I have some leftover marines that I want to paint up as either Alpha legion or night lords, maybe as death guard

Which would you recommend?

From a rules standpoint I'd advise Alpha Legion; the Death Guard have been split off into their own book with largely curtailed options, and the Alpha Legion trait is one of the easiest to make effective use of.

Balanced Game: Noun. A game in which all options and choices are worth using.

It largely depends on what you want out of them. As above, some people say DG have "curtailed options", but that's a little on the reductionist side IMO. They lost some stuff, they gained some stuff, but in the process, they finally play on the table the way they perform in the fluff which is awesome (they're my primary). However, if you're only bringing a few spare marines, you may not get as much benefit from them vs Alpha Legion.

Edit: I just googled ablutions and apparently it does not including dropping a duece. I should have looked it up early sorry for any confusion. - Baldsmug

Wait, what were we talking about again? Did I ever tell you about the time I gave you five bees for a quarter? That's what you'd say in those days, "give me five bees for a quarter", is what you'd say in those days. And you'd go down to the D&D shop, with an onion in your belt, 'cause that was the style of the time. So there I was in the D&D shop..."

for competitive, alpha legion. BUT if youre just looking for fun games but dont want to do poorly against stronger armies, i'd suggest Night lords. Theyre basically the Elves of Chaos space marines with all the tricks they can pull. And they still get access to all the strong CSM units (Disco lord, possesed, oblits, etc).

Death guard sadly has a hard time when played monocodex and the list variety isnt that big (3 plagueburst + 3 bloat-drones is the core).

If you're just gonna paint some marines I would definetly go for the night lords! Their colour scheme is cool. Alfa legion are no slouch though if you paibt scales and the hydra symbol.

Brutal, but kunning!

I think Night Lords have one of the coolest paint schemes of the Chaos legions. They ain't no Black Legion, but they are definitely in my top three of most awesome. Alpha Legion can also look really good, but I think it can take some effort pull it off. Even more effort than the lightning effects of Night Lord armor.

I would use Night Lords. But half my CSMs are Night Lords, so I am biased.

"Because the Wolves kill cleanly, and we do not. They also kill quickly, and we have never done that, either. They fight, they win, and they stalk back to their ships with their tails held high. If they were ever ordered to destroy another Legion, they would do it by hurling warrior against warrior, seeking to grind their enemies down with the admirable delusions of the 'noble savage'. If we were ever ordered to assault another Legion, we would virus bomb their recruitment worlds; slaughter their serfs and slaves; poison their gene-seed repositories and spend the next dozen decades watching them die slow, humiliating deaths. Night after night, raid after raid, we'd overwhelm stragglers from their fleets and bleach their skulls to hang from our armour, until none remained. But that isn't the quick execution the Emperor needs, is it? The Wolves go for the throat. We go for the eyes. Then the tongue. Then the hands. Then the feet. Then we skin the crippled remains, and offer it up as an example to any still bearing witness. The Wolves were warriors before they became soldiers. We were murderers first, last, and always!" —Jago Sevatarion

Rules-wise, Alpha Legion hands down. Night Lords fall apart the moment you are low on CP. Death Guard lost a lot more than they gained with their "codex" and honestly aren't really worth looking at unless you wanna do Daemon Engines and Poxwalkers.

I've had a ton of fun with pure marines as Alpha Legion. Not very competitive, but the sheer amount of shenanigans means it's never a full moment. Pyschic awakening really gave them a ton of fun tricks to mess around with. And you can't go wrong with the paint scheme, so many choices.

That said, night lords seem to have some really cool stuff and have oppurtunities for cool paintschemes too, so you really can't go wrong.

My vote would be alpha legion since you can make generic marines easily fit into the idea that theyre "loyalists" or Infiltrators of some type, but it's not like you can't add some bits to night lords and make them look cool too.

If it's jump pack Marines, then Nightlords of course. If you like modelling and have a lot of Green Stuff, then DG.

Night Lords, mainly because of the colour scheme, and of course ADB.

I'm biased as I've been playing almost exclusively Night Lords since I started back with the 3.5 codex, but in my opinion they have the best color scheme and lore, and Faith and Fury gave them some great stuff. Just remember to roll deep on the cp as strategems seem to be the only way gw knows how to give the legions flavor nowadays.

And yes, ADB'S books are awesome, but don't forget about Simon Spurrier. Lord of the Night was fething awesome as well. (Still hoping for a sequel.....).

They're not underrated, they're actually pretty mediocre with CP and as you start to run low they're back to straight garbage.
