Just scored a cracking deal on eBay for a job lot of classic marines and terminators and I'm planning to go full 1991 on them- goblin green bases, the works! So, a bit of advice needed:

What are the best modern day equivalents for Blood Angel Orange, Red Ink and Goblin green? Not set on GW paints, in fact I prefer Vallejo where possible. Help me out internet, and I promise to post pretty pictures of the results!

If any of you are old enough to remember WD139, this army is going to be a tribute to those guys

If that is the color, then Vallejo's Hot Orange (4.65) or Scale75's Aldebaran Red (3.63) are close (according to PaintRack, the closer to 0 the closer the colors are). Also Wacolours One Coat Red (2.24), AK Interactive's Blood Red (2.81) are "closer" but none are as close (again, according to PaintRack) as Pro Acryl's Bold Pyrrole Red (0.91).

But, haven't not really seen that Coat D'Arms paint myself and not owning most of those myself, I can't tell you definitely.

Oh, sorry, forgot about an ink. If Pyrrole Red is really what we are after, this artist ink is pure PR254, so might be close. As always an actual visual inspection is probably needed to say for sure.

The Coat d'Arms paints are of course the old round pot Citadel range repackaged (Nice thread here - http://forum.oldhammer.org.uk/viewtopic.php?f=30&t=8229) I recently replaced my Blood Angels Red hexpot with the Coat d'Arms Angel Red and the formula seems to have stood the test of time.

Visually speaking, how orange is it? Maybe the best course might be to use the Coat D'Arms and the red ink I linked?

Honestly, I am not sure and PaintRack is never really 100% accurate (and neither are my eyes).

Calling it 'red' is definitely pushing it!!

In that case, I think PaintRack's swatch is off, because it reads to me as quite red. If it is more of an orange, then Vallejo's Hot Orange is probably closer than the number would indicate. I own Scale75's Aldebaren Red and it is red-red to me, not orange at all. I guess the question of what red ink you want is pretty wide open though. If you have an orange-ish base though, I think you want something red-red. So, maybe PR254 is still want you want (a very vibrant red).

The Cote d' Arms paints are your best bet.

Keep in mind that using the red ink will darken the orange into a more red, so I'd try it on a sample first. I used the red ink over blood angels red for my Word Bearers back in 2nd/3rd edition, and they definitely looked more red than blood angels red.

Gotta love the classic look! Post pics when you get started.

I thought that was the aim, to get a red-orange, by using the red ink as a glaze over the more orange basecoat. But, I am readily admitting that my eyesight is poor, so I might be misreading the pictures really.

Thanks guys - Cruentus, will do mate, apparently they're being delivered tomorrow - one more sleep! ;-)

H - no, you are right, the more modern takes are a lot more crimson judging from the Duncan Rhodes video I watched. I just got me a hankering for some 1991 :-)

Will you paint the black border on the shoulder pads per the 2nd ed. Angels of Death codex? It was a nuisance, but that's how the 2nd ed. Blood Angels were painted and I followed suit.

Maybe too late but here's a pic of mephiston red next to coat d'arms angel red. As you can see the angel red is very orange but I think that's how it was back in the day. Side note mine may be a bad pot but it's very thin and the coverage is terrible.

Oh, wow, that is quite orange. In that case, by my visual look, Scale75's Mars Orange looks close (but slightly more red, maybe) and Vallejo's Hot Orange looks very, very similar to me, at least from pictures.

Thanks again guys, I think given that I've never had a bad Vallejo pot and I do like their drippers that that's the way to go :-)

By chance I found this. Perhaps this will be useful. It mentions the colors used are Blood Angels Orange and terracotta.

The coverage is pretty 'terrible' by modern day standards for red/yellows, it's typical of the HMG Citadel range. White undercoat and several thin coats required. No short cuts in old school

Even earlier painting guides start with terracotta paint but this predates the blood angel red period. You're getting deep old school there

Sorry, just been going through the pile, some references! WD119 (Nov 89) blood angel guide, terracotta base, mix in angel red then yellow. Warhammer 40k painting guide (mcvey 1994) blood/angel red base, angel red main, yellow mixed in for highlights.

I'm going with the guide in WD139, as that was my introduction to the whole hobby, and they're definitely more orange than today's.

Ordered some white spray primer - yep, going old school! Might give them a thin prewash of Smokey Ink to make sure I don't miss any bits though

Cooool, looking forward to seeing how you get on! Once the base coat is on the translucent nature of the paints is the secret to those dreamy smooth Mcvey blends of course

I started playing in late 2nd edition, but man this takes me back. That's so freaking cool. I watched Duncan's video on painting 2nd ed Blood Angels recently and for just a moment I really had a huge temptation to start said army...

Oh Canada!

Those are some fine looking Marines! From what I remember, the Blood Angels Red base colour on 'em back in the day was indeed more of an orange, not red. The red came from the red ink applied on top.

Coat D'arms Blood Angel Red is transparent, just like the original. It's an old school paint and needs either undercoating (aka Terracotta method) or many layers glazed over white. Can be pretty shocking for painters who are used to only the modern paints with high opacity.

Loving the classic look!
