounted for. This time another flamebearer, lower abyssal and succubus lurker have been added to the ranks 8 more models to go and I'm happy to call this project done (until the whim takes me to finish off the the remaining few additional infantry and cav that I have stashed away.

I've also added a group shot of where I am currently - I am thinking that some sort of display board is required for this lot when they are out at events, something to design at a later stage.

On the terrain front the Deadzone Scatter pieces are finished and ready to go. This gives me some decent LoS blocking terrain that models can weave in and out of but not much in the way of height (this game does require it similar to necromunda), to that end I've resolved to get the remainder of the mantic terrain I own based and painted up to match all of this and then see where I am, I think a couple more Tin Can silos will be useful and some walkways, but that's a job for the Easter weekend.

Right, back to furiously painting Abyssals, hope you are all staying safe.

Hi guys

Hope the Easter Break is treating everyone well.

Well its been a decent little painting weekend for me, really managing to power through on the final few abyssals so now I only have 3 models left before the warband is fully done, I'm still playing around with lists but this gives me pretty much everything available to the faction painted and ready to go.

Completed this weekend we have another Abyssal Guard, 2 Succubus, 2 Lower Abyssals and the third and final flamebearer. Last few things to paint are character models so I'm looking forward to getting cracking with them today.

I've also been steadily plugging away with Crisis Protocol and have painted up another 2 models Red Skull and Venom nice little pallet cleansers from painting all this purple and gold, I'm debating on who to paint up next from this range but I am really enjoying getting the models up and running and ready for a game.

Current plans after this are to take a break from the Kings of War Universe and head back into 40k for a week or so, I have a few straggling units from my Death Guard that finally need a lick of paint to bring me up to something close to fully painted Typhus will be first up then I'll finally stop procrastinating over that 3rd Plagueburst Crawler.

I've also started to keep all the models I paint throughout this isolation period on a shelf on their own so I can see how far I get with everything whilst I am not gaming (group shot attached) finding this is really keeping me motivated seeing everything come together and be ready for battle. Anyway thats enough from me. Onto the pics.

Well the Vanguard Warband is finally completed, this is pretty much the whole range for the Force of the Abyss finished and ready for a game still working out a list but, its nice to have a decent selection of painted models to play with at any given moment. I will go back and add a couple of models to the force (I'm thinking a second Hellion, another gargoyle, the succubus character, 2 more succubus and some hell hounds) but for now I'm happy to call this project completed and move onto the next one.

With that in mind I've been playing around this week with colour tests for my Forge Fathers and have finally arrived at a scheme I like, its a relatively simple scheme but I think the colour choices complement each other well and I will be happy to crank out multiple models in this type of scheme, I'd be interested to hear your thoughts on the scheme.

Still plugging away with Crisis as well, still debating on which model to add to the growing collection of painted figs, I'm thinking either Doc Ock or Killmonger next.

Typhus is also a WIP currently, I chose to use the forgeworld version to represent him as I really dislike the new plastic kit and finding the older metal one at the time I was looking was just far too much than I was willing to pay for one model, hopefully he can get sorted over this weekend as well.

Anyway onto the pics, stay safe and I'm really curious to hear your thoughts on the Forge Father!

Your abyssals look really nice. I still haven't gotten around to the larger resin pieces-- you may have inspired me to pull them out of the Closet of Shame.

Josh - I totally agree you should get them out of the Closet of Shame, the 2 Resin figures have been my favourites to paint for the Abyssals thus far the only one I am having trouble with is the succubus hero its quite fiddly so i've put it on the "I'll get round to it later pile", it also doesn't help she's not fantastic in game.

Youwashock - Thank you for the kind words, I'm stepping up my efforts with Crisis now as I want to get the set finished and off the to do list so I can focus on adding to some larger armies.

Well another flurry of painting yesterday afternoon has yielded in 4 more Forge Fathers being done so I have 100pts (ish) fully painted and ready to go for Deadzone. Just a quick update today but I am looking at getting the Brokkers (a staple of all forge father warbands) painted up and ticked off the list.

