I'm entering in a friendly league thing soon, with a starting limit of 1000pts (it'll probably go up over time to add more units), and I'm thinking of trying to build up a fun "big ones" army list for... well for fun! But I do also want it to be at least competitive (as in not being wiped off the table every game).

Current thoughts are:

Eldar - An Avatar is tempting, but maybe a Farseer +/ Wraithseer, Wraithblades/Wraithguard, Wraithlords... But wraithlords seem to be very fragile compared to alternatives (as always, especially compared to space marine options), and Wraiths are very expensive. Uncertain.

Chaos - Lord Disco, Helbrutes (or contemptors, or decimators..), defiler, that kind of thing. Some terminators maybe.

Death guard - Daemon Prince, and a smattering of various daemon engines.

Tyranids are an option too - Carnifexes, hive guard, tyrants, exocrines and toxicrenes... but I was tyranids in the last league, and I may fancy a change. (Though I didn't use these units before so it would be somewhat different).

There's a lot of options here, so maybe instead of wanting one recommended, it would also be helpful if people pointed out just what -won't- work at a 1000 point level game. I have concerned with eldar wraiths / avatar at low points, as they are fragile and expensive.

I don't know how decent it will be, but I will field Inquisitor Karamazov with 9 Penitent Engines and 12 Mortifiers.

Would an Imperial Guard armoured company count? Or do they have to be monsters, more than vehicles?

As a premise, I would say it counts, but for this particular event I'm aiming more for 'monsters'. I'm also avoiding the Imperium for the most part. Never been a fan of playing as IG (I like them in fluff and in theory, just not collecting them) and I don't want to be yet another in the wave of space marine players.

I've considered AdMech though. Robots and destroyers might fit the bill.

If I went for a dreads list, it would probably be a chaos one. Lord Disco + Dreads would fit the bill.

For Eldar, it's tricky. Wraithlords should have an invulnerable really. Though the new rules letting them take heavy weapons and still close the distance to punch with their fists does make them a tempting choice. Not sure how to support them though (without taking a tide of bodies in troops). The Avatar is also tempting, if only for the look of the model and the fluff, but again hard to synergise. My secondary thought goes to a 'death star' unit like a seer council, but I'm pretty sure that died a couple editions ago.

If you go with csm don't forget the Kytan Ravager. Now that's a "big one".

How do you feel about the Yncarne in an Aeldari Wraithzilla list?

It is a big easier to synergize with the other monsters. It is faster than the Avatar of Khaine, gives out a bit of FnP, and can revive wraithguard/blades.

Then again a Ynnari Wraithseer can be built to be obscenely durable, as well.

I had actually considered Ynnari, though I suspect I'd be losing out on a lot compared to an Expert Crafters / Wrath of the Dead traits list (all those rerolls are pretty handy on an elites/heavies list).

Ynnari would be great if you could combine Harlequins and Craftworld units in one detachment like you once could, but I believe that's still out of the question too.

But you're right about the Yncarne. What would you put in a 1000pt Ynnzilla list?

With 2,000 points it's possible to take a Supreme Command detachment with Magnus the Red, a Super Heavy Auxillary with Mortarion, and a Chaos Daemons Battalion with a Lord of Change, Keeper of Secrets, Bloodthirster, with three five man blocks of Nurglings as troops to sit on objectives and be obnoxious. Not sure how well it would work but sounds funny.

Fwiw, I've just started doing an all armiger force. They have some options in the moirax and will hopefully scratch that mechwarrior itch. Probably not the most viable though.

You could also consider orks with dreads and gorka/morkanauts.

The old Ork Dred mob list, from IA8, was such a fun thing to fight against. I remember I had an Armoured Company vs Dred Mob game once, was awesome.

Big gribblies and you want to avoid Imperium? How about Chaos Knights? A single Tyrant, Despoiler or Desecrator surrounded by a swarm of War Dogs?

A Tyrant with Harpoon and Conflagration Cannon is scary in CC. Use House Lucaris if you are afraid that a CC Alpha strike will take it out. Alternately, give it a Tzeentchian Pyrothrone, a Warp-Haunted Hull and Unhallowed Inscriptions for more Psychic hijinks. Then, there is the Dual Avenger Despoiler with meltagun and Stormspear Rocket pod with a Helm of Warp-Sight that will only set you back 565 points, which allows you to take 2 War Dogs in a Superheavy Detachment at a thousand points (and nets you the full 6 CPs).

Here the Lanchester square law (applied in WW2) comes in.
If you double the tanks or monsters, the enemy has to four-fold the firepower to bring them down.
