All,

I was looking over the KoW Ogres army and, while I don’t really care for Mantic’s (or GW’s for that matter!) Ogre models, I do kinda have a fond spot in my heart for Privateer Press’ Trollkin. I know the PP models are on 40mm round bases, but does any one have an idea of how well they might scale against Mantic’s Ogres? I’m assuming they’re well smaller than GW’s, but that’s probably to be expected considering how much GW is undergoing scale creep these days.

Anyway, just curious how Trollkin (not the light warbeasts, but the models like Fennblades, Scouts, etc...) would look size-wise compared to Mantic’s Ogres..

PIx, if anyone has any side-by-side comparisons, would be idea. I just can’t seem to find any through my Google-fu. .

Thanks in advance.

Valete,

I believe many of the older Trollkin minis would be a hair too small in comparison.

One of my regular Warmachine opponents plays Trollbloods, and the Fennblades aren't much bigger than your average Warmachine scaled human.

The Northkin Raiders seem to be larger than the older models, but you might have better luck using the Trollkin light warbeasts as ogres.

Thanks. That’s kind of what I figured, but a guy can hope right? Making a KoW army, even with a low model-count list like the Ogres would probably be prohibitively expensive using Light Warbeasts. Plus I do rather like some of the Trollkin Infantry like the Fennblades..

Ah well, another beautiful idea slain by an ugly fact...

In my opinion, you'll be fine using Trollkin infantry as Ogres. So what if the army is a touch shorter, the game is pleasantly abstract (as the best mini games are) so everybody knows what your unit height is anyway, and because your entire army will be shorter if it's all from the Trollkin line, the relative scale will be totally fine. I would recommend using full model count tho, otherwise the bases themselves may be a bit sparse. With FMC they'll look fine, and IMO better than the various 4 model MMC large infantry hordes out there

Also here's a shot of a Trollkin shooter horde my brother recently finished up:

Since he split the 6-troll unit between 2 hordes, he made the difference up with thumpers and crew. Seems legit.

And if you didn't know it, Privateer Press' store has been doing 25% + Free Shipping over $49 since Quarantine started, which is basically the best price you can get new PP at these days. In case you're looking for a newer sculpt or don't have a massive stockpile of your own.

Thanks. Yeah... I was tracking the sale at Privateer, although that wasn’t the driving force behind the idea. I was just looking at the Ogre list and wondering since I did kind of like the Trollkin models.

And no massive stockpile of Trollkin. Have plenty of other piles ‘o shame that I should probably get to before I jump into a new army.

And, yeah, I’m a full-on believer in FMC (maybe less a model or two to get guys to rank up on 20mm-sized bases). In fact (Insert shameless plug) that came up between JoshInJapan and I in my painting ‘Blog..

You have to skip past the first few posts on my Nighhaunts, and I get into painting up my Ratkin (née Skaven) army, including my take on The Tangle...

I'm not really expert on this game, and i also think mostly depend on whoever are you playing with

besides, the fact that there are no "true line of sight" and that everything is based upon game stats and movement tray dimension, i guess you can go really easy as long as is a nice effect and you like it

i'm using several miniatures from GW and KoW both, i'm using gryph-hounds for earth elementals, beast of chaos as scorchwings and melusai as naiad wyrmriders. My friend is using gnolls from bones (Reaper) as ogre and also a beholder (!!) as a mage/shaman/whatever

It's important you and your friend all agree and the final effect is nice and cool to see. If you feel more confortable, build an higher base, ie lies some of your models on top of crates, rocks or similar, or a very deep cut polystyrene/wooden movement tray. And i guess nobody will complain!

Plastic trollkin are noticably larger than the old metal casts.
