Looking for something to play with my girlfriend. New and old game suggestion appreciated. Some criteria to the recommendations:

*No first person games. My girlfriend gets nauseous when she tries to play in first person.

*She's not really into difficult games and prefers to play on the easiest possible settings.

*So far what she's tried and enjoyed the most has been don't starve. So I guess survival games are a good bet.

*She's very competitive.

*Doesn't actually need to be multiplayer. We've played and beaten Return of the Obra Dhinn, Papers Please and The Cat Lady together (both sitting infront of the same screen).

So yeah. With that in mind I'd love some suggestions on games we could play together. Thanks in advance.

PC - Playstation - Eggbox - Nintendo?

Which unit(s) are you thinking of as that might wel change the answers. You mention TV, but with all the different outputs now its possible to play PC on TV like that as well these days.

Beat 'em ups are usually good for co-op. There's loads of decent indie titles as well.

While not a co-op, if your girlfriend is very competitive, you could try Puyo Puyo vs. Tetris. My Mrs. is also very competitive, we've had some great games on it. It helps that she's pretty good at Tetris though.

try minion masters on steam. f2p deckbuilding tower defence hybrid.
fast to learn,, quite addicting if you like that sort of stuff, matches lasts 3-5 minutes on avrage, only ranked matchmaker so the better you two get, the better opponents you face.

it has premade 2vs2 option.

Great game to play with a loved one if you no longer want them to be a loved one.

My sister used to play adventure games with me way back in the day. Would your girlfriend like zelda: breath of the wild (i suppose that's only co-op if you switch off) or possibly donkey kong games?

Something tells me the games your gf would enjoy are games i have little to no experience with. I think indie games on steam are your best bet with her.

Don't tell her, but they've got another game centered on moving furniture. Same kind of intentionally janky controls, trying to move heavy stuff in tandem or throw/catch lighter stuff over obstacles.
Its awful.

Does...not...compute...

Anyway, me and my ex-gf, now-wife have played a lot of games on PS3 and 4 together, so I have plenty of advice!

When it comes to actual co-op there's this absolute revelation of a game, which is Divinity. We played Divinity 2 split-screen and (having been both tabletop and video game player for almost 40 years) I found it an amazingly refreshing experience. I really didn't expect that a complex RPG with choices, dialogues and turn-based combat can work as a split-screen co-op and yet it does and is absolutely amazing!!! Playing together feels like a real RPG session when we can do things as a team or go our separate ways and explore the world.

If I was to recommend just a single game for couples' co-op it would be Divinity 2.

In addition I recommend those two-player titles, all of them finished, all of them enjoyed by both of us:
A Way Out
Sky Force
Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris/Guardian of Light
Towerfall Ascension
Shovel Knight
Overcooked 1-2

Also we very often play single player games together, and I think cinematic games with gripping narrative are best for that, as they are great for watching, not just playing. We loved

Uncharted 2-3-4 (1 as well but it's visibly weaker)
The Last of Us 1-2 (are in the process of playing Part 2, 17 hours into the game and loving it!)
God of War (actually started on PS3 with 1 and 2, played all of them and enjoyed all of them. I'd say 2 is our favourite)
Horizon Zero Dawn - not a great fan, but have to admit, a solid game and my wife loved it
New Tomb Raider games, wife has been a fan since childhood and 1st part.
Until Dawn was also a fun experience to share.

And then there's Witcher 3, which I played 5 years ago alone and now we are close to finishing the GOTY edition (finished the main plot and first DLC, stopped to play TLOU2, will go back after that) We spent ~150 hours with the game so far and never got bored. Note, though, that we have the literary background of the story, having read the books (me ~25 years ago as a teen ) which helps.

And the final option that is always there and will never go out of fashion - hot-sitting Heroes of Might nad Magic 3

Would also recommend Divinity. 80 hours in with a friend, and loved every second! To clarify though, did you mean Divinity 2 or Divinity Original Sin 2? Divinity 2 is a Dragon Age-like game that’s most likely single-player. Original Sin 2 is more like a D&D campaign that does support co-op.

How about Stardew Valley? It has multiplayer now, although I don't know how much the secondary players get out of it compared to the primary player.

I meant Divinity Original Sin 2, wasn't aware there's another game of that name.

Oh, it is exactly the same for the "secondary" player, it's actually super nice. You just have a smaller house, but only on the outside - on the inside it's identical.

