A fairly silly list, but I wondered how this might do in semi-competitive games. The idea is to rush the drones and contemptors up the board - able to advance and shoot with the spitters and soulburners - backed up by the 3 Daemon Princes looking to get into CC with the biggest crunchiest targets, while Typhus and the poxwalker hordes hold down the back field, sitting on objectives and stagnating.

Probably wouldn't do very well against IH lists with all that anti-tank, but otherwise what do we think?

Maybe try tossing 10 poxwalkers for a noxious blightbringer. That'll speed the list up.

The contemptors are nice, but expensive for what they are. Maybe plagueburst crawlers? And an HQ that gives them a bonus instead?

Thanks for the comments,

Might be worth including the blightbringer (never thought I'd say that!) but you're right - without him the shamblers will never get anywhere.

For the contemptors, I know this version is very expensive - and I know the received wisdom is normally to run them with dual butcher cannons, but I tend to come up against a lot of heavy T8 units - so I thought rather than try to break through the toughness, why not bypass it entirely with mortal wounds?

Not sold on PBCs - too inaccurate and not actually all that durable when faced with a large number of lascannons/venom cannons - so I might as well bring T7 vehicles because it makes no nevermind.

The contemptors have the potential to do more damage - I can make them cheaper by jettisoning the soulburners, or just giving them dual cannons - what guns would you recommend?

Give the contemptors some guns either dual butchers or lascannons. You have no range and will need some

A quick comparison shows that, mortar+entropy cannon+heavy slugger does the same damage to a contemptor that a 2xtwin lascannon does to a PBC...and PBC is cheaper so you can buy something else to be a threat in your army. The difference is small, so its pretty much 50/50 on which is better. BUT when you factor in arch contaminator trait with the PBC mortar he PBC takes out a contemptor on average in 2 rounds vs the 3 rounds that the contemptor needs. So PBC all the way, work in 3.

Not sure what the plan with 20 plaguemarines in a single unit is. The risk with being picked on and morale checks alone makes that a unprofitable venture, plus the unit doesn't do much. Might as well as have 20 poxwalkers. And bring back a demon prince (work in 3)

Also according to battle scribe the deathguard daemon prince is 180pts with wings... not the bargain price of 165 that regular chaos space marines get.

so I would do.
3 DP
1 Typhus
1 Noxious Blight Bringer
3x20 poxwalkers
3xPBC
3xBloat Drones

110pts left over...
could go dreadnought, plagmarine squad, sorcerer, find someway to get a 2nd battallionn for lots of CPs. Cash in a DP for a sorcerer & beat stick and then get 3 x 10 cultists for that 2nd battalion.

If you do stick with the contemptors, make them alpha legion (-1 to be hit legion trait)... get a regular sorcerer and chaos lord. The sorcerer should have warptime... that'll scare people with really fast moving poxwalkers.

I hear what you're saying about the PBCs, and I don't deny the mortars are a handy utility tool, but I find the PBCs don't outperform the contemptors with dual lascannons when facing T8 opponents. Which I regularly do. I'm really not sold on PBCs - and Arch Contaminator only benefits the plague mortar, not the entropy cannons. I've run this before and it always disappoints - can't hit a barn door and when it does hit it often fails to deal sufficient damage. Maybe I'm just not very lucky of late - my last run of games (now standing at 4 losses and 1 draw) have been plagued with below average rolling, and I'm trying to build something to counterbalance that.

The 20 plague marines advance up the board with Cloud of Flies each turn, shielded by the poxwalkers and bloat drones - each turn putting out a fair amount of bolter fire, and when up close they use Blight Bombardment + Biologis Putrefier's enhancement to frag the opposition out. Cloud of Flies should prevent them taking heavy losses earlier on, meaning they can continue to be a pain for my opponent - and it's something they have to deal with, but they have to chew through the rest of the army to reach em. By the time they do, I should be close enough that it won't matter.

The 165 DP is from Codex: Chaos Daemons. Having him in the Outrider means they lose nothing but gain Fleshy Abundance which can help out the drones to keep them spitting for longer. I've already got the useful DG powers so no need for more DG psykers.

With the contemptor dreads I'm trying to leverage the benefits of Inexorable Advance - but I suppose with lascannons it's a moot point since you rarely need to move and shoot them... That's why I originally gave them soulburners, so they could move and advance and fire without penalty - making for a surprisingly rapid threat to advance alongside the bloat drones. I don't want to run AL - I'm trying to make a half-decent DG list.

After a bit of thought and taking on board some very helpful comments, I've modified the list slightly - swapping out the drones with PBCs with spitters to take the mid-field.
