There are a couple of presentations from Flying Frog Games for the online Gencon. The first was last night, the second is tonight so I'll try and update this with any updates on SoB

The big things are revised editions of the first two box games (City of the Ancients and Swamps of Death). These will include resculpts of *everything* as they realise the original sculpts are a bit... rubbish. There is also a new rulebook that contains all of the FAQ updates, revised characters, updated card decks and tokens. There are apparently set specific missions too, rather than both sets having the same adventures. Preorders are up for the revised boxes, with an estimated shipping date of 24th September this year. 2 new promo cards are included with each if you order from Flying Frog directly.

Swaps of Death - revised edition
This new edition of the classic Shadows of Brimstone: Swamps of Death features a full set of all new, re-designed miniatures for all of the Heroes and Enemies. In fewer pieces, and with better proportions and greater detail, these are some of the best Shadows of Brimstone miniatures produced to date!

This set also features a full balance and polish pass on every component of the game. This includes all of the FAQ and corrections since the original release, as well as some revised mechanics, card abilities, Hero Starting Upgrades, Enemy Elite Charts, Town Locations, set icons on the cards, new tokens, and a few brand new cards. The revised and updated Rulebook and Adventure Book are both now unique to this Core Set, and feature painting guides for all of the Heroes and Enemies in the set as well as revised and re-balanced Skill Trees and Upgrade charts for all of the Hero Classes.

For veteran Brimstone players, these revised Core Sets are more than beautiful new miniatures, they are a culmination of polish, balance, and feedback from years of adventures all in one place. For new players, there has never been a better time to saddle up and dive into exploring the rich world and unspeakable horrors of Shadows of Brimstone!

There are no pictures of the revised models yet. We might get that tonight where they say they will talk about upgrade packs for people that already own the v1 sets... we shall see what they mean by upgrade sets. Given that they talk about new sidebag tokens for some of the settlement items as well as other new tokens... I'm not sure if an upgrade pack is going to be that easy.

There are two new card set: Rising Darkness and Forbidden Darkness. Rising deals with western themed ones; Forbidden is more focussed around FoFo. Some of these new Darkness cards can affect the settlements after the adventure, rather than the current adventure. Others will give bonuses to some enemy types, or special events like void hounds appearing to try and steal your sidebag items. Some of these cards can also add ongoing effects to players, such as Dishonoured or Wanted status. Wanted is in some of the other expansions already, Dishonoured is a preview of a new rule from the FoFo settlement expansion.

There are two new Scafford gang, Captain Burns and Ol One Eye. No rules for these, they just replace tokens in the Scafford Gang set.

There are two new resin sets. The first is Explosive barrels, which includes a mission to go into a location, place the barrels and then try and lure hordes of enemy into the barrel explosions. There are some new rules for Insane mode that ups the difficulty level for the adventure. The second is an Ancient Gate which includes a mission to have one map that includes you going to three Otherworlds to collect fragments of crystal to stop the gate exploding. Random surges of power can shift the world cards to one of the others, so you may end up with Targa enemies/events on Cynder. This one sounds fun, but $60 seems a little steep.

At some point I should probably start playing all the SoB/FoFo stuff I already have...

From the chat last night it looks like the upgrade will be split into two parts. The first will be the rule book and cards / tokens, the second part will be the new miniatures. I think it’s likely that unless you just want to upgrade one part it will end up being cheaper to preorder the new boxed games instead especially if you can get at a discount through a FLGS.

I usually support FFP directly and will still pick up the webstore exclusives this sale but can’t face ordering the two revised games directly from them as the postage and tax comes to the same price as the two games. Shame as would have liked those new promo cards!

Revamping the old stuff is a good idea. I've never been interested in the older part of the game due to it's age but maybe, if I ever get the Forbidden Fortress stuff assembled and played it would probably but into the remade sets.

The games great, it just doesn't get the love that it deserve.

Combination Dungeon Crawl/ Weird West. I use a few of the Reaper Pulps in it, as well as Cowboys and Indians from other lines.

