Hey all, I wanted to start a side project to help alleviate some of my power-armor painting fatigue from my Brothers Penitent Plog. I've been kicking around the idea of WWI themed imperial guard for a while, but didn't really have the means to afford large numbers of Krieg models. Also I hate working in resin. Along came Wargames Atlantic with their Les Grognards kit, and I was close to being in business, but the straight up adrian helmet didn't fit my ideas as much as the more German Stahlhelm look the death korps has. Then Wargames atlantic came out with their WWI german infantry kit, and I was all set to go. I've knocked out some test schemes but haven't decided which one to go with yet. Also knocked out a tank to fit the army. I want this army to feel a lot different than my space marines, so I went with very grimy and utilized dry-brushing instead of edge highlighting.

Which Infantry scheme do you all llike best? There's not much different except for the shoulder pads, but I can't decide which I think looks better. Or maybe they need a splash of color somewhere?

C and C are welcome.

They’re looking good man. I’ve been been eyeing the Raumjager from Wargames Atlantic for a little while now. Their stuff looks decent and is very favorably priced.
Good choice swapping the helmets. I prefer the greyer shoulder pads. Maybe add a small splash of color on the shoulder pads to mark different squads? Probably not much more than that.

Thanks! I guess I should clarify, as I'm using about as many shades of grey on these guys as a Dakota Johnson movie... Did you like the one where the shoulder pads are the same color as the helmet or the one where they match the greatcoat?

Also, I will warn you about the raumjager: It's a nice kit, but it was their first and it shows. They don't give you enough of the heads of any one style to do a uniform army, and some of the arms can be difficult to pair up with the weapons. That said, it's still a great kit. I have an unuused box that may end up being stormtroopers for this army.

I love wargames atlantic, great choice, I think I saw your first infantry man on their facebook

Thanks! I do like Wargames Atlantic. I'm stoked for their heavy weapons kit to come out. I can't actually take credit for those facebook shots, though. It looks like Pete the Wargamer gave some a very similar treatment to what I did.

I really like the subdued pallet here. As mentioned, keep the splashes of colour for markings.
As far as which style to go for. Why not mix it up a bit. Maybe they have been fighting for quite a while and the uniform replacements have changed over time as one supply line collapses to be replaced by one from a factorum that churns things out in a different shade.

Love the look BC. Subdued by well done basing as well.

I think I prefer the darker shoulder pads, for my $0.02.

Thanks for the feedback everyone!
@vim-the-good: I like that idea. I may use it. My reasoning behind the turretless leman russ was that the factory was damaged so they had to improvise the design.

I decided to try one more scheme for these guys. Based on WW1 stormtrooper camo. I think this may be the winner if I don't go for a mix and match approach.

What do you all think?

Nice start on the Guard army, lovely sculpts you chose for the infantry. My preferred scheme would be the one from the guy standing in front of the tank in your first guard post. The blue-grey works really well.
Excited to see more!

I really like that camo. If it were me, I'd do camo for the vets (they always get the good stuff) maybe with full camo trench coat or cloak, it would look sweet. Keep the dark blue/grey for the rest of the grunts. This way you can have como without going insane painting it all and you have an easy way for you to distinguish between the normal guys and the guys that shoot better.

These look like cool minis! If you’re still trying to decide on colour scheme, I’d go for the grey to match the helmet. I think it fits the more realistic military theme, rarely do you see two different materials on soldiers Uniform/Armour the same colour. I like Vim’s idea on using the camp helmets for vets/stormtroopers

Oh, this is a fun project! I do think that the most recent color scheme is the best, very grim and trenchy.

The tank is neat, puts me in mind of tank hunters from wwii a bit, i think. (hopefully i'm remembering my history right there)

realism is a lie

I like the look overall, but feel they could use a little more spot color, just to make them pop a little as models. Realistic paintjobs and camo is inherently dull; that’s it’s job.

Maybe call back to the old RT imperial Army stripes and markings? You could grime them up a little. but still have some flash.

Nice stuff, I like the helmet matching the shoulders, but the camo version is cool too,

I'd be tempted to take the white/red/white from the tank onto minis (or maybe just the NCOs/Officers) too

Thank you for all the feedback, everyone! I think I've figured out what I want to go with:

I really liked the camo, but I also liked the idea of these being reserved for veterans, so I reworked the original color scheme. The blue-grey that most of you suggested was best kind of clashed with the green grey of the coat, so I switched up the coat color to be a noticeably lighter version of the blue grey. Preserves the feel but without the clash. I tried several markings to get color onto the mini, but the only one I liked was red lenses. What do you all think?

The grey coat works really well brushcommando, as do the red lenses! Great choices

He looks good. I like the colored lens too. If anything, I'd say it could be a tad brighter, just to increase the contrast.

Adapted color scheme looks very cool, love the dirt on the coat. May I only suggest doing the coat buttons in bronze or another dark/dull metal (he asks while only doing buttons on his character models and not his troops himself ).
