I am literally changing armies due to GW's price increases! Am I the only one?

To beat the price increase? Doesn't sound like a cheap option.

With 9th, and changes, around the corner, how will you know what's going to work your way?

I am unsure how I will make it work but paying $50 for 3 infantry models is a no go for me, personally.

I picked up the grognards, Shieldwolf Sisters, etc.. I still plan to support GW’s Sisters of Battle plastics with a purchase or two...some day when I have no other wishlist items that give better value for money to buy first.

What are you switching from/to?

And have you heard of this thing called the secondary market.... EBay etc?. Buy somebodies 2nd hand stuff & give it a better paint job.

That isn't always effective, though. I'm trying to chase down every WFB army for 6th Ed. right now, and auctions for this stuff are sky high. Never mind the fact that you have to wade through stratospheric BINs to find the odd auction, but stupid people keep bidding things up to the point that they paid more than they would for stuff that was actively available from GW directly. I recently tried to get some Dwarf Warriors with Great Weapons to turn into Hammerers because $100 for a 20 man regiment is FAR too much. They wound up going for almost $70 for a 20 man regiment of Dwarfs. A 16 man regiment was available directly through GW for $35 up until recently.

For 4-6th WFB, 2-5th 40k, and similar timeframe gaming

Looking for dice from the new AOS boxed set and Dark Imperium on the cheap. Let me know if you can help.

Its AoS, it doesn't have to make sense.

Always? No.
Almost always? Yes it is. Though, yes, you might have to spend a bit more time vs just buying new from GW. And EBay isn't the sum total of the secondary market.

As for the dwarves & what they're going for now vs recently on GW & people bidding higher than Gws last price?
So what if GW last sold them 16 @ $35? They aren't selling them that way NOW. And now is what counts.
I'm sure who ever won that near $70 auction would dearly love to fire up the time machine, go back a few months & save 50%. Or splurge & get 36 dwarves for the $ they just spent instead of merely 20. Unfortunately they apparently don't have a time machine. So they had to settle for saving $30 off current retail.

Pricing adjusted what I built when I got back into 40k with 8th. I saw the awesome stuff people were doing with Dark Imperium and the Age of Sigmar starter. As well as the versus boxes and start collecting and the battleforce bundles (and I guess some of the apocalypse formation boxes) and I just almost immediately stopped buying individual kits except 2nd hand. I sold my mechanicus and got into stormcast and nurgle. Later on I started just using historical ww1 infantry combined with resin and ebay plastic bits for guardsmen.

There is so much to choose from at a great price if you limit yourself to start collectings, splitting starters and versus boxes, seasonal battleforce boxes and the like and then supplement that with 2nd hand for anything else. And then if you are willing to dip into other suppliers, things expand even further.

But this is rarely compatible with building a tuned tournament army. I'm sure it can be, but not having to worry at all about effectiveness on the table top means so many more units are viable for me in terms of just painting and playing fun games with my friends.

If playing casually or with friends at a local group, then consider stand-in kitbashed models.

For example, I'd like a Death Jester for a Harlequin Patrol, and also complete a Kabalite Kill Team. I happen to have a Harlequin and skull mask left over from Starweaver and Troupe kits and so can use a Kabalite Dark lance to make a stand-in Death Jester. Bit of imagination with the basing and I only need to purchase a Kabalite kit and save £17.50 on the DJ...

Damn, those Howling Banshees are expensive! No problem. For £22.50 one can take half a box of Drukhari Wyches, with female torsos, and then its a case of shurkien pistols, elf swords and suitable heads. Bingo, feral-looking banshees and the remaining 5 wyches could be a small 40K Wych unit or Kill Team.

Finally, three Tyranid warriors are reasonable at £32.50 but theres enough pieces left over for the upper body of a Tyranid-Prime, and still a good selection of weapons for it. With a piece of wire and some putty( greenstuff, milliput ), one can sculpt a snake body to create a unique "Medusa" Tyranid-Prime.

As the great Neil Buchanan might say..."try it yourself!"

Casual gaming, mostly solo-coop these days.
