Due to a tremendous increase in workload irl I did not find the time to properly continue my 40k army in the last months and put it on a hiatus. Time to do maybe one model per month is not quite enough for 40k, where the rules change faster that I can finish the layout of a few squads. Unable to completely let the hobby rest until life gets more easy going again I made some bases for smaller, less time consuming games (sometimes doing Killteam, Infinity, Starship Troopers in the past) and then made a test model for some kind of killteam/warband, whatever... and it was fun.

The bases are made of air drying putty with press moulds of surfaces of various toys/plastic packages.

AT-gunner. The gun is modified from Dreamforge Valkir support troopers, the body and head are modified from a model a friend gave me (made on heroforge and had it 3D-printed).

Have some more of this body in various poses, a multitude of punky heads and some futuristic guns. Have no idea where this is going, but maybe a 10 model alien hunting squad. Might use Astartes rules for Killteam

CC and advice always welcome!

Cheers, Max

Or maybe you just can't be bothered to paint a large project like most people I have my computer desk and my hobby desk both in the same corner so at any given moment I can just turn my chair and paint for like 3 minutes when I feel like it, or I'll just base coat or put some stuff together while I'm watiching videos and stuff, it's almost like I don't have to find the time because I can multi-task. If I had to like sit down and dedicate time to painting I would go crazy. I'm not sure if that's what you do but if I were you I would just keep ur painting stuff in arms reach whenever you're doing stuff and just do little bursts.
Those bases are awesome. Modelling putty and press mould from random bits you say.. I must try this the results look superb,

Thanks, Axel!

My hobby room is next to my office, so sometimes I have painted as you described. Worked quite well in the last year, especially with the wet palette, and got me bout 50 models done.

However, recently work became so stressful, it did not work out anymore. Also, for the two part epoxy stuff I do a lot with (for conversions of the models such as the head of the AT-gunner, the bases are the cheap stuff), I just need about an hour or two from mixing to smoothing the finished surfaces, which currently is hard to find. You can't take larger breaks there. I could do more if I just painted the models without converting, but the converting is what I like the most. So, right now one model per month is doable, but hardly enough for 40k.

Nice work, but I really want to talk about the bases. You say a few bits making a press mold and some putty? Is there any chance you could elaborate with a small tutorial or at least a list of materials and technique? Really love the look you got there, and the idea of doing so with the same bits I've made my terrain from would really rule.

Keeping the hobby side alive!

I never forget the Dakka unit scale is binary: Units are either OP or Garbage.

Thanks and sure, Edwardmyst, will take some pics when I make the next. For the texture stamps I use oyumaru cut into rectangular shapes, the rivets are simpe pen indentations.

Here's how I made the bases. It's a very simple approach.

(1) Find some interesting surfaces. Toys, plastic packages, speakers, etc. The world is full of them. Boil some oyumaru (or instamold, blue stuff) and press it on the surface.
(2) Cut some rectangular stamps out of the oyumaru. Some materials, where it does not matter if you get a positive or a negative such as the piece of package in the picture I use for the hazard stripes, can be used as a stamp as they are (no oyumaru stamp for this one).
(3) Get some putty and some bases. I use cheap airdrying putty for this. Also works with two part epoxy putties such as green stuff etc., which take detail even better. You have to keep everything well lubricated with the epoxies, though (water or better vaseline).
(4) Take a small blob of putty and flatten it with some roller. I use this package of effervescent tablets. I’ve sharpened the opening with a file so it also serves as a kind of cookie cutter for the putty fitting for 32mm bases (it can also be used to take larger tissue samples). I glue the putty circles onto the bases with pva glue and a drop of superglue. You can also glue them on later.

(5) Get wild with your stamps.
(6) Use office equipment. Remember: If you are in home office right now this counts as working hours. I use a ruler for the border of the tiles and a pen for the bolts/rivets in the corners where the tiles meet.
(7) Let it dry. Does not look too good, but once a little cleanup is done and a base coat and a wash are applied it will get better.

will continue in a few days...

Thank you Max Moray! I have never worked with this type of idea, but I now see clearly how it can be done with just simple stuff. I really appreciate the time to take some pics and explain.

No problem.

(8) Removed excess putty on the edges with a hobby knife and a file. Then I applied a sloppy basecoat with craft store colors (yellow, black and silver with a little black). Of course you can also use a primer and pro colors.
(9) Applied a black wash (lots of water, black craft store paint, drop of dish washer), a drybrush with dark gold/bronze and dark silver and some thinned blotches of dark grey with blue and bronze. Some orange/brown blotches to the yellow parts.
(10) Added some highlights with silver and lowlights with a thinned black. Cleaned the rim with black. Done.

Not perfect by any means, but some quick industrial bases. Now I need some more models to put unto them.

Broke the AT-gunner model and had to repair her. I took this as a chance for a repaint because I did not like the green anymore. So, I chose grey armor, which I like somewhat better. I think it suits an alien hunter better in various environments such as space ships, stations and such. Painted the armor with some contrast trying to give it some relexion, if you know what I mean. Maybe a bit much contrast. Also changed her eyes. I think given the torsion and tension of the body it makes more sende to look into this direction... if that makes sense.

Also, painted another model with the same amor (body is Heroforge made by a friend and converted by me with an infinity heavy rocket lauchner).

Think someone with a less oversized gun should be added next. Ideas, suggestions and of course CC welcome.

Another Alienhunter. You can tell I was rewatching some classic movies such as Aliens, Predator, Rambo recently.

Might classify as a Catachan for Killteam or a marine for AvP, maybe even mobile infantry for Starshiptroopers or Infinity Ariadna. Think I’ll make some more in this style, building this mini was most fun in quite some time.

Thank you, guys!

Found some unexpected free time this week and made another alienhunter with a daring 'come at me' or 'want a piece of me?' pose and a HMG

Likely more to follow, since this is fun. CC always welcome.

So, uhhh when you gonna open up shop? I need to know so I can save some cash.

Seriously though, these are great models. Love the simple old school olive drab armor coloring and matt black finish weapons. These days models can have so much unnecessary ostentation and outlandish colorings, it can be daunting to paint.

Hehe Thanks.

Yeah, I choose the olive mostly for the old school look and because it fits somewhat ok into a wrecked spacecraft board as well as a wasteland board. The matte black weapons are mostly due to the fact I can't do a proper NMM black, yet, but trying to avoid metallics.

This week I built a female Tyrannosaurus that ain't got time to bleed.

Also testing a printed backdrop for more immersive pics. Guess, I’d enjoy a board like that… some spaceship wreck or a desolate station.

Ooooh I like these a lot. They look like fun miniatures. Not full of unnecessary detail like some of the stuff out that that’s for for. Well done on these chap.

Thanks, xKillGorex! Glad you like them.

Of course they are not cluttered. Someone would have to paint all that stuff.

More industrial bases. This time with elevated structures to allow poses, where one foot is higher... tactial rocks if you wish.

Yeah! Finally got the super limited corona catachan colonel. Got it from a rather dubious source and in its built and painted state it does not look exactly as advertised. Still, yeah, Dillon!

Yeah, maybe she has a little more success than her 1987 counterpart. Btw I like the name Carlita and so you have just officially named her. Thanks!

You’ll never guess what movie I rewatched this week. Mediocre, but gave me some inspiration for this new alienhunter.

Cool but it looks like she had some extra vertebrae and ribs added to her chest. That midriff is a bit long and flexible for a human...
