I've previously built a couple of Blood Angel armies, and am aware their Captains and other high ranking or elite individuals will wear golden armour instead of the Chapter colours.

Is this an indulgence peculiar to the sons of Sanguinius, or do other lines of Astartes indulge in similar behaviour?

For example, are there incidences of an Ultramarines higher-up also with a fetish for LARPing as Golden Rod?

Its largely a BA only thing, that started in the way back machine (2nd edition?)

Most marines limit rank to markings, especially on the shoulder pads, extra decorations (wreaths were rank markers at some point), and helmet/backpack redesigns, additions or helmet recolors.

Its oddly non-standardized, partly because early RT stuff had SM lieutenants and other ranks, and then they vanished for multiple editions.

Efficiency is the highest virtue.

I know personally I use a lot more gold on HQs and honor guard/ champions as well. Not to BA levels, but a lot of shoulder trim, full shoulders, and helmets (on the guards)

Helps them stand out on the table.

Off the top of my head I can't think of any established chapters that do it, but there's nothing stopping you from doing it. Personally I also put more gold on my Captains to fancify them.

Marines are basically knights in space, they are highly diversified and free in their heraldry and markings, in a lot of chapters. Primaris tend to nullifies that, but if you want an officer to be all gold or copper or black or whatever, just do it it's totally acceptable. The captain of the first company of my own chapter is actually wearing an all gold terminator armor

The most recent special marking for an ultramarines or codex captain was a black helmet, the same way sergeants have red helmets.

In the Raven Guard, the higher in rank a marine gets the more white trim they can wear, until the point that a high ranking captain can have more than half of his armor painted white. Ofc there are lots of raven guard players who don’t bother with this because of how stealthy they want their models to look, and it’s more of a personal heraldry than an official uniform.

I don't know about officers but Rogal Dorn wore gold armour rather than the yellow of his Legion so there is a precedent.

Raven Guard are known to use very little in the way of ranks or marking on their armor, so it is harder for the enemy to pick of the leaders.

"Because the Wolves kill cleanly, and we do not. They also kill quickly, and we have never done that, either. They fight, they win, and they stalk back to their ships with their tails held high. If they were ever ordered to destroy another Legion, they would do it by hurling warrior against warrior, seeking to grind their enemies down with the admirable delusions of the 'noble savage'. If we were ever ordered to assault another Legion, we would virus bomb their recruitment worlds; slaughter their serfs and slaves; poison their gene-seed repositories and spend the next dozen decades watching them die slow, humiliating deaths. Night after night, raid after raid, we'd overwhelm stragglers from their fleets and bleach their skulls to hang from our armour, until none remained. But that isn't the quick execution the Emperor needs, is it? The Wolves go for the throat. We go for the eyes. Then the tongue. Then the hands. Then the feet. Then we skin the crippled remains, and offer it up as an example to any still bearing witness. The Wolves were warriors before they became soldiers. We were murderers first, last, and always!" —Jago Sevatarion
