Been trying out some schemes for some Scourge from Dropfleet Commander. I'm inspired by Moya from Farscape as the inspiration for the scheme as a base, though I'm also open to adapting it to look a touch different as well.

Spoiler:

Painting Formula:

1) Undercoat Wraithbone Spray

2) Base with Leadbelcher over entire surface - watered lightly. Aiming for as smooth a layer as possible on all areas, esp the smoother areas.

3) Left) First layer Gore-Grunter Fur over lower half of ship (upper is Snaekbite).

3 Right) First layer Contrast Snakebite Leather over all brown areas. Aiming to smooth any oddities over blank areas.

4) Rakarth Flesh on the tips of the fins.

5) Contrast Shyish Purple on the purple regions

6) Jokaero Orange on the strips in the purple areas. This needs to be painted on cleaner and better than I've managed.

7) Wash entire model with Druchii Violet. Might have overdone it on the second (right) example compared to the first. Esp when on the clear areas, focus on leaving them more blank and focusing on the ridged areas with the wash.

Thoughts:

1) Paint needs to be neater, perhaps thinner wash layer.

2) The darker example with Gore-grunta fur looks good but is very dark and I think starts to obscure the subtle details a bit too much.

3) Engine areas I've considered leaving bare silver metal and then washing with Druchie. These would be the rear engines on cruisers and other ships. The purple would be more forward areas of recession like the "grills" on cruisers and the recesses on the front of frigates.

4) Still not sure about the best colour for engine "shine".

5) Not sure if I need to concern myself with adding colour to the ridegs and bolts on the body of the ship or if the contrast paint is doing enough of a good job that I won't improve on easily.

6) Also have to do the red dots for the lenses and guns.

I did wonder if the undersides could be done with Goregrunta and the "inside" of wings on things like frigates and cruisers. However whilst the darker colour works in theory on the underside in terms of only hiding already more hidden detail; its abnormal on "natural" creatures that tend to work the other way around - having the darker colouration on top and the brighter underneath. This is more me thinking about how to make bigger ships more "interesting" if they need it.

I've also considered using this for the engine areas on ships instead of bare silver.

Any advice or tips would be most welcome, painting is still a new area for me and I'm sure I'm making a lot of small mistakes that aren't doing me any favours.

Aye though I'm not sure if colour-shift is the effect I'm after. I'm more after a solid colouration rather than one that shifts around. I do agree that they can look fantastic with that paint and it works really well with them as a style.

Addition - did the reverse of one of the panels.
This time I've done the tips differently, adding Xereus Purple and then the Druchie wash and then a top layer of Genestealer Purple. I feel this makes them stand out a bit more whilst blending with the themes on the model already developed. Though I worry that anything but the brightest light and the colour difference is too subtle. I wonder if the Druchi wash is being a bit heavy/much over the body and whilst it gives shading, if it isn't washing out the difference in contrast over the model.

Thanks moth!

I've been experimenting more - no photo this time but giving them a coat of brighter silver after the base coat and before the Skeleton Contrast makes a huge difference - it makes the panels far brighter and far better in my view.

I'm still not sure about the purple wash. I adds an alien purple hint to things which is good, but at the same time I get the feeling that it "muddies" things a bit by muting some of the contrast variation.

My next experiment is to give the ridges a drybrushing of rackarth flesh after adding the silver, but before the contrast wash. My hope is to get some of that "skeleton bone" colour on the ridges whilst the main body of silver takes on that browner hue. I hope it will help pick out the detailing on the ridges whilst also being quick and easy to do compared to picking them out after with a white paint.
