Subject: Dakka Painting Challenge Round 62 April 2020: Pile Of Shame
Welcome all to the 62nd round of the Dakka Painting challenge. For the unfamiliar, this is a friendly painting competition open to members of all skill levels and experience, whether your entry is your first or you thousand-and-first time painting miniatures. Each month, finished entries are collected into a thread where the community can vote on their favourite pieces, and those votes go towards an annual overall League that runs for 12 rounds, ending in February next year.
This month, the theme is looser than usual, the only limit being how big your pile of unpainted plastic/metal/resin is! Since a lot of people can't get out and buy new minis, your challenge this month is to dive headlong into your existing model collection and pick out something to paint. Got a unit you've been meaning to paint forever? A daunting character mini you've never found time for? A massive monster or vehicle in need of assembly? This is the chance to get those long-delayed projects underway! The usual limit of five models is also lifted, so if you want to put a dent in a whole new squad or army, go for it!
How To Enter
- This month, you may enter as many models as you like as a SINGLE ENTRY, and are permitted one entry per member per month. If you enter multiple models, they should ideally be related in some way, such as part of the same squad, unit or scene if you are doing a diorama
- You MUST post a 'proof' picture of your entry in the thread of the state it was in before you started working on it; this must be either unassembled, unpainted, primed or coated a single colour. Entries that do not submit a valid Proof Picture will not be eligible for voting.
- After this, you may post WIP pictures in this thread and your own if you wish, and on completing the entry, you may post up to 6 final pictures IN THIS THREAD that will then be used for voting. Please note that pictures in a montage or collage picture will be considered individual images for this purpose, so while these types of presentation are certainly acceptable, please keep the image limit in mind when compiling them. For example, a collage of 5 images and one separate image would count as your 6 picture allowance.
So What Do I Win?
- Points... and points mean... bragging rights for the next month! Following the vote, points will be awarded to every entrant. This year, the Points you receive will be equal to the Percentage of Votes your entry receives in the final Voting thread; if you get 10%, you get 10 points, if you get 6% you get 6 points, so on and so forth.
These points will be used to form a league table, which will be updated month on month as the results come in.
How Long Do I Have?
This challenge begins 1st of April and will end at midnight UK time on the 30th of April. After this, I shall compile the finished entries into a new thread, and voting will run for 5 days.

Noice noice noice! I was wondering about the lack of poll for this month!
Well, guess I'm gonna get my Dark Imperium Death Guard cleared up afterall. I've already mostly done the Plague Marines and characters but I'll throw in 20 poxwalkers and a foetid drone and see what happens. Pics pending.
I may switcn and paint up my Orks instead.
Paradigm, think its really awesome to lift the restrictions on 5 models given yhe circumstances so thanks for that! Maybe you should change the main text though? The CtrlC/CtrlV parts still say 5 models.
For my entry this month I'll be looking to finish off my Dark Imperium Death Guard and going for these 20 Poxwalkers and a Foetid Bloat Drone!
I'll also be painting up this Ork Horde as part of the same "Grey Tide" entry of all the unpainted hordes I have. But depending on how long lockdown lasts I may not have time to finish the Orks so I may end up having a half entry.

And refuse to love the Spinosaurus because it is a hamfisted attempt at taking what you loved, making it TREX +++ and trying to sell you it.

I think it might take me a month to decide what to paint!
Anyone remember the dark vengeance box set - Dark Angels and Chaos from years ago? I have a Chaos expansion and Dark Angels expansion I bought on ebay couple year ago that haven't been touched! The Dark Angels set still has the plastic around the box!
Also, I have the Blood Angels Spear strikeforce box set, I've only painted a couple of marines from this box
OR
I could paint something from this box
So I have fair amount tochoose from, and to keep me busy during lockdown

In the round 61 thread, Jadenim suggested an (optional) sub challenge that I've taken to heart:
Jadenim wrote: Sub-challenge; find the oldest mini that you’ve never painted?
I present:
Cedric Hammerhand (Chaos Warrior), Gladstone the Large (Chaos Warrior), Zarygor Bloodrage (Chaos Warrior, released as a Chaos Warrior, tab says Marauder) and Lunkop Banesmite (Chaos Marauder, released as a Chaos Thug, tabs says Marauder).
In the strictest reading of the sub challenge, these miniatures have never seen paint. Their tabs are stamped 1985.
Yes, I am going old school with square bases as well.
With the lockdown and all, maybe it's finally time to jump back in and take part. Did so last time almost a year ago.
A great theme by the way. It's going to be a hard choice.
This might be a good time to tone down my pile of "opened and half eaten sprues", which contain for example: 5 1/2 eldar jetbikes, some killa kans, various eldar / dark eldar / AoS elf models and an assortment of random undead stuff:
Or I might paint the orky vehicle right next to the pile.
Or I might finally restart and repaint my Dark Eldar army (If I decide to do that, I will post a better proof picture, as this one is taken a week ago):
As a "day one progress pic" I have one converted Warlock on jetbike made from the pile on the first image.
So it might be a strong contestant.
In any case, I will designate my final proof picture later. I will either do it to this post, or to the one with the final images. Whichever is the best.
Here's my proof pic, much younger models than I am seeing here but I have had them a while and this will complete my fallout brotherhood of steel collection.