This is a Dungeons and Dragons type of game where you have to have a committed group. If you start killing players out of hand, it gets bad quick. And that really is an issue. The heroes start basic, and you have to fight for every little meek portion, new weapon, and advances, all the while fighting the dark meter, which, much the same as the Flying Frog zombie's game, Last night on Earth.

To be honesty, you can take or leave that growing dark meter. It gives you added stress, but when you have a squad of zombies, a mutant creature, and tentacles all show up within two turns it doesn't help to add insult to injury when you get a bad roll on the darkness meter.

Playing this game, there is so much going on, so you pretty much have to run it like a campaign game, and preset your encounters, at least the major ones, because the game gets lethal rather quickly. (I/E this Monday, we have to clear the Stafford Gang, Tuesday, you find a doorway to Spaceship Zone. You spend the next two days there, then head back only to find that you end up in ninja territory.... by Friday, whoever's left make it back to town for the town adventures.)

The deeper you go, the better equipment, but the more dangerous the levels.

I'm hoping that Flying Frog starts giving the game some attention. They could do with a weekly, or monthly podcast,. and some of those sweet ads with the real characters in them..

At Games Workshop, we believe that how you behave does matter. We believe this so strongly that we have written it down in the Games Workshop Book. There is a section in the book where we talk about the values we expect all staff to demonstrate in their working lives. These values are Lawyers, Guns and Money.

I hope they're going to release more of those tentacles from the original set.

Sorry, I didn't get a chance to watch the Friday update over the weekend. Here's a summary culled from the preview session:

The miniatures from both sets have been recut and in some cases resculpted. Most models are now a lot less pieces; some are single piece. The level of detail has gone up a lot since the blobby mess that was the initial release. All of the heroes have been resulpted to have better proportions and more dynamic poses, while mostly becoming one piece models. Some, like the ghosts, have optional arms to make them look a little bit different. The XL monsters now have base toppers on the sprue and there are now 4 different poses for the tentacles, 2 for each base set. The two core sets of miniatures will be made available from their webstore for people wanting to just upgrade the miniatures. When and how much are still unknown, but the intention is as close to retail launch as possible.

Some of the more commonly used Town items have become sidebag tokens (because we needed more tokens!), but they have not created item decks for all the shop items yet; though they did say this is something they are looking at in the background. No release dates.

A lot of the heroes have been updates so that there are no obvious builds; each of the starting options is worth considering.

Some map tiles have been updated to make it clearer where walls allow passage (or not) as some of the tiles were unclear.

Pretty much everything has been touched in the review, with all of the cards now including a set icon so they can be identified easily. A lot of cards have had rule tweaks, others have standardised wording to match that in later sets so it is less confusing. There are also some new cards in there for items and events. The rulebooks have been reviewed and there are unique rulebooks for each set so that you don't get rules hidden away in the Adventure book; this does mean that there will now need to be two rulebooks to refer to in come cases. This consolidation/clarification of the rules has meat that there is more space for set specific missions and painting guides in the Adventure books though.

There will be a printed upgrade pack available on the webstore at some point as close to retail release as possible, but they don't know when or how much. This upgrade will cover both sets in one pack, but will only include things that directly affect the game, not things with wording changes or the set icons. the example given was that if it changes from a +1 to a +2 (or something) then it will be in the upgrade set. If it is just changing flavour text or standardising the way of explaining an effect... it will not be.

Given the uncertainty about when and how much, combined with the insane shipping costs from the US they were recommending just buying the new starters (obviously). Looking at the cost of the plastics from the original sets, it is certainly looking like it'll work out cheaper in the UK to buy everything.

There were a few new things teased, other than releases of a few of the remaining FoFo sets

- New 3D depth track in plastic with a 15-card pack included. Due in October.

- Alt Gender Hero Pack for Swamps of Death with the minis in plastic, cards, rules, etc. Due in October. These are new sculpts

- Alt Gender Hero Pack for City of the Ancients with the minis in plastic, cards, rules, etc. Due in October. These are new sculpts

- Retail releases of Shikarri Nomads and Void Swarms. Due October/November