Yeah, echoing people earlier in the thread:

Divinity 2 - Isometric, turn based DnD style RPG game with perfect 2-player integration. It basically just lets you both play the protag in an RPG at the same time, it is very cool to walk into a town, start a mystery and decide to split up and go search for clues in two different areas. The only thing that personally irritated myself and my partner about it is it's got a very sort of goofy sense of humor to it that, along with the voice acting really grated after a little while. I really hope Baldur's Gate 3 is just a touch more serious and has the exact same 2-player mechanic to it - that'll be ideal.

Stardew Valley - not mechanically intensive, fun to play competitively against each other to see who can create a better farm.

Civilization - The ol' classic turn based Start With a Caveman, Get To The Moon game.

"Got you, Yugi! Your Rubric Marines can't fall back because I have declared the tertiary kaptaris ka'tah stance two, after the secondary dacatarai ka'tah last turn!"

"So you think, Kaiba! I declared my Thousand Sons the cult of Duplicity, which means all my psykers have access to the Sorcerous Facade power! Furthermore I will spend 8 Cabal Points to invoke Cabbalistic Focus, causing the rubrics to appear behind your custodes! The Vengeance for the Wronged and Sorcerous Fullisade stratagems along with the Malefic Maelstrom infernal pact evoked earlier in the command phase allows me to double their firepower, letting me wound on 2s and 3s!"

"you think it is you who has gotten me, yugi, but it is I who have gotten you! I declare the ever-vigilant stratagem to attack your rubrics with my custodes' ranged weapons, which with the new codex are now DAMAGE 2!!"

"...which leads you straight into my trap, Kaiba, you see I now declare the stratagem Implacable Automata, reducing all damage from your attacks by 1 and triggering my All is Dust special rule!"

Thanks for this list - I had already marked A Way Out as looking like a really good co-op game.

Is Lara Craft a co-op game then too?
Also Shovel Knight? (How does that work?)

Both those Lara Croft games have the option of solo play but are much better in couch co-op as levels require both players to combine their special skills to pass thorugh obstacles. Some of those co-op environmental puzzles are quite excellent and very satisfying when you find a solution! Actually one of our favourites!

Co-op in Shovel Knight is simpler, there's no such interaction between players beating a level together. I would recommend Towerfall Ascension first, because its dedicated co-op mode is much more interesting.

Thanks everyone for your suggestions. I ended up making a list of all the games mentioned here. Then I showed it to my girlfriend on the tv and she gave them a 1-10 rating based on the trailer and genre. Stardew valley was hands down the winner so now we've installed it but have yet to play it. I was a sucker for harvest moon ages ago so it looks right up my alley. Will undoubtedly get more of the games mentioned here in the future. Very much appreciate all the responses

You won't be disappointed with Stardew, it's a great game (possibly too good, really sucks you in!)

Can second this one. . . I occasionally play this game on my playstation with my kids. Its funny because for them, some of the mechanics are difficult and thus some of the levels/missions are hard. . . But as an adult, I find the game to be pretty easy overall.

Another nice thing is a plethora of choice. . . To date, I've seen Marvel, DC, Potterverse, Jurassic-verse, and Star Wars universe versions of the Lego game, so if there's another series that y'all enjoy, there's likely to be a Lego game version of it for ya.

Another one to suggest is Resident Evil 5, has a great co-op mode.

My partner and I have got most of the way through the game on easy mode - it's not too difficult, other than a few of the bosses and QTE event bits (lots of "I couldn't find X!" shouts through those bits, as your character falls to their death). It's also quite amusing for when you are bring ravaged by zombie dogs and about to die, look over to her screen and she is gathering herbs from a box some way away...

Here I'll give you a list of secrets as to how to get overpowered items and win the game

1) Obtain the mayor's lucky shorts and tailor them with a gold bar

2) Use the mayor's shorts on a sign, or preferably at least 100 signs

3) on the 28th of any month, at exactly noon, shake the bush directly north of the rock climbing wall at the playground

4) place a super cucumber into the brown box in the fenced in area north of the blacksmith

5) place a duck mayonnaise in the metal box in the back room of the stardrop saloon

6) place a strange bun in the chest in Vincent's room

If you obtain all the secret items above you can summon exodia and use him to find mew underneath the truck by the jojamart.