I'm torn between seeing how many Blackstone Fortress minis I can paint, and doing the same thing with the Stuffed Fables board game I've been playing recently, which has some lovely minis.

Those five Grundstok Thunderers should qualify for pile of shame. Bought them on release, even painted the leader for AoS Skirmish (that's why he's not so golden, stripped the upper layer color of) and the rest stood primed in a box since then.

Argh, I totally want to go deep into the bits box and find some classics... I'm sitting on old Arbites, some early (2nd? 1st?) guardsmen (the oldest aren't even guard, but "adventurer" and "pirate"). That's a brilliant twist and I salute those of you digging deep.
But no. As a Sororitas player, I know about shame... along with guilt and redemption it's kind of our brand. It would be a shame, after waiting 20 years, to leave these beautiful plastics on the sprue any longer, and a further shame not to hack them up in ways you just can't do with metal. It would be a shame to build more Seraphim when what I really want is Zephyrim, so I'm going to convert the squad of 5 from the army box. If I'm ambitious, I'll add an Imagifier and a bunch of special weapons from both the army box and the BSS/Dominion/Celestian box to fill some gaps in my recent listbuilding. It will be a shame to cut bits off already built and painted models, but my Zephyrim need power swords and stormbolter-Superiors are the stuff of Legends now, so out come the clippers. I'll shoot for somewhere around 10-15 models built and painted this month and I'll feel real shame if don't at least deliver five.
Proof pic: pile o' sprues, inventorying power swords from the bits box, and marking up the assembly guide for the Zephyrim conversions. You can see some sword arms and the Zephyrim pennant taking shape there as well.

It's a dwarf month for me. Dain Ironfoot (because who doesn't want Billy Connolly in miniature form?) and a chaos dwarf daemon Smith. I will endeavour to finish both, but I may only finish one.

My pile of shame has grown a lot since i started buying gw stuff again when they released kill team. I now have 2 kill teams, 1 necromunda gang and 3 warcry warbands. All WIP.
Since there is no model limit this month I will try to paint every model from my Astra Militarum kill team.
Thats 5 Scions, 5 Catachans and 3 Ogryns. Hope I can paint most of them at least!

So after delving into my Mountains Of Shame I managed to excavate some barely started "Space Orks" from the ancient Rogue Trader era plastic kit, a Vyper I bought in '98 and _nearly_ finished but would like to give a quite different colour scheme now, and some unpainted Mordheim Sisters of Sigmar - the Sister to the right was one of the first minis I painted when I got back into the HHHobby a couple of years ago, so I think I'll go with some of these (at least the champion gal with the two hammers) to see if and how I've progressed in the meantime (I'll post new proof pictures with re-primed minis if I decide to go for the Orks or the Vyper).

I’ve got two different models that I’ve been putting off for some time now, but they’re completely unrelated. Unless this breaks the rules, I’m going to submit proof of both and then decide at the end which one I want to be my actual entry. If that’s unacceptable, please let me know!
I’ll be working on St. Celestine (and potentially her geminae, we’ll see...) and Ras Nsi, the undead Yuan Ti from DnD’s Forgotten Realms.

I dusted off the assault sqaud, picked a squad leader out of the other nine and cant believe how I have attached them to the bases, half of them are looking downward and firing down.
I suppose i could pretend they've jumped out of a thunderhawk, looking online ate the 3rd edition assault marine box (multipart plastic) they look down too, will start to add colour tomorrow.
I've never done one of these before, thought I'd give it a go. I'm a pretty slow painter, though, so no promises on getting through stuff. I've got a pile of Craftworld, Corsair and Exodite character conversions that need painting up. Here's my proof pic, I'll perhaps get one, some, all, or quite possibly none done before the month is out!

So another delve into the room of shame had me almost distracted by various bits and pieces - parts of squat bikes, the original egg-walker sentinel, the limited edition Power Armour trooper, the original Space marines (with the axe bayonet lasguns and funky boots), the Skullz Iwo Jima homage.... But I resisted all in my search for the jezzail wielding champion.
Unfortunately I was still unable to find one - although the room taunted me with a jezzail and arm that I removed from one many moons ago.
As I had already pretty much set my heart on doing the pair I decided to strip the version I had found (in these strange times reverting to hand sanitizer and brush cleaner to do so).
Long story short, here's my proof pic:
Needs another pass at cleaning, and maybe some slight reposing.
