Hey Guys,

Looking to pick up some AoS, never played before but used to tabletop games, me and my mates don't follow metas but do prefer tournament style play..

Just wondering what to pick up.. in the sense of an essential, nice to have and not needed type thing...

Obviously Battletome (i am looking at Nighhaunt)

But what about...
Core rule book? seems a no brainer on one level but when I read the description there is a lot of content fluff, narrative stuff I don't care for. Is there a refined version with stuff more specific to matched/tournament play?
Generals Handbook, does this replace the core rules? excluding fluff, does this have everything from the core rulebook?
Malign Sorcery, looks to have all the spells and stuff and some nice minis representing them to boot.. are tournaments using the content form this?
Forbidden Power -seems to have extra content, is this currently used in most tournament play?
Spell cards
Tokens
Anything else?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks

Rob

I don't have core rulebook and I'm fine. I have https://www.games-workshop.com/en-FI/Age-Of-Sigmar-Gaming-Book-EN-2019 <- this one and general's handbook(next saturday new one comes to preorder though so wait for that)

Those 2 have somewhat different contents but as far as I know contains all the core rulebook stuff plus more(GHB in particular has point costs. Ones in battle tomes not up to date always).

Malign sorcery: Can be bought. Usability varies by tournament. Endless spells commonly used but depends on you which spells if any you use.

Forbidden power has at least more endless spell. Not sure if you want it if you don't want those spells.

Cards not that needed, tokens can be useful but not needed.

ATM I'm at the 2 books, battletome and models. Malign sorcery next in particular to get 10,20 and 30 pts endless spells to fill army as I run annoyingly often around that much short.

I think atm nighthaunt is a tad on the weaker side of things their books quite old at this point, but I'm sure they'll get an update at some point.

Nighthaunt was my first AOS army, just as a disclaimer, they are among the weakest armies of the game right now.

Just keep that in mind.

Right now I'd second the recommendation for the Game book linked above

It basically has all the core rules and most of the Maligan Sorcery updates as well as some Generals Hand book content from earlier books. It's a good one-stop rule reference book for games and more practical to play with than the big rule book.

Ontop of that:
1) Malign Sorcery - whilst the rules are in the game book, the set contains a big chunk of the universal endless spells that any army (with a wizard) can use in their force.

2) Forbidden Powers - like MS this is a set of universal spells, though also one terrain feature (again universal). So it holds value outside of just its rules. Note whilst it has less spells they are on the whole big models rather than smaller ones.

After that there's a few extras you can consider:

a) Warscroll Cards - these also come with a set of tokens for the army in question. They are handy as reference material for the game, but are not essential purchases by any means; handy and practical but you can game without them if you don't get them.

b) Generals Handbook. I'd recommend getting the one coming up on sale this weekend (preorder). GW splits the single purchase into two books, one is an update to points and stats, the other is a selection of optional game rules and features. The latter carries over, whilst the former replaces last years GHB. That said all the warscrolls are on the store page on the GW site for each model and the Warscroll builder on the GW website also has the points for units. So you can use them as a free reference source if you don't want the GHB.

c) Core book or Big Rule Book. This is a big weighty book with mostly artwork lore and hobby content. It also has the games core rules, but they take up far less space and overall its more bulky and less suited to practical gaming. It's a fantastic book for the setting, but for practical gaming the rulebook linked earlier is the superior choice.

Forbidden Power includes the rules for Legion of Grief, which is a better way to run Nighthaunt than the allegiance in their own battletome.

I try to view Warhammer as more of a toolbox with examples than fully complete games.

Thanks for all the help guys.

Ok so... I will wait and grab the new GHB.. and I will order a copy of the gaming book.

Malign Sorcery and Forbidden powers i will slowly pick up in time and I will give the big rule book a miss for now.

Are the warscroll cards limited? GW seems to have a habbit of running a lot of things limited print these days which drives me mad..

Sad news on nighthaunt! Think I will suck it up and stick with them anyway, as I like the models, second on the list would be gloomspite but I am definitively a collector so in time I will end up with both.

Warscroll cards are annoyingly always limited - though check ebay and 3rd party stores sometimes you get lucky

Yes, the warscroll cards are limited. They come out once, right when the Battle Tome does, & when they run out that's it. After that it's EBay, Amazon, etc & checking around through various shops.

Cards are sadly limited but the AoS app covers that for free and is constantly updated too.

Nighthaunt are in a weird place right now.

On one hand, chainwrasps are some of the best battleline troops in the game.
However, they don’t have a huge amount to really add to it, so they do struggle.
You will find you are always fairly heavy on hero’s to try and maintain buffs and keep things alive.
This sadly means that between them and your core, you don’t have a lot of wiggle room for fancy things.

Main issues however may lie with what your friends run.
Daughters of khaine, slaanesh and bonereapers are all insanely strong at the moment and tend to roll over most other armies with ease.
If you’re against these armies (even if built lightly) you will notice a big curve in power.