Well it's been a while since my last update as I've been adding some more units to my Kings of War Orc Army to try out a couple of new lists. I decided to contrast paint these in order to get the army up and running quickly and allow me to get playing in tournaments as quickly as possible and once this next batch of reinforcements are ready I will show off some pics of the army as a whole.

On the more general painting front I am finding myself jumping between projects lately as a way to keep me from getting bored of slogging through mountains of greenskins. This had gotten me a few more Crisis Models finished, in this case Doc Ock, Crossbones and Killmonger. Still really enjoying painting these even if I did have a lot of difficulty getting Ock's face and yellow right (still not happy with the face and just abandoned the yellow on his costume. Getting these few finished means I have 6 models left of my current collection and I am eyeing up buying the Guardians that have been released soon.

I also dipped my toe back into the 41st mellenium and painted up Typhus to add some reinforcements to my Death Guard, for some reason I really dislike the current Typhus model so grabbed his Horus Heresy version instead I didn't Nurgles rot him up but I think he will slot on well to lead my pox walkers into battle.

Next up I am currently colour testing a unit for my new Kings of War army (Slyvan Kin / Elves) before diving back into my Forge Father warband, those Brokkers have been undercoated for far too long!

Well I must admit I have been a bit lax in updating this blog recently in part due to work but also due to the fact I've been rather productive on the painting front and I wanted to keep the momentum going as much as possible.

So what have I been up to?

Well I now seem to have 3 projects on the go at once at the moment which is never a bad thing, as it means I can jump between things to keep things fresh during these strange times, what I've eventually landed on is:

- Crisis Protocol
- Forge Fathers
- Sylvan Kin

The Sylvan Kin is not a new project, I've had a large majority of GW Wood Elves knocking around since they blew up the world that have been looking for a home, whilst I still have the core of my WFB army sitting and painted I had stripped my 4/5/6 edition wood elf models with the plan to update them into that force. After the great Warhammer Fantasy Tantrum of 2013 that project got shelved and so this rather large wood elf army got relegated to a storage box, thankfully they have now found a home in Pannithor. I've worked out a list that I like after the release of Kings of War's Uncharted Empire supplement and have been trawling eBay for the last few bits and pieces to a make it a full army and have just got started so I can have a second army to bring out once we are all allowed out to play again that list consists of:

3 Hordes of Forest Shamblers(Treekin)
2 Regiments of Hunters of the Wild (Dryads)
2 Troops of Kindred Glade Stalkers (Waywatchers)
1 Elven Prince
1 Forest Warden (Branchwraith)
2 Treeherders (Treemen)

It gives me an incredibly quick force thanks to the majority of this army having scout (think a vanguard move from WFB) and the spell surge allows me to theoretically shove one or two units into the enemy turn 1 which to me really feels like how a wood elf army should play, a fast ambush force that can pick the fight it wants to, in order to disorder the enemy and pick off units 1 by 1. I have no idea if it will work but its going to be good fun finding out, this also gives me a spring board to jump into the main elves roster for KoW which my remaining left over elves which will be a project for later on in the year.

So far I've completed a regiment of Hunters, the Forest Warden and a Treeherder and this weekend I'm going to make a start on my first horde of Forest Shamblers (pics below).

On the other projects front, I've added in an Iron Ancestor for my Forge Fathers, I absolutely love this mech design and plan on buying another couple purely because I like the model - I'm looking at then bulking out my infantry so I have a full force I can field. Crisis continues to be a slow plug as I am trying to spend as much time on each character as possible I'm just finishing up Baron Zemo and Thor which now leaves me with Valkyrie, Spidey, Cap and Captain Marvel to paint. To celebrate this I ordered the first batch of Guardians releases (Star Lord, Rocket and Groot), trying to keep up with their releases is a bit daunting but I figure one or two boxes a month can't hurt, next up I'm planning on bulking out the Avengers side of things with the Hulk and Hawkeye.
